I am 46. I have been creating videos since 2009 (the date when my first daughter was born in). My first video software was Pinnacle, next one was Sony Vegas 8 (I am not sure if remember it correctly). I am also a developer and wedding movie operator and editor. For example: I have created an Android app which let me control Vegas Pro rendering progress level on Android smartphone. I created it for fun, because I also love programming. I also created my own plugin for Audio To Text feature specified usage from Vegas Pro 19. I created proxy creation plugin which uses multiple GPU threads (maximum 3) to create proxy files for Vegas Pro. I also written many others plugin/softwares which enhance my video editing, also wedding editing.

With your CPU, rendering I am sure is quite fast. And yes, I would think that rendering with Nvidia right now would point to the issue. I don't know if your V6 build is the latest or not though. Or a driver issue?

Yes, my CPU is effcient, but I suppose that my GPU is more efficient than CPU, that's why I would like use GPU in that case.

@marcinzm Here's an instance where I found the stabilization broke with Mercalli V5 in Vegas 23 (302). I started a project in Vegas Pro 22 and stabilized your video using the Mercalli V5, Forensic option. I rendered using NVENC and Intel QSV successfully. Then I opened the project in Vegas Pro 23 and rendered twice using NVENC and Intel QSV. At first it looked like the stabilization was in effect, but actually it wasn't. The video was shaking although the forensic frame was bobbing around like it was stabilized. I found that I had to click the Analyze button on Mercalli to reanalyze the footage again in V23. Then it rendered successfully. So, something is broken when you open a project started in V22 with Mercalli V5 and then open the project in V23. The stabilization gets messed up.

I don't see a difference in results between M4, M5 and M6...the only disadvantage I could imagine between the SAL and OFX version is the one more extra render generation of the SAL version. Bur as stabilization of trimmed events in a timeline is faster and more accurate than stabilization of a complete event in SAL. I would always prefer stabilization directly in the timeline above stabilization in the SAL.

bitman wrote on 1/13/2026, 2:08 AM

@marcinzm I prefer OFX v6 and use it a lot in VP23, as @3POINT mentioned, I do not like the extra render (de)generation when using SAL and trimmed events are more accurately stabilized.
Batch generation with Vegasaur as @3POINT mentioned could be a pro for SAL in some workflows, but that still has the issue of the extra render (de)generation, the longer rendering (as you render 2x and longer analysis (as the clips are not trimmed individually), and batch generation has no way to individually manipulate the stabilization.
@Robert Johnston The fact that you need to re-analyze Mercalli in projects from VP22 to VP23 is probably due to a different "enhanced" HW decoding treatment or pipeline in VP23, that new decoding is not without it issues, in fact a project in VP23 with stabilization done in Mercalli with the file/IO decoding set to enable legacy AVC decoding in VP23, will have to redo the analysis if the legacy setting is back to its default (disabled).
So even when staying in VP23 you may need to re-analyze again depending on the decoding setting.
Probably the Mercalli stabilizing is not broken from VP22 to VP23 if the VP22 project in VP23 is opened with legacy AVC decoding enabled (maybe give it a try)

I’ve mentioned quite a few times over the years on the forum that I still use Mercalli 5 SAL even though I have Mercalli 4 for Vegas Pro.  A bit of background: I had Merc 4 SAL and the upgrade to Merc 5 SAL was free – the info on ProDad’s website at the time said that there were no new features in 5, it was just ‘technological’ improvements.  I suspect that the same applied to 5 for Vegas because I did the 5 trial version but could not detect any difference at all between 5 and 4 so chose not to pay for that upgrade.

I bought Merc 6 SAL at the time of it’s release but have rarely used it, the reason being that I really miss the ability in 4 and 5 SAL to choose camera modes especially of Universal, Glide and Rock-Steady – for me, leaving it to AI and a few imprecise controls that quickly reach their limits of effect has not provided acceptable results.  I’ve followed ProDad’s Merc 6 tutorials but without real success.  However, what has been good is that Merc 6 SAL’s results have been good with reducing artifacts particularly on closer shots where the trailing edge of a walking leg past complex hotch-potch backgrounds sometimes is trailed by artifacts in Merc 5 SAL.

Either way, the great thing about Merc SAL is the ability to rename media as well as to bulk render.

An hour or so ago, I downloaded the trial of Merc 6 OFX and will test it out in the days to come.

@3POINT @bitman @andyrpsmith  ... To get to the point with Merc 6 OFX, do you easily get Merc 6 OFX to achieve stab results similar to that of Universal, Glide and Rock-Steady camera modes that are so easily available in Merc 5 SAL?

@Dexcon I have only a trial version of M6 OFX and hardly use any stabilization anymore since I film with gimbal, about 6 years now. I used Stabilization before on older handheld cameras and didn’t have a need to upgrade my M4 plugin for Vegas. Also since I discovered that for some stabilization the free Davinci Resolve stabilization performs better than Mercalli. I did several tests with M6 SAL as M6 OFX and couldn't get better results as with my M4 plugin which I can use for bulk rendering with Vegasaur. So for me again no need to upgrade.

andyrpsmith wrote on 1/13/2026, 6:33 AM

I don't use the SAL versions. My go to was always the depreciated V2 in Vegas at default settings. But as we all know this version was written for HD clips, it does work with 4K but can crash about 10% of the time. I lived with that and save before every stabilization. Used V4 for a few years with OK results but it has its limitations. My main reason for using is to remove slight rotation/wobble I often get when using the camcorder. V2 was just great for that. For more heavy movement (usually rare for me), V2 is not as good as V4 but V4 can still exhibit jelly wobble if the movement is excessive. Yes V4 has many options to play with. Not had much success with the Vegas version which I think maybe based on Mercalli V4 version. V5 was an update to stabilize in real time, it was a failure for me ( I only used the trial) most times the result was worse than V4. V6 OFX has been great, fast, and virtually no jelly wobble in any of the clips. It worked wonderfully in a max magnification clip across the sea with the Titanic launch area. I have found the AI process to work well and overall a significant improvement for my footage over all others I have tried. The default setting finally means I can dump the V2 depreciated version for fast stabilization of mild rotation/movement. The other more sophisticated settings have proved excellent in taking out more complicated shake. For £/$ 35 upgrade is an absolute bargain in my mind. Also I find Vegas 22 does not drop frames on the timeline while V23 does when using V6 ofx. My footage is 4K XAVCS.

@3POINT Indeed, it will save extra clicks, good tip by the way!
However, I will still have to do individual tweaks (per clip) like the stabilize % vs crop % after the analysis.

If you intend contributing to this forum please study the Community Rules. There is a link at the bottom of the page. Here it is https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/community-rules/

Also please tidy up your English language as some of your comments are difficult to understand. Probably this is because you may be using a translator which is not doing a good job?

@Reyfox @Dexcon @marcinzm @J-Toresen I've removed a few OT posts resulting from NewVegas22's post so we can get back to the topic of Mercalli and comments from sensible experienced Vegas users. Hope that's okay with you.

@EricLNZ Ok. Thank you.

If you are bored, drink water, you will want to pee. -> Albert Einstein - my idol!
