[SUGGESTION] VEGAS Pro for Linux distros

Former user wrote on 9/13/2018, 11:49 AM

Hi VEGAS team and users,

At the beginning must say that I use VEGAS software since 2011. Can say - it is one of the best and most intuitive NLE made. In 2016, when MAGIX bought vegas alongisde other Sony Creative Software products, better times happened and happens to this day.

You wrote that you listen to the community suggestions and yes, we can see that. Bugs are being fixed, new features are included. My suggestion and question at the same time is: Is there a chance for VEGAS to be released on Linux distros?

A few days ago Valve released Steam Play for this "platform" and yes, it works. Day after day it getting better.

Thank your for your attention,

Matt

[Techno-Philosophical-Rhetorical Poser]

1) Ask yourself how many of the Vegas Pro programmers do you think are fluent in Linux.

2) Would the additional revenue from the community that prefers Linux for video editing pay for the programming effort to port Vegas Pro or completely re-write it?

3) If expansion into other Operating Systems is the key to financial success for Magix, how about IOS?

Now that I've given you something to think about in your spare time, I'll go back to my work and let the Vegas Pro Product Manager worry about his crisis of the day.

Hallo,

it would be wonderful if Vegas Pro would run on Linux. I too have been working with Vegas for many years, it is a very good program. But I don't want to be spied on by Microsoft. That's why I switched to Linux a few weeks ago. And the only thing I have not yet managed to find a replacement for Vegas. Very sad.
I'm sure many would enthusiastically use Vegas if it ran on Linux.

After all this years vegas team never made mac version even though its the 2nd most popular desktop os in the world so forget about Linux man

Mac and Linux do not have the .NET libraries. I know the scripting engine is heavily tied to .NET. Seems it would be extremely difficult to port to another OS given the Windows dependencies.

I almost got it working on 17 minus the activation. I'm still looking into a way to make the best editor, run on wine... As a linux user I'm known to not give up.😩 Also It's not like I have anything better to do with my time

VEGAS depends heavily on Windows features to work, so porting it to another OS, as Ian mentions, would require completely rewriting it from the ground-up. Unfortunately, from a financial perspective, the number of sales they could get from releasing a Linux version would not justify the cost they would have to spend to re-develop it for Linux... and the same is likely true for MacOS.

@fr0sty
Rewriting Vegas from scratch would most likely lose the 'Vegas' Feeling. + While It's unnecessary since windows can run in linux, It's a wish. Because you need to cut down your cpu power by half when using a VM.

VEGAS is STILL in my eyes the best editor in the world. so I'd be gutted to have to relearn and abandon that 'Vegas' editing Feeling that was my creative drive and made me do 18 videos in it in a mere 1 year. I love the feel of editing and keyboard shortcuts. I Feel sorry for moving away from windows to a better operating system... but Windows became too much of a drag. So while i don't need a Linux version I'd really wish they saw the light.
But noone will force it.

Just like Adobe will charge you for Dreamweaver, but will not offer the latest version of php. XD

Why not do a Windows/Linux dual boot system?

Why not do a Windows/Linux dual boot system?

I do not want Recall on my machine recording everything I do (and Micro$oft has already made it clear that it cannot be removed, and how can I trust Microsoft that it can be deactivated? A lot of these companies have shown that the deactivation button is just a placebo, as Apple was recently caught listening to people who don't even use Siri and never invoked it). And frankly put, I do not want ads on my start menu or programs installed without my consent.

That said, Magix doesn't need to outright write a new Linux native version. Getting Vegas to work with Wine is more than enough to satisfy me. Right now trying to install Vegas on Wine causes Wine to throw error messages about unimplemented features. If Magix could get Vegas working with Wine (either by working together with the Wine developers or working towards Wine support internally), I'd upgrade to the next version that supports Wine immediately. Right now I'm using Vegas 19 and I'm still on the fence about upgrading to Vegas 21 via Humble Bundle, let alone Vegas 22, as I'm ready to dump Windows.

I live in Asia. As far as I know we get a different version of Windows compared to Europe (non-N version, same version as the US). And as far as I know, for the Non-N version of Windows you cannot remove what microsoft doesn't want you to remove- you're going to have Recall, you are going to get spied on, and you will accept it.
