System based context windows do not show when using high DPI scaling

patrick-keough wrote on 9/5/2018, 8:40 AM

I did a bit of searching and found quite a few threads with people complaining about fuzziness on DPI scaling. I have a different problem and forgive me if it has already been posted.

I have 2 24" 4k displays. If I activate any level of DPI scaling in windows for the monitor that holds the main windows for Vegas 15 or 16, no system generated context windows will display. By that I mean the progress window when rendering or the offset window when applying the text to motion tracking script etc. I can hit ESC to back out but that is it.

As I mentioned it happens with 15 and 16. I haven't tried any of the earlier versions. This is windows 10 on an NVIDIA GTX 1080.

Has anyone else come across this issue?

I guess it is just my system.

Vegas 15 has not a High DPI option. Vegas Pro 16 has, did you try it?

Yeah, I tried that. Everything about the scaling is fine except certain message and input boxes not being drawn on the screen with or without high dpi mode checked.. Well, the clipped context menus are annoying but not the end of the world.

Thank you for the reply though! I forgot to mention I had tried that.

Based on the difficulty that I’m having reading the text on my 24” 1920x1200 display, I doubt that many people are buying 24” UHD displays.

Disclaimer

I’m over 30.

OK... That is the idea behind DPI scaling though. I am over 40, I don't want to run at 100%, I would like say 150% or so but it doesn't really matter. It is a glitch. I am just trying to find out if it is a glitch specific to my system or not. I don't have anything else to test on. Right now I am running at 100% and it is ROUGH even with great eyesight.

Thank you for the input though.

Don't see this problem either. Have you tried the Windows 10 High DPI override settings for the application .exe file properties? That has solved other problems (e.g., Vegas showing only half the external monitor.)

Yes, I tried with and without the win 10 over ride. That is how I am running right now actually, with the over ride on for Vegas so my other programs can still scale. The way things go, it is probably something only I have run in to.

I keep everything in default on my 32 Benq 4k 10 bit monitor. Everything is looking perfect for me. Don't know about 24' or any other sizes.

Yeah, at 32" I would not want to scale at all either I think.

As I put the scaling back on and started messing around. It seems it is just the input box when I select the script "Add text to motion track". I could have sworn there was another thing that did it but well, so far I can't find it. I will just live with not having that script work while using display scaling. Not the end of the world.

I think there is some sort of weird interaction where the high DPI experience changes over time with re-boots, etc. It is almost like windows "learns" what to do. Strange.

So did you set the widows dpi override to "scaling performed by" = application?

FYI, I have 32" and 40" UHD monitors now set at 125%. No problems; Vegas (14 or 16) looks great.

Yeah, I set it to by application on the shortcut so vegas would ignore the scaling while the other applications would scale fine. Since it is apparently just that one script dialogue box I am back to 150% scaling on everything. Good enough. I don't foresee many times when I will use motion tracking to anchor text.

That's good to know... One day perhaps. I think I would need a bigger desk at that point...

I had similar behaviour + also some icons not showing with Windows 10 scaling set @ 150%. I work on a 34" Wide 3,440 * 1,440 display & had all the relevant Windows 10 and Vegas Pro 16 settings activated/set correctly to accommodate my high DPI display.

Once I set the scaling to 149% (or lower) all is good and works perfectly. I tried many different permutations of all the settings, but the only one that worked for me is to set the scaling @ 149% or lower.

This was not the same in Vegas Pro 15 and might be related to the introduction in Vegas 16 of the "Use High DPI scaling"-setting, that introduced some unforeseen behaviour/glitch?

@balazer also reported this sometime last year. Worth a try.
