Should upgrade from Pro 19 to latest? (tired of crashes) (+some vids)

JohnCorda wrote on 11/27/2023, 6:05 PM

Almost every version of Vegas hits me with constant crashing at some point. I've taught myself to CTRL-S every couple of edits. Some videos it's not so bad, others it can be a major hassle. I operate between two different PCs, one at home, one at my studio, both Windows 10, but the issue can come up in either system. I can't recall the naming structure but I've used Vegas 9, 13,16,17,18, and now Pro 19. Crashing happened less in the older versions. I *want* to change to a different program, but I'm so used to this program, and I can work really quick in it.

How are the latest versions' stability?

Here are some examples of the content I create (sometimes with a lot of effects)

1st person POV trainset view

Performing a funk/synth tune

Creating a beat in the Caribbean

A cartoon edit where I discovered commonalities among these 1930 cartoons (1.4 million views so far)

Download the 30 day trial of VP21 and you can find out how it performs on your system and with the FX you use.

Others appear to find 21 an improved and more table version.

And another useless bug I'd like to see disappear: "an error occurred while starting playback, the request is not enabled for this device"

And any change the software actually now remembers your window layout? I have to hotkey load it every time I restart which - guess what- I have to do a lot...

21 has a lot of bug fixes but usually media is the biggest issue. Stick to constant framerate AVC or ProRes and it's more stable. If you're working with downloaded files how you do the download is really important.

You can share MediaInfo for the media you are using for better advice: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

I'm not using any downloaded clips at all. I use mostly GoPro cameras for my footage, and these days I stick with 1080p from filming to bouncedown.

GoPro's been a problem for VEGAS as well- I'd test the files. Resolution isn't the issue.

What camera brand would you recommend?

@JohnCorda Please post the media info as per RogerS's post.

Some GoPro are totally fine- I've worked with 5-7 files. Seems like there are issues with the latest generation.

I'd wait for the next update or two two VP 21 as there are many media decoding fixes in the works based on the last update and it seems to be helping with HEVC in particular.

I'm not going to blame my cameras for the software crashing

RogerS wrote on 11/27/2023, 11:17 PM

Nor would any of us.

That said give VEGAS media it likes and the chances of crashing are far less.

If the new version remembers my layout upon load up - especially frustrating when crashing starts occurring - then I'll upgrade.

Just to clarify, I have a layout saved under View | Window Layouts and the hotkey is Alt-D-0

Or, have I been missing something, please lmk if I can have this happen automatically upon starting the program.

RogerS wrote on 12/10/2023, 2:46 PM

The layout should be preserved on startup- are you saying it's lost after a crash or just every time you start VEGAS?

I'm mainly using VP 19 and the layout loads when VEGAS loads.

(I also use the advanced save feature in VEGAS to not have to hit save all the time.)

It's every time

RogerS wrote on 12/10/2023, 2:52 PM

That's not normal behavior for VEGAS. Try resetting 19: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/
