Proxy files rendering won't work?

FreyaStrawberry wrote on 6/8/2018, 5:45 AM

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum. The support hasn't been answering me on this for over a week so I thought I'd try here. I hope I can make myself clear in English.

I use Vegas Pro 15 Edit (Build 261) on Windows 10, intel Core i3.

For my new project I filmed about 45 GB of footage in FHD, the edited thing is going to be 5:30 mins in length. I figured this would be a little much for the hardware I'm using, so I tried the following:

- converted a test clip to a lower resolution.
- saved the new file in folder A.
- kept the original file in folder B under the same file name.
- made a small test edit on the converted low res file in Vegas.
- went to render it.
- checked the box with "replacing files while rendering" (translated from my German version).
- clicked "Render".
- had a window opening to select the folder for replacing the file.
- selected folder B.
- window closes.
- nothing happens.
- clicked "Render" again.
- window opens.
- I select the folder again.
- window closes, nothing else happens.

This repeats itself over and over. When I finally click Cancel, Vegas starts to render the file in low res.

Is this a bug or what am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help!

Freya :)

I can't check your workflow right now but why don't you simply use the Vegas integrated proxy workflow which would completely automate all that stuff?

Are you sure the files have exactly the same name? That sounds to me like Vegas couldn't find the files.

One reason to not use Vegas's automatic proxy system is that it renders the proxy files extremely slowly.

I use Vegasaur for that reason. Also, vegasaur will give you options on render formats for the proxies, Vegas doesn't.

Rename the folder where your proxies are located. When Vegas complains that it can’t find the files, navigate to the B folder and replace proxy files with full size files. Render.

My camera creates proxies in camera but I haven’t used them, so I turned the feature off.

Just to clarify, this is a new feature that was introduced in VP15 with very little in the way of announcement or fanfare. I like it because it gives Vegas a native proxy workflow without forcing you into 1280x720 XDCAM EX proxies that (I think) the older proxy function uses. I just checked in VP15 build 361 and it does work for me.

As others have said, the root of the filename must be identical.

After you have checked "Swap Video Files on Render" under the "Render Options" then clicked "Render" then chosen your "originals" folder, you have to patiently wait for the files on the timeline to swap and the "Video Swap Summary" window to pop up. This takes some time. (Note that this is the same window that pops up if you use the new "Swap Video Files" command in the file context menu in the Project Media window). Then when you click "OK" it should go ahead and render with the original files then swap the files on the timeline back to the proxies.

Usage of this is not very intuitive. The "Swap Video Files on Render" box always unchecks itself after a render, so you have to go into that menu each time and check it. I really wish those options were "out there" on the main GUI.

Here's a quick demo:
