You can have multiple tracks easily but there is only one "timeline" per project file.

You can nest project files within other project files though which may be as close as you can get

System 1:

Windows 10
i9-10850K 10 Core
128.0G RAM
Nvidia RTX 3060 Studio driver [most likely latest]
Resolution        3840 x 2160 x 60 hertz
Video Memory 12G GDDR5

System 2:

Lenovo Yoga 720
Core i7-7700 2.8Ghz quad core, 8 logical
16G ram
Intel HD 630 gpu 1G vram
Nvidia GTX 1050 gpu 2G vram

For multiple timelines I use multiple instances of Vegas. Works for me.

It has been request for long time yet Vegas still does not support multiple timelines.

as the guys mentioned above the best workaround is to use nested projects or multiple instances of Vegas which both are not ideal and does not give you the flexibility and convince of multiple timelines like in other NLEs such as Resolve and Premiere.

May be we can expect this feature in their next update, this will surely make this NLE one of the best.

Maybe the multiple timeline can be exported as VEG file when needed making VEGAS more unique then other NLE. the current concept is pretty cumbersome & sluggish, which can lead to instability of the software itself

Excuse my ignorance but when would you use multiple timelines?

For me personally, it is a HUUUUUUGE time saver when working between different drafts on Premiere.

Also, there's a certain magic of having two separate timelines on top of each and being able to switch clips between them while looking at the result in the external screen.

Having said that, I think VEGAS does not need multiple timelines. I think what they can do is just expand on its ability to group tracks.

In my workflow, I create the first draft. Duplicate all the tracks and group the original one as "Draft One" then turn it off and carry on with draft 2.

However, if I repeat this step too many times, I do notice a performance drop, even if the tracks are turned off.

Years ago I worked with Premiere once and I also found the multipe timelines very good and clear, but now I get along very well with the Vegas Pro concept.

I also think that having multiple timelines always active becomes a performance problem.
If you open several instances, and the setting "Close media files when the application is not active", I suspect that it is more resource-efficient.
One would have to check, but maybe @EricLNZ can tell us more precisely.

You are wrong my friend because multiple timelines are far more efficient than running multiple instances of the same software which naturally takes more system resources and negatively affect the performance. I did a test long time ago with Resolve and Premiere using 3 timelines in each and the performance was way better than single timeline in Vegas. Resolve and Premiere managed to playback all timelines at 50P while Vegas maximum frame rate did not reach 25P if I remember correctly. The footages used was all 2K ProRes 4444.

1 project, multiple alternate cut point. Also changing between sequence is instant, because its another tab of TL.

You can also do Pancake editing with multiple timeline, quickly copy paste/reference between top/bottom timeline. Pancake editing used alot in TVC editing

@walter-i. the answer is very simple coz i learned vegas before the others so I know how to cut with it faster. but I might switch one day, who knows. This is not to say the others are perfect they still have many disadvantages but their playback performance are superior when compared to vegas and they crash far far less frequently than vegas. i hope vegas one day will be as solid as the others and by then i will not look back as nothing compares to vegas in term of ease of use.
