Seriuosly - shouldn't Sony have enough gumption and pull this release (V5b)and show that they are professional. It seems there are too many errors introduced - they should at least acknowledge the failings and publish a warning.
Hear, hear. Is this some sort of cryptic guessing game?
If they aren't saying anything how about those in the 'know' who don't have their hands tied by NDAs filling us in.
At the moment this just sounds like FUD to me.
At the same time I agree with the general sentiment, some of us actually earn a significant part of our income using this product, if there are subtle gotcha we need to know. One I just read about is kind of scary, now maybe I should have checked BUT you don't expect that things that have worked to get broken in minor, subtle ways that can easily slip under your radar. I'd much rather have problems where the thing doesn't run at all.
What really bugs me is obviously a few were in the know and the rest of us weren't warned. Every software house makes stuff ups, myself included, most have the good sense to let their users know. I'd rather work with a buggy product where the bugs are known than a more perfect product with undocumented pitfalls.
Well, I haven't either, which is why I defined it as FUD.
SPOT did sort of mention a problem with the mpeg-2 templates which has me kind of rattled, I've just authored a few DVDs and I did notice that the resulting file sizes were smaller than I expected, seems maybe (I've yet to verify this) that I was encoding using the default bitrate which has somehow become 4 MBits/sec.
Not exactly the end of the world but it would be nice for one of the Sony guys to post warnings of known issues.
I'm suspecting the whole thing is a Grazie red herring.
Sorry guys .. been away chatting and doing some work ..
What do I mean? Why am I saying this? Can I be more specific? . .. WOTZ FUD anyway? .. Forgetting that, I've been reading some of the "reports" on 5b here . . haven't you? I have . . I'm wanting to hear form those of you have had the last 2-3 days to chek it out and come back with a selection of known improvements VIZ known "issues" . .that is all .. nothing more and nothing less . .farss, NDA? Not me Pal! . .Just a straight simple uncomplicated question .. . nothing lurking under the bed .. . at least there wasn't when I last looked . . .
farss .. "I'm suspecting the whole thing is a Grazie red herring." . .no . .fear, scare, client coming round, need my sleep - . . . er .. . yes. farss, Red Herring" ? No. . . in any case why? . . .
Didn't mean to have a dig and I wasn't referring to you as the one with a NDA, exactly the opposite, it sounded like you knew more than the rest of us in which case I was hoping you'd spill the beans. Outside of the one issue I mentioned I know of no new issue introduced into 5.0b.
If you know of any others, perhaps you could enumerate them.
Seriously... ALL software has "bugs". Each new release of any software while it may have new features could and frequenty does leave or introduce new "bugs" so its a trade off. Beta testers can't be expected to find everything that's "wrong" simply because that's a small handful of users. Only after a application is released to the general public do more "bugs" become apparant.
Unlike many other software producers Sony doesn't just have a excellent record of addressing and fixing "bugs" they have a OUTSTANDING track record. But they're only human. As Vegas evolves and grows more complex the likeness of more "bugs" grows. Its just the nature of how software is written. Making changes sometimes no matter how trival can and does impact other sections of code that may not come to light except under particular situations.
hahahah!!! Hate to say "I told you so".
SoFo NEVER released buggy releases. Now that Mother Sony has stepped in, what's happening here?
BTDT!
Why can't these big guys realize that they're messin' with peoples' livelihood? They continue to think this is a toy, or what?
Batch render type scripts failing under certain conditions- that one we're now aware of, there are workarounds, various script writers have updates, we'll have a patch for this one issue soon (not as part of a Vegas 5.0c).
MPEG default template- as with just about every other format, as a general rule you shouldn't use the default template- while that may seem odd in concept, we have no way of knowing what your file delivery needs are, so we try to stuff some reasonable settings based on project properties. Every render format has specific templates that are precisely set up for specific delivery needs, and you need to explicitly pick those. This has been the case for years. You can as always save custom templats with your own tweaked out settings.
SonyEPM, thank you for that . . I'm not having any problems .. because I haven't installed/updated yet . .I just wanted to know what issues I would be "greeted" with . . I like to know what to expect . . this thread is identyfying what I should look out for and NOT get my logic flawed - yeah.
I've downloaded it ready for updating . .. but all I wanted to know was what I should be looking out for and in what direction this could be coming from . . I do USE Excalibur and Tsunami very regulalry . . I wanted to know if there were issues from other users with this .. Now, as time passes I'm starting to feel confident that it will mostly likely be a useful thing ..
SonyEPM - I really liked your simple explanantion of what the default philosophy is . .this makes GREAT sense to me . . of course you want to give us the "overal" option and for us to pick/create what we need - yeah?
Excellent .. good thread this , . . I've learnt loads today . ..
In all fairness, I must say that the reliability of V5 vs. V3 is a push when weighed against the added feature set. I suppose some kind of trade-off exists between features and software reliability. Still, I think the message to Sony should be loud and clear. I abandoned Adobe Premiere, years ago, because of its unreliability. I can do the same with Vegas, if it evolves into a quirky and frustrating product. Let's hope that doesn't happen, 'cuz the good lord just ain't makin' that many good and cheap NLE's.
I just wasted five minutes of my life reading through every post to find out what horrible problems are hidden in 5.0b. I am aware of the script problem, and have posted about it and sent in a bug report. However, that is the only "step backward" as far as I know in 5.0b. I am more than a little ticked off that you would post with a subject line "Shall I wait for V5c" and then not be able to cite one single problem. In fact, it now appears that you have not even used the product.
All I wanted to know was what it was that people were experiencing . . yeah? I personally can't cite one BECAUSE I haven't installed it yet . . Now in your opinion, should I do it or not? Tell you what John, I will still ask the same/simlar questions in the future too - so please take this as a Warning, personally from me to you that I will be looking for guidance in the future too . . About wasting your time? . . Can't help there. .
