I know. The price sounds like it is used but it is listed as CONDITION: NEW .. I ordered two. If they aren't new .. back they go. I'll see about warranty and born on dates when they arrive. If not good, I'll send them back to Amazon. Generally I have no problem with returns to Amazon.
Seems about right. Check out NCIX for price comparison. They are my local go-to for pc parts and generally have very competitive prices even though we are in Canada (which normally means we get **(*(&(*&(*&! prices.)
Something going on with this Western Digital Model WD3003FZEX .. It's discontinued or out of stock many places (including NCIX), even at Western Digital itself where they have 1TB, 4TB, 5TB and 6TB but no 2TB or 3TB Black, as if they don't make them any more. ???
Price at Amazon is now back to $179.95 .. I paid $159.95 a few months ago and am very happy with that drive for video editing. Got two more earlier today for $103 + shipping from an Amazon seller, UnbeatableSale. The price seemed way too low. But I went for it with plans to test them rigorously before using them on a project.
I wasn't so sure I wanted that big a drive, 3TB. But I remember not wanting a 1TB drive for the same reason. 3TB sounds like a lot to risk losing if a single drive fails. The answer of course is to stay backed up.
Seems like in the future, drives will continue to get bigger and video files will also likely be getting bigger requiring faster CPU's and more and more disc space. When has it ever been otherwise.
Been running 2 x Western Digital Black 4TB drives in an Intel IRST "fake" RAID 0 as my media drive for a couple of years now and very happy indeed with my choice. RAID 0 might seem a bit rash but I backup after significant changes to the content of the drive.
I am exclusively using SSD drives on my computer system. Spinner drives are for backups only. I would NEVER go back to spinner drives for editing work!
As a side note: I am using Word to spell check my sloppy typing. There is one built into Chrome but this site does not allow it to work here. :(
With 4 TB going what are you backing up to? .. Green? Red? Blue? Black?
I have 3 x Seagate Backup Plus Fast 4TB drives and I use one when as my primary media drive with my laptop when I'm away on dive trips. But actually they haven't been very reliable. I have returned one and then later returned its replacement for failures.

But gets very pricey for large sizes. Of course, that is changing fast. I am waiting for 2TB SSDs to get a bit cheaper and then intending to get one to move between my desktop and laptop as my "Documents" drive. No more last-minute syncing, which usually kills me just before a trip.
VIdMus ... I"m assuming your real world experience has debunked the general wisdom that SSD's for video editing don't give you enough extra zip for the money. Whose are you using? How big?
Nick .. I'm using Toshiba Canvio Connect ii for backup .. Not as fast as your Seagate but so far I've never had one go bad. I've also used these drives as media drives with my laptop and done lots of editing this way using V12 and V13. I've had people mail me these drives too (well packed in the original box) -- never had a problem. In fact, I've dropped a few of them and they even survived that.
Now that WD My Passport Ultra 4TB are available I'll probably switch to those rather than the Seagate for travel and backup. I'm reading 5Gb/s (Max) for the WD vs 220MB/s (Max) for the Seagate. Seems like that might not be a like-for-like comparison!

In my experience, SSD drives only make a difference in Vegas when building peaks (audio waveforms). There I see about 14% faster performance building peaks from my Canon 50Mb/s MXF files. All other activities seem to be about the same.
