Trouble importing media greater than 1080 that is from DJI pocket 3

Patrick-Langan wrote on 12/27/2023, 12:33 PM

When I add a clip in 1080p vertical  it imports fine. But when 2K or more In vertical format, Vegas imports  as distorted horizontal. Now I can solve it by unclicking “maintain aspect ratio”.   Still it takes time to bring it into the timeline (5 mintues).  It has to process the clips.  The camera model is he DJI pocket 3. Vegas is version 21, build 187

What am I doing wrong?

Here no problem with normal 4K clips from my DJI pocket.
You are not using the latest Vegas 21 build 208 with a lot of fixes.
Are you able to give here the MediaInfo of the clips with and without your problem following this instruction?

What are your opinions on the DJI Pocket 3? I am about to purchase it. Is it good enough for family videos? I know its mainly a vlogging camera, which I do not do. I just do family videos filmed on my Galaxy S23 Ultra, and edit in Vegas 21. I sold my Sony AX 700. It just was to big to haul around. The pocket 3 has a 1 inch CMOS sensor. The AX 700 has a 1 inch stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor. To tell you the truth I do not know the difference between the two sensor sizes? The AX 700 also did not shoot in 4K 60fps. When I imported clips in 4k to Vegas in 30fps from the AX 700 and used slow motion it had terrible ghosting effects from moving people or objects. I see the Pocket 3 films in 4K 120FPS in slow motion. All of the reviews I have watched are great. People use it for vacations, the videos look great. And supposedly shoots really well in low light?

Thanks for any feedback.

I got one a few days ago. I am pleased. I am just trying to solve the problem mentioned above when I import a file bigger than 1080 into Vegas

Did you try a 4k .264 file from your pocket 3. Is your computer fast enough for a HEVC 10 bit file? Film in 4k with .264 MP 4 see if Vegas opens that.

Maybe this is a bug. Could you upload a few seconds to a file on google drive and we can see if we have the same problem on our systems? If everyone has it it's easy to report to VEGAS.

Thanks for the MediaInfo of a file, but to compare I asked for the MediaInfo of a working file and from a not working file

We never got a file or MediaInfo to see if it can be replicated.

RogerS, thanks for response. I found the solution in another post here on the forum. To solve the "distortion" from DJI Pocket 3 portrait (vertical) media, change the media aspect ratio from 3.1605 to 1.0000. Issue solved!

Rich, you say Media Aspect Ratio. Help me understand what this is. Is it the the pixel aspect ratio in project properties (video tab)?

Patrick, right click on the Pocket 3 media, select Properties, see my screenshot. Change to 1.000.

Rich, I am getting closer. I found where your screenshot is. Here is still a problem to solve. If I understand you properly that is once you import the video into the timeline. Here is the problem is I important say 10 clips it takes maybe then it take time, maybe 5 minutes or so for them to complete the import. What can I do?

RogerS wrote on 3/3/2024, 6:58 PM

Is the slow import time because they are creating proxy files? Look at the bottom left of the window and hit cancel if that's the issue.

Patrick-Langan wrote on 3/3/2024, 7:21 PM

Thank you for all your help

Rich Parry wrote on 3/4/2024, 11:53 AM

If proxies are being "automatically" generated, then you must have that option set. Go to Options/Preferences/Video and turn OFF "Automatically create video proxies for greater than 4K resolution media"

Rich, I am getting closer to the solution. Now another question. You said, "RogerS, thanks for response. I found the solution in another post here on the forum. To solve the "distortion" from DJI Pocket 3 portrait (vertical) media, change the media aspect ratio from 3.1605 to 1.0000. Issue solved!" What would the ratio be if I want a square video (ratio 1:1)

Patrick-Langan wrote on 3/8/2024, 5:10 PM

One more thing, Rich. Now I have all the clips on the timeline and I can go one by one changing the  pixel aspect ratio ...and that is doable. Is there a way to change them all at once. I tried copy and paste properties but it did not work.

You need to use a script to change everything already on the timeline.

Pixel aspect ratio is different than video aspect ratio I think. Square pixels are normal these days. Media aspect ratios can vary.
