Some curiosity full questions about VEGAS's Future?

iEmby wrote on 11/23/2024, 12:27 PM

Platform Availability

  • Are there any plans to develop a native version of VEGAS Pro for macOS, especially with the rise of ARM64-based Apple Silicon Macs?
  • Are there any discussions about supporting Proton or optimizing VEGAS Pro for use with Wine to improve Linux compatibility?

Feature Enhancements

  • With ProType Titler being deprecated, is the VEGAS Pro team working on a new built-in titling tool that offers similar advanced customization options, such as editing text and titles in depth and customizable animations and typographic precision?

Collaboration and Workflow

  • Will future updates of VEGAS Pro include cloud collaboration tools to allow teams to edit remotely across different platforms?

Future Vision

  • How does VEGAS Pro see itself competing with cross-platform tools like DaVinci Resolve, which already have support for Linux, macOS, and Windows?
  • Are there plans to develop a web-based version of VEGAS Pro or tools for video editing in the browser?

For 1 and 2, highly unlikely as VEGAS was built around Windows components. Native Windows ARM support was announced earlier this year.

For 3 there have been numerous developer statements that it is a priority to replace the (3!) current titlers with a state of the art one. When they'll have resources to work on it is the question.

I completely agree with this comment. Among the points mentioned, the most urgent need—though it already feels a bit overdue—is the overall improvement of VEGAS Pro's text functionality. I sincerely urge the team to address this. It's disheartening that VEGAS Pro, with its rich history and legacy, falls behind even some of the newly emerging software in terms of text-related features. Just imagining these improvements being implemented makes me genuinely excited!

Now if VEGAS is planning to design new titler...

So can we still give improvement suggestions or feature request for existing titler?

Sure you can. But please be aware that it is up to the Magix development team, to

- decide if and when they start with such a development

- also up to them to decide about the concept/design

but they always listen I think.

I have made statements on this before...here are the facts as far as titlers in VEGAS.

  • We are very eager to create a new, state of the art titling solution for VEGAS.
  • Due to corporate restructuring and engineering resource allocation issues, we have been unable to free up the engineers who are experts in this area so they could begin working on this.
  • Management has finally agreed with the engineering team that a new titler needs to be a top priority. So we are hoping that we finally may be able to get started soon on this.
  • We will not make any improvements to the ProType titler. The code for this titler is considered "dead".
  • We may do some minor bug fixes to Titles and Text, but beyond that, it is unlikely that we will make any other changes to it. (Please remember that Titles and Text is based off of the ProType titler engine, encased in an OFX wrapper.)
  • Once we do start work on a new titler, it will take a while for us to get the first version of it ready for public use. We do not expect it to be released for quite some time.

I completely understand. Unfortunately, my hands are tied right now. If you ask Gary, he will tell you that this has been on the top of my personal feature wishlist for almost 10 years.

iEmby wrote on 11/26/2024, 9:24 PM

almost 10 years.

@VEGASDerek and that’s a really long time. Honestly, it’s a bit scary because, in 10 years, an entirely new and powerful software could be built—not just a single feature.

The only question that keeps coming to mind is: Why?

this has been on the top of my personal feature wishlist for almost 10 years.

it seems like it has been at the bottom of someone else's priority list! 😅

That said, I’d like to share some thoughts with the developers.

We, as users, don’t know how much time it takes to create something as big as a new titler, but at the very least, you could fix bugs and add small yet essential features to the current Text & Titles.

For example, something as simple as changing the color of individual letters, words, or lines.

Right now, we can’t do that, and we’re forced to use multiple layers, masking, or video effects to achieve the desired look—or have to use ProType Titler which is little freezy.

For advanced animations or more complex work, we’re happy to use the ProType Titler and dedicate extra time to it.

But basic features like the ability to style text elements independently would be a huge improvement and save so much time.

I hope you can understand my perspective and consider these ideas.

Thanks for listening us in every mood..

It is reassuring to know that they are aware of this, but it is unfortunate that they did not respond in advance even though they knew that the prototype titler or title en text code was dead. This is because the text function is not an AI function or a new technology, but a basic function of editing software. Even among third-party programs, it is a new program that is not old. The text function is also improving amazingly. The same goes for Premiere, which is already old. Vegas Pro lacks many basic functions, including font application. But I will wait. Today, I am satisfied that the developers are aware of this problem.

Based on that, you'll likely get a reasonable amount of use out of TP7 in the short to hopefully the not too long medium term.

The only question that keeps coming to mind is: Why?

Well, 11 years ago, VEGAS was mothballed by Sony.

Eight years ago, it was resurrected by Magix.

We had only 4 engineers for the first few years, none of which were equipped to develop a titler...and we had some significant other things we had to do...like revive a dead codebase.

Over the last few years, since we added a few engineers who had the skills to do this, the company has been in a state of flux, and we have had to shuffle resources all over to compensate for the loss of key personnel throughout the Magix organization. Management has also had other priorities (some good ones, some which were a complete waste of time) and they shifted the engineering resources to those other initiatives.

I honestly believe we have turned the corner. The ownership/funding situation with Magix will hopefully be settled soon (finally!!!) and we believe we will have a management structure that will make good decisions for VEGAS. Through it all, while we have lost some engineers on the VEGAS team due to business reasons, no engineers on this team have actually quit during all of the chaos of Magix's restructuring when it would have been very easy for them to abandon VEGAS for greener pastures. That should tell you the commitment our team has to move VEGAS forward.

I think it is fair enough, what Derek states here. We have to accept that the development of Vegas was an up and down, what is nobodies fault. We have to appreciate that that the development of Vegas is an ongoing process, at the core with the renewal of the business engine. What is most important, since it affects ALL users - even if I really are aware of the fact, that the development of a new titler is important too.

And we have to understand that the development capacities are limited too. Not everything, what I would wish, may happen, and my wishes for Vegas may be different again to the desires of other users. Maybe.

I honestly believe we have turned the corner. The ownership/funding situation with Magix will hopefully be settled soon (finally!!!) and we believe we will have a management structure that will make good decisions for VEGAS. Major kudos to the engineering team for sticking around through thick and thin. Getting a glimpse behind the scenes at the troubles they've faced, and the often disheartening criticisms they've gotten from the public while trying to do the nearly impossible with nowhere near enough resources... the fact that you're all still here is nothing short of amazing. Those that stuck around and put in the good work deserve a round of applause and cold beers (or the tasty beverage of their choice) for that.

I have the gut feeling that VEGAS as a whole is about to turn a big corner and start making some waves. When I saw how powerful the AI assistant was, and what it had the potential to become, it left my head buzzing with ideas (as Gary will tell you, lol, I sent many his way). Ideas that held the potential to open entirely new markets for you guys, in areas like newsrooms, where VEGAS has been long-ignored. As long as you guys can keep bringing that kind of innovation to the table before anyone else, and keep improving what has always been an already amazing app so that it can keep up with the competition as far as performance and stability go, even the giants won't be able to take you down. You'll have them playing catch-up. Still to this day, nobody else has even come close to matching VEGAS' workflow. It's just so efficient and smooth. The only thing that held is back was that old codebase. Now that's changing, and you'll start reaping the rewards from that soon.
