Testing the new Vegas 16 Stabilisation.

j-v wrote on 8/27/2018, 12:14 PM

Probably I'm doing something wrong, but what is it?
Testing the new stabilizer gives me no "significantly improved" results.
Today I tried a lot and I have studied very good the introduction video on the website.

So in the end I did a test with the Pro 15 stabilizer, the new one of Vegas 16 and Mercalli 4.
All settings in every test were with default settings.
Maybe I'm overlooking something?

Here is the comparison

While in some cases I encountered something similar, in the video you posted above the VP16 result even looks better than Mercalli.

That said, beware the FX presets offered describe the result. So "Fast Camera" would still look like a fast moved camera with only slight stabilization and "Static" will apply a rather extreme stabilization. Best is to select a preset first, then further adjust the settings to avoid overwriting settings. I prefer "Similarity" in most cases as compensation type and a precise tracking instead of a fast.

I had the preset "moderate movement" and the others as you descibed.

Will try the static preset. 👍

Marco, thanks for this "static" indication.
Stabilizing now is much better, but I had also to change the Correction setting for zoom between 0.100 - 0.200 to avoid nasty borders on both sides, but this is now the result

Does anyone know whether the V16 stabilization works properly with 360 video?

Never tested. If it wouldn't, there's the option of applying stabilization to a subclip made after the stitching FX was applied.

Unfortunately I have to admit that the old plugin besides giving better results was much more practical.

I shoot a lot of handheld video using Panasonic cameras and stabilized lenses. But at 69 I am not as steady as I once was. So this morning I've spent about an hour working with 4K video in both V16 and Mercalli PRO 4.0. Lets be reasonable here , were are comparing a $250 special purpose program with one part of a generalized program. I see great improvement using the right settings (wish there was a specific long video on how to maximize each setting) in the new stabilization of V16. It works I'd say rated 8.0 compared to Merc 4.0 being a 10. It going to take some experimentation but the new stabilization appears to be a useful addition compared to the old one that just plain didn't work. The issue is always trying to find the optimum settings and to take the time to learn them. However for the shot that is the money shot and you have to fix it to where is can be used IMHO nothing works like Merc 4.0, again once you learn it.

I my sound like a fan boy and my lively hood does not depend on any software now and I'd still like Drag and Drop not to take 10 or 15 seconds or sometimes crash my system, but I've found that once you have muscle memory and a long learning curve accumulated like CSN & Y said 'love the one your with' and so I welcome each and every new improvement, especdially now that VP gets use updates throughout a 18/24 month before new release.

No, I do not think so. That stabilizer "shifts" (,rotate and zoom) frames to archieve smooth results. In 360° videos we are only allow to rotate frames around the 3 axis to order to not destroy the panoramic view.

Former user wrote on 8/29/2018, 2:39 AM

Maybe you try cyberlink power director ultimate for 360° stabilisation. Download trial. It's cheap and cheerful software that doesn't crash all the time and does a good job at 360° stabilisation & being a basic editor

Soundivad wrote on 8/29/2018, 3:43 AM

at a first glance I'am not that impressed with the new, highly anticipated "industrial leading" stabilisation....
I was expecting a bit better results.... in results and preview fluidity
I will test it in more detail... but IMOO mercalli still rules by far.

This is my test. If some object in the footage is moving, then Vegas 16 stabilisation is not working well ...

What is the stabilization program that says WARP?

OldaC wrote on 8/31/2018, 12:53 AM

Warp stabilizer from AfterEffects.

FYI,

I am getting decent results from the new stabilizer, but seems to be resetting the zoom level to zero every time I close the project. Anyone else seeing this?

yes, that's a bug. i have that too, on my desktop and laptop. at least 2 other people confirmed to have the same issue. I bet everyone is having it, just not everyone noticed it yet.

Kinvermark wrote on 8/31/2018, 2:23 AM

Thx!

Kinvermark wrote on 8/31/2018, 4:07 PM

@VEGASPascal

Also, the syc-cursor is inoperative (greyed-out) so it is not practical (impossible?) to keyframe the horizon correction.

Ok, thanks.

Will be fixed in update 2.

From the release notes for VP16 Update 2 (build 307):

"The stabilization tool's Zoom parameter now properly persists through project save, close, and reload"

konstantinos-sokolas wrote on 11/22/2018, 11:59 AM

The Video Stabilization feature won't work at any setting for me now in Vegas Pro 16, after the latest update. Just useless...

Antonio-Souto wrote on 11/28/2018, 6:17 PM

I am also disappointed. The quality is really not good. You get far better results with Mercalli 4. Hope they fix it.
