Scrubbing audio

JackW wrote on 1/25/2004, 10:34 AM
Back in the era of reel-to-reel audio it was possible to disengage the clutch and scrub the tape across the playback head, thus hearing exactly where you were in the tape. Many analog edit controllers gave the same option -- audio audible while using the jog shuttle to scrub through the video..

Is it possible to do this in Vegas? I've tried to find a way to do this in either the trimmer or on an audio track but haven't found it. It's great being able to zoom in on the audio track and identify sounds with frame accuracy, but it would be nice to be able to scrub the video and hear the audio at the same time.

One way is the J-K-L "shuttle" keys that seem to work great for me... although I do also have one of those "Contour Shuttle " devices that makes it even easier.

Also use the yellow triangle below the track headers to increase or decrease playback rate. Zoomed in to the frame level, the cursor flies through the TL view to quickly at normal playback speed. John.

You can also hold down the CTRL key while dragging the timeline. However, you must turn ON this option in the preferences.

No, not in Vegas. Premiere has proper scrubbing.

okay dokey then.

...one detail that's a little bad: J-K-L won't work in Explorer window. I'd so much like it to work from everywhere in Vegas.

Since switching from Premiere I'm greatly missing hearing the audio as I drag the cursor with the mouse.

So, click while you drag....or get a shuttle device.

Hmmm, I must be missing something here. Doesn’t the Scrub Control Slider (just left of the transport controls) do exactly what JackW asked for, variable speed scrubbing of video and audio together?

Yes, that's exactly what it does. Holding CTRL while scrubbing with the cursor accomplishes the same thing.

What would REALLY be neat (at least up to 2x) would be to have the scrub done without the pitch change. Obviously all the code is there to do this (since Vegas can change audio duration without changing pitch). Sure would be useful to have this as an option while scrubbing.

I know about the on-screen scrubber control, I know about holding down <CTRL> while I'm dragging, and I already have a Controur Shuttle Pro 2. None of these do I want.

Here's the scenario... I want to split an event right after someone has finished saying something in the middle of a load of other noise. In Premiere I would grab the cursor, drag it across the event, and I would get the audio following my mouse movement in real time so I could find my split point very quickly by listening carefully.

With the shuttle/<CTRL>/scrubber method there's always a bit of lag and bit of backwards and forwards before finding the right point. Maybe my problem is that I'm not up to speed with the shuttle yet, but I really can't forsee me making this kind of edit as quickly like this as my old method.

Basically what I'm asking for is an option to un-mute audio while I'm dragging the cursor. Believe me, I think Premiere Pro and Premiere are pants compared to Vegas, but this is one of the few areas where they are better for me, and (JohnM) the pitch is not altered too.

While we're at it, I'd also like to hear the audio while spinning my jog wheel (aluminium one in the middle of the shuttle).

I just tried the Ctrl-drag method, and the control lags, just like you say, and is very coarse. I don't see how it could be useful for much of anything. Dragging the rate control gives you very fine control, and no lag, but you have to move the mouse away from the cursor and the event. However, this looks like it will give you the closest approximation to what you want. JKL scrub is the one I use, and it sure it quick, but it doesn't have the "intuitive" feel that moving the mouse back and forth gives you.

Wait, let me try something ...

[Edit] In my original post, I recommended using the hidden "internal" settings to change a value that can be set in the General tab of the Preferences dialog. I have removed info from this post about using the internal settings, because you can get the same results simply by using the General settings. See below.

In the Options menu, General tab, you will find a setting called "Linear Scrub." Uncheck this. Also, make sure that "Allow Ctrl+drag cursor style scrub over events" is checked. Click on OK to save.

Try scrubbing on the timeline while holding the Ctrl key and report back and tell us if you like this. I think it gets you pretty close to what you want. There is still a small lag, but you now get very fine control over the speed change.

P.S. The usual disclaimer about messing with the hidden Internal dialog always applies: You can really screw up Vegas if you change things in here that you shouldn't. Resist all temptations to start playing around.

"Use Linear Scrub Range" is also available in General tab.

I agree with Bubblevision, audio scrub with mouse is a good feature..

Rosebud,

You are correct. I missed it. I edited my post above to remove the internal settings info and instead show how to do it just using the settings on the General tab. Thanks!

Don't forget, if you have a wheel mouse, you can also scrub by hovering the cursor over the scrub control and rolling the mouse wheel. I personally like this method a lot, as it gives very good control, kind of like a scrub wheel.
NickHope wrote on 9/21/2004, 10:45 PM
It's an interesting option John, but having played with it I've settled on leaving the option checked so that I can shuttle faster when needed (20x max vs 4x).

Maybe the lack of audio scrubbing while dragging the cursor is exactly what I need to get me using my Shuttle Pro more.

I will put in a feature request with Sony.

This is a feature missing in Vegas, which is odd, since Vegas is so audio heavy. With Premiere you can drag the cursor quickly from one end of the timeline to the other as fast (much faster than 20x) or slow as you like, and you hear the audio in real-time. It may not be intelligible, but you can at least tell the difference between talking, audio gaps, and different music sections. Very useful.
