JJK is 100% right IMO. I use Auto-Ripple to open ANYWHERE on the timeline ANYTIME. This is the single best tool in Vegas for me. It is so easy and Auto-Ripple will move everything on the timeline behind the event your clicking on including envelopes.

DaveM2, here's the script you want.
Hope it works for you Mike (RS170a)

I see you can add an icon to the tools/scripting menu, but I couldn't find how one would add a shortcut key to a script or an icon on the toolbar to the script. Any way to get a shortcut to this script without navigating Tools/Scripting ?

Dave, you can put any script on the tool bar or assign it to a keypress. If you want it assigned to a keypress, just go to Options - Customize Keyboard and the script will be listed in the list.

Thanks Ed. Found it - both for Excalibur and the script Mike posted. Messed around with the tabs in shortcuts for a while - but using the search feature worked welll.

I put an icon for Excalibur in the toolbar (I am working with the trial version right now) and I noticed that sometimes the icon disappears from the toolbar - although there is a placeholder in the toolbar for it (blank area where if I hover it say "Excalibur". Since I know where the icon should be, it's not a big deal - but I wonder what I did to lose the icon.

I am stating to get my workflow down. Thanks for the help.

Losing the icon is a Vegas issue. You might try Tools - Scripting - Rescan Script Menu. Or simply close and restart Vegas. The icon should come back then.

.....I liked being able to open up a section of the timeline to place a series of new clips to see if I liked them there

I like doing this too. I use AUTO RIPPLE to add events to the middle of the timeline. If you do you will not have to worry about opening up a space large enough to handle what you are adding and conversely AUTO RIPPLE will tighten up the space if you delete anything added. I think learning to use AUTO RIPPLE in all its modes was a biggie for me! I never understood what it was doing and YES sometimes it seemed NOT to effect all the tracks when I wanted it too but that was ME not understanding. AUTO RIPPLE works!

But one more thought. Sometimes I choose to open a new instances of Vegas and create a new .veg to "play" with a sequence that will be added to the middle of the timeline. This way I have no fear of messing up the rest of the timeline. I can then use AUTO RIPPLE to add this as a nested veg to the timeline. The sequence can then be easily moved, reworked or deleted. I'm using this method more and more.

While auto-ripple is nice, it doesn't always do what I want. Plus, I don't like things "moving by themselves". Therefore, If I use ripple editing, I use POST Ripple Editing. However, I still prefer to "select all events after the cursor" and manually move them. Then I can add crossfades (that auto ripple can't know to do) or move them however I want.

I could be wrong about this but from reading several of the posts here, I get the impression that several people don't really understand how auto-ripple can work in Vegas. I have a friend named Martha who I am teaching how to use Vegas and from time to time I produce a quick screen capture video to demonstrate certain features in Vegas to her.

Here is one that I did on Auto-Ripple. The first 5-7 seconds of the video is silence so audio/video will start normally after that amount of time.

I understand how it works. I just don't like it.

Jet,

"However, I still prefer to "select all events after the cursor" and manually move them. Then I can add crossfades (that auto ripple can't know to do) or move them however I want."

Maybe I'm missing something but what you stated above is what I do in Vegas without any scripts and using only auto-ripple. I don't have to select anything other than the one clip that I want everything behind it on the timeline to move. If I want, I can also slide everything forward creating a video and or audio crossfade too. Did you view the video link I posted?

Thanks for that link - very helpful and interesting. I am really finding user comments quite helpful in learning various aspects of editing with Vegas. Thanks.

Do you have any other links to helpful hints ??? :)

Dave,

Most of the videos are to address very specific and very simple operational issues in Vegas that most people already know. Here are a couple that some may not know about. Keep in mind the disclaimer that I am not a certified trainer nor claim any special expertise. Nor are these videos intended to be all inclusive on the subjects.

Eric, let's say I have these three events as cuts:

aaaaaabbbbbbcccccc

Now I want to remove "b". With auto ripple, I will now get

aaaaaaccccc

And this will be cuts. But I really wanted a 1 second overlap/crossfade. So I still have to manually select everything and manually move it one second left. I'd rather just select them to begin with and manually move them than have an auto move and then have to manually move them anyway.

Plus I don't want to have to switch between the various ripple modes depending on what I really want moved. So I find it much easier to just leave ripple turned off and, in the cases where using ripple makes sense, use POST Ripple Edit. But most of the time I use the script to just "select everything after the cursor" because, for me, it's EASIER.
