Setting Transition overlap times in Editing Preferences

Dr Zen wrote on 3/7/2019, 11:15 PM

Hello Brains Trust 🤓
A member on my forum has drawn my attention to some unexpected behaviour in Vegas, which I have never noticed before today.
https://www.moviestudiozen.com/forum/movie-studio-platinum/2223-how-to-set-transition-lengths-to-2-00-seconds

The basic problem is that the time entered for the length of Transition, is shifting by exactly -1 video frame, when adding multiple pieces of media to the timeline.

I did some testing in Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 14, 15 and 16 and also Vegas Pro 14, 15 and 16.
All 6 versions of Vegas are exhibiting the same behaviour.

I would like to know if this is deliberate for a specific reason OR a bug in Vegas ?

Steps to replicate problem:
1. Go to Options/Preferences/Editing
2. Turn ON Automatically overlap multiple selected media when added
3. Set Cut-to-overlap (seconds) = 2.000

4. Import 2 or more videos onto the timeline as a group

I would expect to see an exact 2.000 second overlap, but instead Vegas is shaving off 1x frame of video.
In my example below, the Project is set to 25 fps.
The overlap is calculated as 1 second and 24 frames.

With the Timeline Ruler set to Time only, the Time is reporting as 1.961 instead of 2.000

Regards
Derek

With VMS16 Plat I get the expected 2.00 secs. My project is 25i as is my source material. Using progressive clips and a 25p project I still got 2.00 secs. Setting the timeline to time gives 2.000. Very strange that I'm different.

- I can confirm this behaviour in all my versions Pro except 15 and 16 and all VMS except 16, there this looks like this

- not in Vpro 15 and 16 and VMS 16, there it looks like this

all 50p events

I've now tried VMSP15 Build 157 and I still get the correct overlap.

j-v wrote on 3/8/2019, 3:26 AM

I also, but not when in a new project the first time I dragged 2 files together to the timeline it shows not the full 2 seconds. If I delete those events and do it a second time with the same 2 files I see the full 2 seconds overlap.
@EricLNZ how does it go if you do it the very first time in a fresh project with those settings?

@j-v First time with both VMS 15 & 16 I get the correct amount of overlap.

j-v wrote on 3/8/2019, 5:19 AM

This is how it goes with me ( but only if the default projectsetting has another framerate, when the default one has already the same framerate as the used files it is always 2 full seconds)

Maybe you can trigger it also if you set the framerate of the default projectsetting to another one than the files you are going to use for the test

No problem on VMS16 trial here.

@j-v

Dragging my 25 fps 50i source clips into a 50p project gives no problem. The overlap is correct. I have it set on 1 sec.

Changing the project to 29.070i and dragging the clips in gives an overlap of 29 frames or 0.971 secs. This is understandable as with the NTSC framerate 1 second isn't an exact number of frames. Presumably NTSC users just have to live with this. Anyway it doesn't help the problem as I still cannot reproduce the 1 frame short issue as originally posted by Dr Zen..

Eagle Six wrote on 3/8/2019, 4:54 PM

It appears VP/MS when dealing with NTSC position the end of the overlap on the frame that is just shy of the 2 second mark, and not an additional frame which would exceed the 2 second time. There has to be a rule dealing with NTSC which isn't as easy as PAL being even frames per second. Seems to make sense.

👍👍
Now here it is also normal behaviour and even with a default NTSC framerate in the projectsettings and adding two 50p files first and with that also changing the projectsetting from NTSC to 50p. Everywhere normal behaviour as it belongs to be.
I did a system restore to a point 2 month's ago because my laptop did more strange things and after all went normal, I also tried this item with the result above. Thank you for holding on. 😄

@j-v Are you saying that following your system restore you are now getting the correct overlap every time?

j-v wrote on 3/9/2019, 4:10 AM

Yess and I did completly fresh installs of only the latest builds of VMS Pl 14, 15, 16 and VPRO 14, 15, 16. Everywhere I see the same behaviour as you described here.

Last changed by j-v on 3/9/2019, 4:12 AM, changed a total of 1 times.
