Slow writing speed on SSD while rendering

Hey Vegas community,

I'm working with Vegas 18 Pro (Build 527) and when I render a video to my Samsung 980 Pro 2TB M.2 the write speed visible in the task manager is pretty slow, it jumps between 40-80 MB/s. Also it takes ages to render.



The project files and the Vegas project are on a Samsung EVO 870 4TB, the read speed jumps between 150-170 MB/s

Both seem relatively slow for a SSD, especially for a 980 Pro which is capable of 7000 MB/s

Here are my computer specs:

Windows 10 Pro
64GB DDR5 RAM
ROG MAXIMUS Z690 HERO
i9-12900K
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080
 

I render the video in the AppleProRes HQ 1920 x 1080 format.

Are these normal read / write values for Vegas or is there some kind of problem in my configuration?

And would it benefit performance wise to update to Vegas 20?

You can see it yourself by trying it for 30 days with the trial version.

The write speed isn't going to max out your hard drive's capabilities if it is waiting for your CPU or GPU to feed it frames to write to the drive.

The write speed isn't going to max out your hard drive's capabilities if it is waiting for your CPU or GPU to feed it frames to write to the drive.

I know but my CPU and GPU aren't that bad either 😅

You know that you have 2 GPU's?
Which drivers are installed for the IGPU and the Nvidia?

What speed is it encoding at. I did a transcode to this prores setting using 1080P 420 8bit AVC source, I get an average of 115fps, I would expect you should get the same or higher (for a transcode) but on a non transcode where you're using various FX, cropping, PIP, masking etc, Vegas can get very slow, and the slowness is not reflected in CPU or GPU... well it probably is if you look for various single core workloads that should be multicore.

The encode produced is 247mbit/s, that = 31MB/s. Vegas is either writing in temporary chunks, or separate audio and video, which it assembles at the end, this is the only time you would expect to see high speed disk activity, for me writing this to a SATA SSD, I see i'm capped at 500MB/s which is most likely a SATA bottleneck

Near the limit of disk speed that you could possibly get while rendering from Vegas Pro is when you have a single uncompressed source file rendered to an uncompressed output file.

Any compressed source and/or render target format will reduce the need for disk throughput as the I/O system is waiting for the decode and encode (CPU/GPU).

Enjoy your fast SSDs and find something else to worry about.

Done the benchmark with the test project and it seems like my setup isn't that bad and that it's the normal performance for Vegas 😅

These are quite good times. Consider submitting your two results and add to the database of knowledge about Vegas performance with different hardware.
