"Has anybody tried the AVCHD edit for Sony cams yet? I've got a buddy on another board asking if it will import the 5.1 surround from the sony AVCHD's and NOT down mix it to strereo."

to clarify, irrespective of HOW the 5.1 mix is imported (either ac3 from vob or ac3 from cam) vegas will create/have a stereo track.
What u need to do is right click on teh audio and manually select which stream will relate to which track.. ie, stream 1/2 (F/LR), 3/4 (C/LFE), 5/6 (S/LR)
from there you can mute each respective channel as required so there is no bleed through

pretty simple.. had to do it today in fact with a re-edit of a piece recieved as VOB's

Guy's link to Panasonic SD1 AVCHD clips works for me..
http://media.pana3ccduser.com/media/HDC-SD1/Panasonic SD1 clips[/link]

And as Guy said, Vegas just won't accept them.

I don't have an Panasonic AVCHD cam so it doesn't impact me personally, but I am surprised it is not supported. I thought AVCHD was a standard? With HDV it works regardless of if it is a Canon, JVC or Sony cam...

According to this article Panasonic support will come later
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Real-Time-AVCHD-Editing-Is-Here.htmAVCHD article[/link]

" "Panasonic and Sony AVCHD differ slightly," according to Matthew Brohn, Product Manager, Sony Creative Software, Inc. "With such a new technology, we choose to ensure that the Sony AVCHD workflow meets specification as soon as possible." Sony claims support for AVCHD Panasonic camcorders is still in development, but will be available soon.

Well, I guess nothing "stinks" with madison after all.... not their fault the Panny AVCHD is a little different., and Madison SHOULD ensure sony cams work first.

My guess is that if Panny actually put out a NLE, they would support their cams first as well.

Yup, I didn't realize that a public comment was made by someone at Sony. It's interesting that it immediately went to "Something stinks."
Canon, JVC both send camcorder to be tested, just like Sony sends out camcorders to be tested. One surprise I had early last year was walking into the development area at Apple and finding a V1U there, when the only one I'd ever seen was the one seen at the announcement (and that was a mockup) but here Apple had a fully functioning pre-production model.
For whatever reason, the Panasonic product hasn't been made available, AFAIK. Support will be there, but bear in mind that it takes a little more than overnight to develop support for something and Madison have had access to the Sony AVCHD cameras for at least a year.
As mentioned before, no conspiracy. Good find on the article w/Matt.

I, for one, am glad to infer that Madison has been kept a relatively small operation. Things may be a bit slower, but, support remains personalized. Madison hasn't become glaringly Sony - Wisconsin Division.

Cannot confirm that. In my tests, the 5.1 part of the AVCHD files is separated when I have 5.1 project properties - in 4 channels (one for front-left; front right); one LFE; one center; one for back-left and back richt). The channels can be seperated easily further, since front left/right is imported as stereo.

Ok, Madison, I apologize for my accusations and inflammatory remarks. I guess I let my emotions overcome my judgment.

I WANT to HELP. I didn't realize that you couldn't get Panasonic camcorders to test. I will happily overnight my HDC-SD1 to you and pay for shipping both ways if that will help. I believe I can also get an HSC1U owner who lives in Madison to loan you his camcorder so you can test it. No strings. We just want a solution.
