Prores 8k Render not possible yet?

steve-ohlhaber wrote on 8/10/2025, 3:42 PM

I have vegas pro 20 and even in the trail version of 22 pro, you still cannot seem to render in prores 8k. I see countless posts from people that confuse decode with encode saying, it works. It does not. When you take any video, force it to 7680x3840, the just try to render it, pick Apple Prores 422, then SURPRISE, no 8k templates. OK, custom template, pick width 7680 then.... oops, when you leave that cell, you see the max is 5120. So, nobody ever has actually exported prores out of vegas in 8k still? Is that true? I cannot imagine I am missing anything as anyone can do a quick test and see this. Is there some very strange setting I am missing, because its not any obvious setting I am missing.

Did you try rendering with Voukoder?

BruceUSA wrote on 8/10/2025, 5:12 PM

With Voukoder you can render 8K Prores file. With Magix you only get 5K as you have find out.

ps. The bad news is that, Voukoder 8K and Magix 5K Prores render in Vegas is defective files. Neither video files can play, Vegas or MPC-BE player. Basically it is useless files.

@steve-ohlhaber Voukoder Classic gets 8K done.

@BruceUSA I was able to put the output from Voukoder back on the Vegas Pro 22-250 timeline and it played. It seems to work as an intermediate. I have not used ProRes for file exchange. In fact, I don't have much use for 8K since I don't have an 8K source. It's all a thought experiment for me.

@steve-ohlhaber @BruceUSA  I just rendered 8k 7680x3840 & 7680x4320 from VP using Voukoder, they play in MPC player fine & load into VP fine.

John & Gid. Wow. I am glad to know 8K in Voukoder is working in Vegas. It must be something is not right at my end. Oh well.

@steve-ohlhaber A Reddit post explains how to bypass the maximum limit: https://www.reddit.com/r/VegasPro/comments/wo1wpr/solution_to_max_height_reverting_back_to_2304/

It still works on ProRes. I recorded a video to show how I made it work.

Using VEGAS Pro 22 build 248 & VEGAS Pro 21 build 208.

Information about my PC:

System: Windows 11.0 (64-bit) 10.00.22631

Thanks for the video. As VEGAS can actually do it and ProRes supports any frame size, I wonder if this is a bug in the render interface?

steve-ohlhaber wrote on 8/11/2025, 12:33 AM

Thanks zzzzzz9125. Got it to work. Just mind blown that this bug has been there for years. Has to be a bug. Its sad that everyone instantly runs to some 3rd party instead of getting Magix fixing a simple interface bug. I doubt there is a reason they would limit prores encoding to 5120 for any reason. I normally can just dump stuff out uncompressed, but on bigger projects that is too much drive space, but you do not suffer a generation loss. I never have liked the encoder inside vegas. I may look into Voukoder, but why bother if this works.

@steve-ohlhaber may I ask for what purpose you need a 8k prores render?

I've used Voukoder to render 8K 3D and VR180 clips.

I need to look into Voukoder to see how I can do 2 pass h265 easily with quality. Everything is 8k for many years for me, so initially this was just not possible in vegas so I got used to exported uncompressed 8k forever then recompressed with TMPGENC. I also make previews using nvenc, which is simpler, so switching to a different software for the intermediate doesnt add any extra steps since I need a quick render to preview first anyways. Making an intermediate allows me to crunch a quick preview, then if that is good do a slow 2 pass. If this all worked inside vegas in a simple way that would be nice. It would just mean that I stay in 1 app instead of do all the preview and final renders with a different app, which I also like TMPGENC due to its auto bitrate settings and simple editing features. Its sort of a better video mastering tool than vegas. I use that for what everyone seems to use Voukoder for. Its the same for audio - you rarely master your audio with the mixing tools. Basically, nobody likes the vegas encoder process. My problem is the quality looked bad in tests and the steps to do 2 pass was crazy and no easy auto bit rates as I shoot crazy weird aspect ratios and formats, so I dont want to ever break out a calculator to check bitrates for a res and framerate, that should be automatic.

@steve-ohlhaber which 8k camera do you use?
