Rendering in Vegas Movie Studio 14 Platinum causes computer to reboot

MissUnderstood wrote on 6/23/2023, 1:48 PM

Hi.  Each time I try to render a 45 second video in Vegas Movie Studio 14 Platinum, it gets up to 16%, then my computer reboots.

GPU acceleration of video processing is OFF.

Enable multi-core rendering for playback has Value: TRUE  Default: TRUE

Enable multi stream render has Value: FALSE  Default: FALSE.

I'm working on Windows 10.

Processor: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU           W3550  @ 3.07GHz   3.05 GHz

Installed RAM: 12.0 GB

System type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

SSD: 1 TB

I went for a while without using this program, then I started using it more frequently about a month ago.  I had no problems with rendering. Once while starting the program, I got a message about a patch to download.  After downloading the patch, I had some trouble rendering a video.  It froze each time I tried to render it.  I created a new project with the exact same files that were freezing and the video rendered.  Since this process worked before, about a month ago, I tried it again today to see if it would work.  It didn't. The computer continues to reboot each time the video starts rendering.  Does anyone have suggestions on what to do?

Does it sound like I might have to uninstall and reinstall Sony Vegas?

First of all, what's at the 16% point on the timeline? It could simply be a bad clip on the timeline.

Second, it's not "Sony". https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/sony-vegas-vs-vegas--119881/

Thirdly, this program did not get any patch the last 5-6 years
Fourth, resetting is much, much better than reïnstalling if the prgram has worked before

Sorry about that. Since I purchased v11 way back when, I got into the habit of calling it Sony. Thanks for the link.

Great idea about the clip! However, there seems to be an issue with the timeline. After removing the clip, it took several tries before I was able to move the video to the left to fill in the space. I'm not able to move the audio at all.

I tried rendering one last time before I reset the program. It got up to 37% before rebooting. When I followed your steps above (it's a little different with Movie Studio), my computer rebooted after 8% of the video was rendered.

Are the following settings correct?

Enable multi-core rendering for playback has Value: TRUE  Default: TRUE

Enable multi stream render has Value: FALSE  Default: FALSE.

They are correct, but where do you find those settings?
When you try to render your video what exactly do you choose and which rendertemplate?
What are your sourcefiles? MediaInfo please

I found the settings following these steps:

Options

Press and hold CTRL + Shift while clicking on Preferences

Go to the Internal tab

At the bottom type in: enable multi

I've tried rending using both:

Project/Render As... and

Make Movie/Save it to my hard drive/MP4

When beginning the project, I chose:

Video: Internet Video (I always use this one with my cell video)

Internet (HD) 24p

Manage project files

When I dragged the first file down to the timeline I got the question:

Do you want to set your project video setting to match this media?

I chose No.

I created custom settings in both Project Properties and Render As...

In Render As, I chose to put my custom settings in the templates for:

Formats: MainConcept AVC/AAC because one of the templates was Internet HD 1080p. So, it seemed like the correct one to choose. The end format is showing as mp4.

Am I doing something that is obviously wrong and fixable? Or will I have to uninstall and reinstall the program?

Thanks for your help with this.

A lot of times a reboot is caused by overheating. Make sure your computer is clean and air is able to move thru without obstruction.

I always use this one with my cell video

Cell (mobile) phone video is almost always recorded in a Variable Frame Rate (VFR). The variation in frame rate can vary enormously. Please upload a detailed MediaInfo report (a free app) on your phone video. Vegas NLEs have often had a problem with dealing with VFR video and that "may" be causing a problem with rendering. It's very often been recommended on the forum for years to transcode VFR video to Constant Rate (CFR) video via either of the free HandBrake or Shutter Encoder apps and use the transcodes in Vegas NLEs rather than the original VFR video.
