Problem with Importing previous projects into Vegas 23

thedanktrain475 wrote on 9/12/2025, 11:11 AM

I've been using Vegas Pro 18 for years but decided to upgrade to 23 when I heard there was stability improvements. Indeed I find it to run noticeably smoother, but I'm having a strange issue I haven't seen anyone else talk about.

When I open my previous projects from VP 18 in VP 23, All the splices on my timeline are offset by just a hair, as if the whole splice has been shifted backwards relative to the media by a few frames. This basically makes my previously existing projects useless because I would have to edit every single splice to line up how it did originally. Does anyone have an answer to this?

I have not see anything like this or anyone reporting this. Are your Quantize settings different in VP 18 and VP 23?

Do you mean the "Quantize to Frames" checkbox? Those are both checked in 18 and 23. Or is there another setting I should look at?

Here's an example of it happening... It's easier to hear the change than to see it. You can't even hear the rapid arpeggio in VP 23 because the media has been shifted out of the splice

Another guess is - maybe an offset issue for audio decoding? Can you share MediaInfo for the main media types in use? https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

You might be onto something... I just realized it's *only* the audio that gets shifted forward. The video frames still line up perfectly with each splice. But it only seems to happen when opening a VP18 project in 23. It looks like the audio behaves normally when importing the same video file to a fresh project.

Here's the media info from one of the affected clips:

@thedanktrain475 Possibility: Vegas had bugs around the start and end points of hevc events, depending on the particular video file, version/build, and also on your selections in the Options -> Preferences -> File I/O tab. If you were depending on those bugs in the past (your VP18), the new version might actually be slipping the video in your events, changing things by just a hair. I.e. possibly "correcting" the decoding bug.

I came across this while discussing hevc decoding in this tldr post back in July '22.

Oops never mind. Was not an audio-only bug.
