Stabilization - Vegas Pro vs Movie Studio

RayC76 wrote on 1/17/2021, 5:37 PM

Currently have Movie Studio 17. Wondering about upgrading to Vegas Pro. Does anyone know if the Video Stabilization feature in the Vegas Pro are a whole lot better than what's comes with Movie Studio. Also, if there's a big learning curve, if one makes the switch from Movie Studio to Vegas Pro.

Thank you - any comments and/or suggestions welcome!

Yeah, the stabilization in Vegas Pro is a bit better than what comes with the Studio versions. But personally i just invest in the best option there is, which is the Prodad Mercalli Plugin.

There's not much learning curve in my experience, though I made the switch about 8 years ago. I wanted multicam, more tracks, etc.

Ok - so there's an optional plugin. Does this work with Movie Studio and/or Vegas Pro? Thank you!

Minimizing my learning curve is a plus :-). I'm assuming that you've been very pleased with Vegas Pro. Good to know. Thank you.

Mercalli appears to work for all of them link

You might give the existing Vegas Pro stabilizer a try- except for lacking a CMOS rolling shutter fix it can work well. I have no idea about Movie Studio.

Yes, I've been pleased enough with Vegas Pro to stick with it. I went from 12 to 15 and am now on 18. As I learn more, I uncover more of what the software is capable of. It's quite deep.

Mercalli plugin works also in Vegas Movie Studio and gives much better results than the Vegas stabilizer. Disadvantage the plugin is real expensive and not suitable for stabilizing interlaced footage directly in VegasPro/VMS. But there's a good workaround for interlaced.

I've used the Vegas stabilizer for minor stabilization. It works great for me.

Here is a video comparing Mercalli with Vegas stabilizer.

The stabilization of the vegas 18 pro is very poor. Install the free DaVinci Rosolve program and the stabilization works great and for free there.

Reyfox wrote on 1/18/2021, 5:06 AM

@Lukasz did you watch the video? Saying it's poor without giving an example doesn't help. It might be in the situation(s) you used it. But I found it pretty good when I used in a few videos. Mind you, I only needed minor stabilization.

Thanks for that video, it's a good comparison and shows the strengths of both stabilizers. I have also found Vegas useful for mild stabilization, too.

No, its on par with Davinci Resolve. The only diff, Davinci get the first analyze very well in most of the time. VEGAS Pro, you may need to subclip the media in order to force the plugin analyze only that portion of the video, and the result is sometimes better then davinci

I'm 90% satisfied with the stabilizer in Vegas Pro 18 too. (Cutting away the strongest stuttering first is a must)
I stabilize the rest with ReSpeedR from ProDad, (where CMOS rolling shutter fix is also built in). This saves me another 5%, the remaining 5% goes in the bin.

Yes, the Mercalli plugin isn't cheap. However, I'm particularly interested in stabilization because I shot some footage recently - walking around - and it's very shaky. I want to make this more "usable". Now that I know that the Mercalli plugin works with Movie Studio, I may give that combination a try first - Movie Studio And Mercalli Plugin. I have Movie Studio so all I have to get is the Plugin. I went on their website all the offering seems overwhelming so I will study them first and see where I go from there. I'm happy to see that I can download a trial to test. Thank you.

3POINT wrote on 1/18/2021, 12:39 PM

Yes, the trial is fully functional and has no time restrictions. It gives only a small Prodad logo in the rendered output. It will give you a good overview of the capabilities of Mercalli before you decide if it's worth the money.

I just look looked at downloading the Plugin. It seems that there's one for Movie Studio and one for Vegas Pro. Darn - I thought it would be one. Thinking if I got it for Movie Studio than I could use it also for Vegas Pro. Looks like there are unique versions for each. Guess I'll try it for Movie Studio and then go from there. Thank you.

That would be new. I'm using Mercalli4 plugin, that was included with Vpro14, in Vpro18 as well as in VMS17.

I would just write an email - this company is extremely cooperative - if that's what you think you can ask for a special price.

Hmm, I downloaded the PlugIn for Magix, and ran the "exe". However, when I go to Movie Studio 17, I don't see the ProDad or Mercalli Plugin. I'm wondering if I need to download the "Vegas" Plugin. Any idea? It's also possible, I'm blind. Thank you.

Well I may ask later after I figure out where the Plugin is on my computer. Thank you.

I don't know if there are different installation routines for the plugin for Vegaspro or VMS. As suggested, contact Prodad directly and ask. Their Website says it's suitable for all products of Magix, including Movie Studio.
