I wasnt sure if a deinterlace was required because avchd is upperfield first whereas dvd is lower first

In these cases the order of the fields does not change the result.

"If I set the deinterlace method to "Interpolate", does Vegas now create a frames from the two interlaced frames (upper and lower), which is what interpolation should mean or make on from frame from two interlaced frames and interpolate the between the "jagged edges"; which would be more like 25p in the OP's case."

Assumed we have an interlaced source clip, we zoom into it and we render using "None (progressive)" as field order setting in the render window. Settings in project properties affect it as shown (you'd need to click on the pics to see full size and see the actual result):

Source clip (not yet rendered):

Project Properties: Field Order "None (Progressive Scan)" – "Deinterlace Methode "None":

Project Properties: Field Order "Upper Field First" – "Deinterlace Methode "None":

Project Properties: Field Order "None Progressive Scan" – "Deinterlace Methode "Blend Fields":

Project Properties: Field Order "Upper Field First" – "Deinterlace Methode "Blend Fields":

Project Properties: Field Order "None Progressive Scan" – "Deinterlace Methode "Interpolate Fields":

Project Properties: Field Order "Upper Field First" – "Deinterlace Methode "Interpolate Fields":

You'll see there is zero difference between selecting "Upper Field First" or "None (Progressive Scan)" as field order setting in the project properties.

Deinterlace method "None" sends the both fields at one time to the processing pipeline and zooming in will also zoom/enlarge the interlace lines (which is not desired).
Both deinterlace methods "Blend Fields" and "Interpolate Fields" sends separated fields to the processing pipeline and dependend on what is done after, selecting "Blend" or "Interpolate" will or will not affect further processing.
In case your source clip already is progressive these all doesn't matter.

I could have done this whole test series a second time while then rendering the interlaced source to interlaced output again. In this case it would not matter if deinterlace methode "Blend" or "Interpolate" has been selected in project properties. In both cases result would look same and more or less according to the source (with its natural interlaced properties). Only if I would have selected deinterlace method "None" the result would look different because the zooming now would cause ugly jaggy zoomed lines.
But again there would have been zero difference between selecting field order "None (Progressive)" or "Upper Field First" in project properties.

@Marco. Thank You for your excellent explanation, the best I have seen on this topic and users still working with interlaced footage should bookmark it. I apologize for all the misspellings in my last post, I was typing it on my phone while in the car but I was a passenger and not driving😉
