Several questions - VMS17

EfGe wrote on 11/3/2021, 12:19 PM

Hello everybody.

First time here.

I use Vegas in some form or another since I think...Vegas Purple? I don't remember the name, anyway, for years. Nothing too heavy for a long while now.

I currently use Vegas Movie Studio 17, fully updated as far as I am aware.

My hardware is the following:

Intel i7-5960X (stock speeds) an old by now 8 core 16 thread CPU which is clearly not good enough for Windows 11, but that's another topic for another forum.

64GB of DDR4 RAM.

5-6 internal SSDs, 2 of which NVME, same model, a 2TB as a C drive and a 1TB as a "video editing" drive. 300-400GB free on each.

GPU is a Nvidia GTX 1660 Super with 6GB of VRAM.

Now, on to my questions:

1. In the timeline when I have videos, as soon as I zoom in or out, the eh "thumbnails" of the video(s) "refresh". It can take a couple of seconds or more depending on the resolution etc. If I try anything, even just play the video, it's choppy. If I wait for the "refresh" to finish then it's fine. This is killing my speed and my morale. Is there a way to speed it up or stop it from happening? I remember watching a video of some youtuber once where regardless what he did, this "refresh" did not take place. Unfortunately I don't remember who it was. The same 'refresh" happens if I am zoomed enough to not show the whole video and I move left right, or if I just do even a simple split.

2. Vertical 4K videos (2160x3840). I can't have a project with those dimensions. If I import a media file of vertical 1080p and then move the clip to the timeline, the program will ask me if I want it to match the clip's settings. When I do I get a project with the right resolution, vertical 1080p. When I do the same with vertical 4K I get a project resolution of 1215x2160. If I try to manually edit the number it goes up to 2160x2160 and no more. Solution?

3. I have some video files downloaded, mp3 and mp4 which just refuse to be accepted as import files by Vegas. If I try to drag and drop them they never do. If I click on import media they again are unsuccessful. If I use handbrake I can transcode the mp4 so that it is then seen by Vegas, but that is a lot of wasted time. Both can be seen and played by VLC. Interestingly enough the mp3 load in winamp, but can't be played there.

4. I had more, but now my brain refuses to cooperate.

Thank you.

Vegas is not a player but an editor ,so it needs other things as f.i. converters.

Well this sucks, when I bought it I was under the impression that 4K video meant vertical or horizontal. Not your fault of course. Thank you.

You had the chance before you bought it to look with the trial version during 30 days long what you could do and not .

ok I got the program. Never heard of it before, always cool to find new things.

Anyway, the results:

The mp4 has "Format: dash" and codec "dash (iso6/avc1/mp41)"

The mp3 has "Format: dash" and codec "dash (iso6/mp41)"

I don't know if it helps.

EricLNZ wrote on 11/3/2021, 5:48 PM

No it doesn't help. Please post the full info as per the instructions in the first part of the link that j-v gave you.

EfGe wrote on 11/4/2021, 2:17 AM

OK, my bad.

EDIT2: Yeah, I can't get the Vegas video and audio properties as mentioned in the instructions as Vegas won't add the specific files in it.

Thanks for this MediaInfo of your problem files.
Unfortunately I have no experience with dash video and/or audio, but if you can deliver and place here a link to a small file of both on a cloudservice where I (we) can download it unharmed, we can try to find a way to let VMS 17 accept such a file.

Here is a link. It contains 3 files. One mp3, one mp4 and one webm. I can't find a small enough m4a file to upload now, I assume (and we both know how well that goes with me) m4a will work too if the mp3 is.

The site I used for transfer is called WeTransfer. It looks ok.

Oh and because I forgot to add the mediainfo on the webm file, here is that too.

I did a quick look at the videofile and with me I could convert it to mp4 with the free app Handbrake. Look for the result

I'm very busy now, maybe later I have time to look at the other files..

My other NLE accepts your screencaps without issues, no need for media info or handbrake conversions. Unfortunately VMS isn't that format proof and that it's development has been discontinued.

Does Pro work with them or is it the same as VMS17? I have Final Cut Pro X, but I am used to this I rather not have to change, plus my Mac Mini is an old model, not exactly super fast.
