Q's for Peter.

Peter,

How would one save all relative .wavs, and bus/effect
settings for portability? I would like to be able to save
a song in progress in Vegas, (and Acid as well), burn a cd
of all the files, and then take it from one studio to the
next to mix in a better room. I realize I would need two
copies of the program and all of the same plug-ins at each
end. Studios would love this feature, but I'd hate to drag
a removable drive along.

It would be great to save the work, all the plug-in and bus
settings, as well as automation and pan settings on a cd.
One could then open a work in progress elsewhere to finish
up. Is this possible already? I know it works for Acid
because I see the demo songs that can be downloaded
intact. How is it done in Acid, by saving all of the loops
and .wavs and naming it all to one folder? How would one
do so for Vegas?

This could take a potentially large amount of harddrive space.

There is an option when you do a "Save As" to copy all meida with a
project. This will move all the media associated/in use with a
project to a single directory. The limitation with this is that even
if you only use a few seconds of say a 4 minute file, the entire 4
minute file is moved. If you have a project that is constructed out
of long takes, this can add up very fast.

As far as storing settings and such, Vegas stores the mixer settings
in general, all plugins settings, and any other project preferences
you may have set up. The Mixer settings do not include hardware
specifics - i.e. if you are using a Gina on your home machine, but
the studio has say a CardDeluxe, the hardware device information is
not saved. Instead only the number of busses, FX sends, bus insert FX
are all preserved. You would have to tell the studio's installation
of Vegas how the main busses are routed.

Any FX you have in a project must be installed on the host, otherwise
Vegas will yell at you. The project will load, but the missing FX
will not - cannot - be maintained. There is no provision in the
DirectX plugin filter design to be able to "package" the actual fx
for transfer. (Would be like having the ability for a true type font
to be embedded in the document you send. I can be used with the
document, but only with that document. Would be nice feature of
plugins, but it does not exist.)

So, yes you can, but the transfer medium would have to handle
potentially large files. Much greater than a CD ROM in many cases.
Using removable harddrives is what some are doing now. It is cheap to
purchase a 4-6 gig harddrive and you always have the original project
available.

We are working/looking at better solutions to moving project and
their associated media for just this reason - and other reasons.
Today, it will involve some manual labor on your part and a back up
medium that can handle the media files.

Hey, I just want the relevant wav files, and am having a hell of a
time getting someone to understand why.

Carl:

I understand - as do many others - what you want and why you want it.
Sonic Foundry is aware of the media managment short commings of
Vegas. You are not the first, nor will you be the last that want this
feature in one form or another. File and project managment is on our
list.

We have had many detailed descriptions of how users want this to
work.

My response below offers what we do today. I can't offer you how we
will do it in the future or when such a feature will be released.

Nobody is ignoring you. I promise you this!
