Slowly introduce video effects (such as gamma) over time.

Hello.

I've been wanting to improve my workflow in any general way I can.

The first thing I'd like to improve is slowly introducing effects into a video. I usually edit gameplay videos, so heading into an area that is suddenly a lot darker in the game, I want to increase the gamma or brightness so it's not too dark, but the way I do it right now is just split the clip, then add 'Color Corrector', increase the gamma and then it's done, but it's too sudden. The increase in gamma comes out of nowhere.

I have many of these problems when adding some color correction, I'd like for the effect to slowly become what it's set to, over 5-10 seconds

Thanks for any help!

EDIT: Also, I do the same with audio increase. I'd like for the increase in audio to be more subtle and increase/decrease over time instead of instantly

You need to use keyframes which let you change the settings over time. Please look up keyframes in the Vegas help file or do a search for that word here in the forums.

You can 'Animate' the gamma color correction within the FX, (read the online instructions). And use an 'audio envelope' to adjust the audio over time (select the audio track then the keyboard shortcut 'Shift+V').

Thanks for the keybind, I think I got the system figured out now. Appreciated.

Hey, I've got one more question that I hope you can answer without me having to make an entirely new post. Can I also make certain words in text boxes appear after each other? Right now, if I'm adding text to pop-up the same moment I say the word, I individually add a text box for each word, which results in many layers and poor layout. Can I write a full sentence and then also "Animate" when certain words pop up?

Audio:

If you just want to knock down the occasional 'plosive, you might try a soft limiter on your audio track.

Adjust the Threshold to trim the tops off. You can monitor how much effect it's having by playing the timeline and watching the Reduction (db) meter.

External titler programs are usually better at animating titles than the ones that are built into Vegas Pro.

The Vegas keyframe interface is the "ultimate" way to change fX over time. However, when all you want to do is gradually go from one setting to another, a much faster way which also gives you a lot more control is to cut the event and use crossfades.

1. Cut the event at the point where you want the setting to begin to change.

2. Go to the second of these two events and change the setting to achieve what you want at the point where the change will be finished. You don't need to worry too much about doing this on the exact last frame, as you will see in #3 below.

3. Grab the right edge of the left event and drag it so that event overlaps the second event. The longer the overlap, the longer it will take for the fX (or multiple fX) to change.

I use this quite frequently when it is really important to get the start and/or stop point exact. The keyframe interface has always been marginal, and when you try to adjust things down at a frame level, the keyframes have a habit of being off by at least a frame. They sometimes jump as well, as I found out a year ago when trying to keyframe dozens of side-by-side photos. It was a real nightmare. This technique has none of those problems. It also has the advantage that if you are keyframing half a dozen effects (like when you have multiple color and gamma correction modules applied) you don't have to create keyframes on each fX track (i.e., you don't need to enable "animate").

That's good only for effects which does not change the pictures geometry.

For example, adjusting a gaussian blur radius from zero to 0,3 over time, or crossfading sharp picture with the blurred, will produce completely different looks.

@johnmeyer

Thanks, that's very useful, I did not now this method to avoid keyframes, I'll add it to my experience!
