Presets didn't transfer in update build 636

DarkMinds wrote on 5/31/2022, 9:41 AM

I just installed the update "build 636 in Vegas Pro19" and all of our company presets project settings are gone for each client. How do we get them back? This would take hundreds of hours to recreate all of them. Also, all of the window layouts are gone for each computer setup we have. This can't be right?

That sure is annoying. But as a responsible administrator of a server/client architecture, you certainly have at least one backup.
After replays, you can then get in touch with MAGIX.

I have actually written them plenty of times in the past. They can drag a fix out for a month or longer and I've never gotten anything resolved by contacting them. No USA number, no chatbox, and takes 2-4 days for each comment back. Always starts with "do you have the latest updates installed? So, 2-4 days for each response. Expect 10-15 responses... so do the math. lol. Thanks though. :)

DarkMinds wrote on 5/31/2022, 11:18 AM

I've had EVERY version of Vegas. So, to be fair... Sony wasn't any better. They charged $30 a question and almost never solved the issue either. :(

I agree with you. An update always includes a decent migration tool.

Yeah, so it's default everything as if it's a new version. I wonder if Magix knows it costs small companies like us thousands in labor every time they do this. Days of fixing and researching where our settings went. I just spent an hour trying to figure out where Quicktime went. JFC. I really wish they would think before releasing.

If you look at the official announcement, it says:

*Projects saved with build 636 cannot be opened in earlier versions of VEGAS Pro 19.

This is why it had to do a full reset of all settings.

This is why it had to do a full reset of all settings.

That (new projects are not compatible with older builds) actually does not necessarily need to delete user data. There is no equivalence between the two.

The cause of this problem appears to be that the developers desire to transfer user data from the registry to a file called "persist. Prefs", and then delete the registry.

Unfortunately, it seems that they mistakenly thought they had successfully transfered (actually they failed in transfering user data) and proceeded to delete entries of the registry. This resulted in the permanent loss of user data in the registry and "persist. Prefs" also did not successfully store user data from registry.

VEGASDerek wrote on 6/1/2022, 7:55 AM

No data should be deleted from the registry in the process of transferring the data to the new preference file. This was specifically done to ensure you could go back to an older version. The loss of the settings being reported is something we have not reproduced here in-house. Our QA person will attempt to reproduce this problem. We need to determine what the common factor is between those how are seeing the problem and those who are not.

After reading the initial comment about this problem, I copy/pasted my not many Vegas presets before updating to b636; however, after updating, I found that my presets in Color Corrector, Levels, a few Vegas audio presets and saved render presets still appeared as options in b636. But, b636 was like installing a brand new version of Vegas Pro because Options/Preferences settings (all of them) weren't retained at all and had to be reset. Certainly unexpected with an update, but overall for me a minor inconvenience. Also, Options/Customise Timeline Toolbar reverted to default and had to be reset. I imagine that I'll find more given time.

@VEGASDerek

No data should be deleted from the registry in the process of transferring the data to the new preference file.

I originally had about 142 entries in 【HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Sony Creative Software\Vegas Pro\19.0\Metrics\Application】.

After installing the new build, it was down to about 43, so build 636 removed about 100 of my entries from that registry.  Permanently deleted. Can't get it back.

And I guess it will delete more other entries in 【HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Sony Creative Software\Vegas Pro\19.0】.

Steve_Rhoden wrote on 6/1/2022, 9:11 AM

What i do is save all my registry Entries, Presets etc. on my back up drive, after every new Vegas install i re-apply everything..... Doing this is the only way to save you headaches after a new install.

Yikes! What, specifically, can/should I do to avoid this? I just downloaded the update, but want to be sure my render settings don't disappear...

Where are registry entries, presets, etc. stored?

I didn't see any change in render settings- all the custom ones are still there. They aren't starred as favorites but I'm not sure if that's a change with this version or a previous update.

I too had to reconfigure all the toolbars, window layouts, preferences etc. It was ike installing Vegas completely from scratch. FX presets were still there though.

Useful info as these folders are accessible from a disk image without the need to a full restore. Confirmed from Macrium Reflect by mounting a disk image & copying saved folders across.

Thank you.
