Right-click, Transition menu

sRecollet wrote on 11/13/2021, 6:00 PM

When right click in between clips and going to Transitions...(I'm on 19 btw) but been the same for awhile now. It just gives you convert to cut, change to crossfade and change to others. I remember many Vegas' ago it would have more listed there, like the last few ones you most commonly used I think, but not anymore. I ask 'cause I use a certain one all the time and I mean ALL the time so it's a bit tedious always have to go to change to others, then picking the one I use, when just having it right there on right click would be nice. Is there a way to get more transitions listed there? Probably not huh 'cause expecting can't just change/add to menu like that?

I have one transition that I've used recently listed in the shortcut menu, but it doesn't appear to change when I select a different one - nor do other transitions appear here after having added/changed them.

@sRecollet
I'm not quite sure what you mean - is it the fade type?
If not - show a screenshot to make it clearer.

Exactly like Photo_G's image but I don't get that extra one to show up "Insert RGB Shift". Just the default ones. I remember many Vegas' ago, like really long ago. Yea, they would show up there, like your most commonly or last used ones. I use flash and dissolve so many times too so would be very nice to have them there.

@walter-i., The transition shortcut is available by overlapping two clips and right clicking on the overlap. I also searched all of the preferences and don't see a way to control the behavior.

Ah so.....I didn't know about this selection function at all.
I have marked my favourite transitions as favourites and use them for selection (I think that's very good about Vegas, that there are several possibilities and everyone can tailor their own favourite workflow.

Nevertheless - for me, under the point you mentioned, the last three transitions are displayed for quick selection, and when I select "Insert other.....", I get to the page where I can choose from all the transitions.

Edit:
I have now started and tested Vegas Pro 15 and Vegas Pro 19 again.
Both show the last - and (maximum) 5 transitions.

Sarcasm on:
If that's too little, you use (way) too many transitions....
Sarcasm off.

@sRecollet I have discovered that the transition shortcut history will update if you drag a transition [edit: from the transitions tab] to a crossfade and hold down control before dropping it. I now have this on my shortcut menu:

Update: Interestingly, the menu now populates whenever I drag a transition to the crossfade, even without holding control. The menu history limit is 5 as @walter-i. pointed out, which looks like it operates in a first-in-last-out manner.

However, if I leverage the "Change to Other" option, the menu history does not update. Maybe this is a good way to get to the behavior requested by @sRecollet, e.g., drag the frequently used transitions [edit: from the transitions tab] using control (at first), then use the shortcut menu for any additional changes or inserts. Using this process, it looks like the transition shortcut history will most likely retain the original (control-drag) selections for frequent reuse.

Update: It appears to be working that way for me, even after a program restart! If I now want to insert a new transition that's not on the list, I create a crossfade, right click on it, select Transition, click 'Insert Other', and pick one. The transition shortcut menu doesn't update. To modify an existing transition without a shortcut menu update, I do the same steps but click 'Change to Other'. Then, when I want to add a new transition to the shortcut menu for frequent reuse, I just drag/drop it from the transitions tab and it pops up at the top of the (rotating) list of five.

Thanks, will try that when I get a chance! Such a tedious thing for me considering how often I use transitions :)

OK what am I dragging? After I click Insert Other and plug-in window opens with all other transitions? and control, drag from there? I'm confused, can't get anything updated on shortcut menu.

Photo_G wrote on 11/14/2021, 8:05 PM

@sRecollet You would control drag a transition from the Transitions tab to the crossfade. Here is an example:

Note that dragging from the tab updates the list in the shortcut menu, but changing (or inserting) from the shortcut menu doesn't update the list. For me, the shortcut menu list wouldn't update at all until I performed the control drag but, after I did it once (or twice), it now updates by just dragging - without holding control. YMMV.

Apologies for the lack of clarity, hopefully this will help! Also, thanks for sharing your workflow! I can tell that I will be using the transitions shortcut a lot going forward. 😀

Have you ever looked closely at a professionally made film and counted how many transitions are used, and in contrast how many hard cuts are made?

Just to think about it.

I'm not against well-placed transitions, just too frequent use of them.

sRecollet wrote on 11/16/2021, 8:51 AM

@Photo_G Oh thanks!, totally forgot about using transitions through that menu. Was trying through other way from "Insert Other" tab. Will try in a bit, hopefully sticks to my shortcut menu like you :) Will help so much.

Edit: Just tried and it works! Such a life saver! Thank - you! :) As you can see, that's a decent amount of cuts/transitions for a 3:45 minute video.

@walter-i. Well I make short 3 - 5 minute videos that are very high paced with music in background and it's all about timing with me. So I have hundreds of cuts in a video and almost all of them are perfectly cut to be in synchronization with the song so I use a quick flash a lot. It's even cut down to just overlap by 4 frames so it's literally as quick as a blink. lol kinda like tricking one's brain into seemingly watching the video and getting drawn/sucked in, lol if that makes sense. Been doing this method for nearly 20 years now. I don't know, with my videos if transitions aren't always aligned with the timing of a song then I have trouble watching it myself. As you can see in image, that's the amount of transitions and cuts in just a 3:45 minute video.

walter-i. wrote on 11/16/2021, 3:48 PM

Is it possible to see these videos somewhere - for example: Youtube, to get an impression of them?

@Photo_G Thanks! 😀 btw, how I resolve thread? Haven't posted in the longest time.

Photo_G wrote on 11/17/2021, 1:36 PM

I think there is an option to mark a response as the solution (on the 'more' menu), which changes the title to resolved.

@sRecollet
Use the button "Tag as solution" which is displayed (only) to the creator of the post (and of course to the moderators).
