Quicktime security and flaws...

Wondering if a possible workaround might be to remove Quicktime and then use a program like Convert V3 Video Utility to convert the files to DNxHD before moving them into Vegas. Does that sound like a valid workaround?

Adobe says uninstalling QT would break AdobeCreativeCloud applications.

To my understanding Vegas needs the DNxHD in a MOV wrapper. So I doubt that would work any better. My DNxHD from an Atomos Samurai Blade will not work without the QuickTimePlayer.exe in Vegas Pro 13.

Converting to a form of mxf, m2ts, mp4, etc with that program may work.

Cliptoolz Convert does not need or use Quicktime to transcode to DNxHD, but Vegas still uses Quicktime to import those DNxHD files. Vegas does not have native DNxHD support and Avid only makes the codecs available for the Quicktime subsystem. Of course, If Avid did install DirectShow codecs that still would not help since Vegas does not support DirectShow. Only if Avid installed Video for Windows codecs would you be good to go.

Those last statements are contrast to how GoPro Cineform installs codecs. It installs into Video for Windows, DirectShow and Quicktime.

Looks like shortly after this thread settled down, some related info was posted to the help center. Doubt this is the last word, but it is helpful.

https://www.custcenter.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5197/

Operative bit seems to be this paragraph:

QuickTime is required to read .mp4 and .mov containing ProRes, CineForm, and other QuickTime based or installed video codecs. Uninstalling QuickTime for Windows will remove support for these formats in these applications. If using CineForm, we recommend that you re-wrap into AVI format.

I thought Cineform was in AVI format!

GoPro installs Video for Windows (aka AVI) and Quicktime codecs. GoPro studio will let you output to either AVI or MOV.
videoITguy wrote on 5/7/2016, 9:30 PM
Word to the wise: There are codecs and there are wrappers or containers.
AVI and Mov are containers and not codecs. Cineform is a codec that can either be wrapped in AVI or Mov.
PeterDuke wrote on 5/8/2016, 9:33 AM
Yes but I thought that the default container for Cineform was AVI. If GoPro have changed that since they took it over then it is news to me.

Aren't we supposed to be in the safe side if we are using a decent Anti-Virus & Firewall software such as Norton Internet Security?

In my experience decent and Norton don't belong together in the same sentence.

I have BitDefender free security.
So far so good.
and no 'warning' notification coming from the Quicktime, instead it came from the free LUT Plug-in from vision-color (quarantined)

@Kit .. I have been using Norton since the days of DOS, and I never faced any problem with it. I am very happy with Norton, and most trusted reviews consider it the best overall.

@set .. I faced the same problem with the LUT plugin.

Not installing the player, and everything else, still prevents Vegas Pro from loading ProRes files.

I may almost agree with the rest of his blog post.

Hopefully SCS can issue an update that can use Quicktime without a full install. Other apps can use the Quicktime subsystem with just the "essentials" portion(s) installed.
woodcoaster wrote on 5/28/2016, 11:08 PM
Parts of SCS now sold to MAGIX. Went to their website. They have a fix for their Software and my "gut feeling" they will follow through with a fix for Video Studio and Pro.

As far as I know it still requires Quicktime to be installed for some formats. QuickTime 7 for Windows is still no longer supported by Apple. Some people think that's a problem. I don't really.
