>Sony ProEdit sounds like a serious tool. "Sony Vegas Pro" does not

Does "Apple" sound like having anything to do with a machine doing computing?
"Sony ProEdit" is too dry and unspecific too me. "Sony Videoshop" sound better in my ears. But - Keep the name, for God's sake. Re-branding costs a bunch of money, than can be used on improving the product.

"Google" sounds pretty serious. I only use that word in business conversations.

Same goes with "Bing".

"It may as well be called Sony Reno!

You know, I always thought instead of Movie Studio, it would've been funny if they named it Sony Reno. It would've kind of made sense. After all, Reno is a lesser version of Vegas.

"I hate ProEdit."

Hate is a very strong word, what do you say when you really hate something?

Many years ago in the linear age, I edited for a long time using a program called Video Machine by Fast Multimedia. When I told anyone I use Fast Video Machine, first question was "how fast is it".
They developed a system, named it "Blue" which, at the time, would take ANY and ALL formats in and output to ANY format. The name Blue stuck.
It was eventually sold to Pinnacle, who wrecked it and sold it to someone else and eventually to Avid which, I think, is their Liquid system. I don't know if it's anything like the original or not.
I don't care what it's called, as long as it works.

I just don't care what they call it as long as its around and they're supporting it. Really, if they changed the name to "n00b eDIT" I wouldn't even bat an eye and I'd still be a fan. It's about what it does, not what it's called. I stand by my work and what I do and I have never felt anything but proud to say to anyone in the field I use Sony Vegas, if they don't get it, they're the ones that are missing out.

I vote we call it ……Vaguest

Like how much is this job gonna cost me ……uumm how much you got = vaguest
How long is this gonna take……….uuumm that depends = vaguest
Will this be ready on time ……….ummm depends on = vaguest

Non committal = cant get into trouble = Vaguest = the video editors dream

All of us benefit if more people start using Vegas. Like it or not a name is a brand and people are influenced by those types of things. Just look at how effective Apple is at creating a perception that you need a Mac to do creative work. So if renaming Vegas can get it more popular in the mainstream than I'm all for it because I want this product to be developed and supported well into the future. More people using Vegas = more possibility of that happening.

I'm for leaving well alone. Sony

Vegas is coming increasingly to the forefront. I feel that, if there is a problem, it is more one of proper and aggressive marketing than simply taking the soft option of changing the name with the need then to start building up a reputation all over again from scratch.

And, by the by, how many new CEO's or Boards have we seen change a name, a logo or a recoginsable identification colour as they try to assert themselves and how many of these have succeded in capturing the public's attention? Not many!

The arbitrary aspects of sound and meaning are always in flux.

And so with names, new associations are always emerging and old ones passing away.

For us personally, our name develops as our character develops. Our same name (and its diminutive forms) can incorporate a number of distinct phases. We can live into, down to, up to, and beyond our names.

What kind of character is Vegas Pro developing and how is it living into its name? I see a multi-talented, creatively-versatile, community-oriented prodigy, having some growing pains, knocking its head on shelf-corners, but maturing quite well.

My vote: status quo.
