Survey - How many use Media Manager?

Comments

Adobe extracted their file browser out of PhotoShop, beefed it up and made a standalone Adobe Bridge, with media management and previewing features. It is really integrated with their apps. Maybe Sony should do something like this for Media Manager.

A 6 - 1 margin against. And I'm another one in the NO column. I've never been able to install it. Seems to me if Sony wanted people to use it, it wouldn't be a PITA. I have a personal policy against using software the PITA catagory.

I'm very worried about my favorite NLE. Let's see what v.7 brings...

Er... I'm not actually using V6 either, but I'm Acid 5 and 6 user and first tried to organize all my loops (approx. 20 000+ pieces) but the app seems so a-w-k-w-a-r-d .... sigh ....

So, not planning to use it with V7 either, which I'm planning to aquire immediately when its released (my HDV-material is accumulating fast).

I haven't given it a chance but I find Adobe Bridge very approachable and mostly intuitive. Can't same same yet about MM. I would like to see Vegas add well thought out (or as John said - elegant) work flow through MM. I would especially like for it to manage the movement of projects offline AND track where a specific piece of media is stored, and what project(s) it was used in.

Ditto for me on johnmeyer's comments.

I experienced several crashes with Media Manager when I first started using it and had to disable it. I also noticed, like johnmeyer, that it's a hog... its bigger than all the other Sony apps put together. I don't know for sure if it was developed by a third party or not, but if it wasn't, it certainly seems sub-par for the usual quality of software designed by the Madison team.

But I also agree with Grazie: I don't want to see Media Manager go away. I just want to see it get better, leaner, and less buggy. I have all the confidence in the world that the Madison team is capable of doing much better.

No, I don't use it either. I also thought everyone else used it. I don't seem to have a problem "managing my media".

I organize my projects with a project directory (folder) tree and subdirectories underneath. Many times I reuse clips from other projects and I just copy them to the new project tree. Slightly wasteful but that's how I organize the project. I audition the clips with the explorer.

Never say never. I'm probably not aware of all the MM capabilities, so a standalone tutorial video might be helpful

I've plugged away at it a bit - but have not sat down and really gotten into it. My workflow seems more media bins-ish. I should really spend some time on MM....

My workflow is too simple. I have never tried using media manager.

tried a few times and it crashed for me also. That was awhile back and I was using WinxP SP1 I am now on SP2 but have not bothered to try it. I have had better luck with it in ACID Pro .

What's Media Manager :)

I've never seen the need for it, given my work methods and needs. The fact that it appears to be such a massive install scares me--okay, it's a database sort of program; why is it so large?

Wow, I've been racked with guilt all this time for not getting around to using it. Flabbergasted by the results and I feel better now :)

Actually I am one of those that probably really could benefit from it. I have an archive of about 10,000 AVI clips covering about 1000 marine life species from around 200 dive sites. I need them all categorised by species and dive site (at the minimum). For the time being I keep them in individually-named folders and I add an abbreviation for the dive site at the beginning of the clip itself. eg. d:\anglerfish-painted-Antennarius pictus\DONanglerfish-painted1a.avi Maybe MM can really help me.

I have "replaced" Windows Explorer with Directory Opus. It takes some setting up but it's excellent for things like synchronising data across drives.

To me, the point of media management is to help me save time. However, you have to sink so much time into media manager (learning it, tagging clips) that I don't think it would save me time. I don't get it, which means a steep learning curve. And the tagging clips aspect seems to be excessive button pushing to me.

What I want:
--When I log and capture tapes, I should be able to log clips easily. Being able to log clips on the fly would be awesome. Or, I just start the capture and let DV scene start/stop detection do its thing. Then I go in and log footage, off of the captured footage.

--When I log footage, I only want to type in a single line of description. Anything else is too complicated or takes ridiculous amounts of button pushing.
For example:
The capture utility will break footage up into clips based on scene detection.

I type a description for the current clip, and hit enter.

If it's a long interview, I want to drop a marker. I now type the description for the marker, hit enter. i.e. I am interviewing the prime minister, I break the interview up by question or by topic (i.e. views on health care, views on relationships with interns, choking on pretzels, etc.).

Scene detection finds a new clip. Once I hit enter, I now edit the description for this latest clip.

I keep adding markers, so on and so forth.

Auxiliary information may be useful. For example, the capture utility could have a "scene" and "take" field. Takes automatically increment on every new clip. There should be buttons for indicating two takes within a clip, or incrementing/decrementing the take.
A "new scene" button will increment the scene, and set take to 1.

Maybe there should also be a field for the type of shot...
b-roll / not b-roll
establishing shot
interview
user-defined fields

This will allow me to search only through b-roll, ESs, etc. There could be 10 buttons to tag clips like this, and you use the mouse to click this button to tag the clip. This is not entirely necessary though.

--In Vegas, there should be some search utility for me to search through the descriptions for events AND markers AND regions, and ideally text generators too. Instead of tagging, a keyword search would make more sense.

There should be an easy method to limit searches (i.e. not search regions, only search video, only search b-roll, etc.).

Certain search features may also be useful... i.e. finding similar words, in case you accidentally have a spelling mistake.

Way too much overhead for such a simple function. And certainly not worth a SQL .NET install that conflicts with other .NET applications.

We need more impassioned users like Grazie and Serena to post to help even out the count a bit. This is most probably a case of the gripers being more driven to post than the folks who are happy with it. But even still, these results are pretty telling.

I would very much like to see Madison unbundle the media manager and have it as a separate, free download. It does get a bit irksome that it is downloaded and installed again with every update. If nothing else, they could probably save a few dozen GB a day on their download bandwidth.

I'll chime in with a yes, with a couple of notes one being I have not used it recently.
First of all J.R.'s VASST DVD helped me get a much better handle on how it works and how to use it. It DID help my work flow.
However the fragilty of the data base ie crashes and the possibilty of the unintentional/acidental hit of one keystroke completly wiping out data that cannot be undone or recovered. (see post)"http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?Forum=4&MessageID=465662"
Has made me shy away from using it as of late.
Also the lack if integration between clip - comments/tags etc between media manager and say the project bin means you have that info in only one place , if you want it in both you must retype it all in the other .

So I like it but as Grazie and other have said "needs improvement"
