Clearly, that some png's that work with alpha suggests that the problem lies with the png's that don 't work.

Some sites describe the characteristics of the files offered for download, some don't. Download and check with Mediainfo or Photoshop. I usually create or acquire the image I want and add transparency in Photoshop if I need it.
