TWO DVD made one good one bad

GLADDEN wrote on 9/23/2009, 6:34 PM
Hello .. I have been learning from my new frends,,, thank you... I got my buttons to be white and most of the pink out of the edit in VEGAS and made two DVDs. One on the PC and one on the laptop... The pc DVD is not very good,,, poor quality and hairingbone in the highlights and lines like the brick on the walls. The DVD made with the laptop is BEAUTIFUL.. GREAT... I have spent hours comparing the two PC to Laptop... Thought I would find something diffrent.. Everything is the same... The DVD is sharper.. There is no FX sharping .. I used the same FX on the pc and the laptop. Could i have imported the video from Sony PMB diffrently.. The only thing I can think off... that could I have done diffrenty ...

I have been checking to see why the DVD done on the laptop is great and the DVD done on the PC is so bad... You can even see it in the preview in a small window.. Looking at the meida bins in Vegas. Click on them and they look fine! Also... If I render out a short test with NONE in the interlace the hairingbone is gone.. One fellow on the forum said to set the interlace to NONE,,, I belive... Then WHY is the PC dvd so bad and the laptop DVD so good.. I can not fine anything different. I though perhaps I imported the video wrong,, then in the meida bins the video look fine.. The laptop is set to blend just as the PC is..

So looking for an answer...

Thank You,,,, GLADDEN

DVDs are designed for viewing on a TV. Are you comparing the quality on a TV or just on a computer?

You need to burn a DVD and watch it on a DVD player/TV to determne the final quality.

First of all, if your source footage is interlaced, then don't set the interlace to none.

Secondly, are you looking at the two DVDs on exactly the same playback system? If you are watching the PC DVD on the PC and the laptop DVD on the laptop, then it is probably the two media players playing it back differently.

Hi DaveT2

The DVDs , two disk, one on the PC and one on the laptop are both played on the same dvd player and on a Sony TV.. You can even see the hairingbone in the preview on the PC too.. The laptop DVD look great on the preview and on the Sony TV.. I am begaining to think that I just have a back copy of Vegas.. as this has been going on from day one.. How can I get a sample posted here so you can see it?? Or can I send you an e-mail..

Interlaced video will show the lines in the Vegas preview, unless you set the Project Properties to "Progressive" and you set the Preview Properties to "Best / Full".
Interlaced video will show the lines when played on a progressive monitor or laptop, unless the media player is de-interlacing the video (like Windows Media Player).
Interlaced video will not show the lines when played back on a CRT video monitor.
Interlaced video will not show the lines played in a DVD player and TV.
Non-interlaced (Progressive) video will not show the lines, whether played back in the Vegas preview, on a computer monitor (CRT or Progressive), or DVD player and TV.

Does this help?
None of this has anything to do with Vegas, just how you render it and play it.

Thank you for you reply.
1. Vegas preview show bad lines on the pc,, the laptop looks fine.
2. I play the rendered video with windows Media player.. shows bad lines,,, hairingbone.
3. Fnished the rendered video just as I did with the laptop in DVDA. played the fnished DVD on the Sony CRT, The PC looks very bad,,, just like you see when played on Windows Media Player... The DVD made on the laptop is beautiful.. SONY CRT TV with the same DVD player.. " Panasonic DVD player.. Then played it on the Toshiba CRT in the bedroom and a philips DVD player. Same thing,,,, PC made DVD very bad hairingbone,,,, Laptop made DVD,,, beautiful..

How can I post a samply of the bad DVD.. 5 second is all you need to see the problem . I sent Tech support a sample and they say ,, yes we do see the problem.. No Fix yet..

How can I post a Sample... and Iwill do it now..

Thank You for your help.

You could upload a clip to your own website and post a link here.
You would also need to post all of your render settings for it to make any sense.
If it shows the lines in Windows Media Player (not Media Player Classic), then you made an unintended mistake in the rendering. Gaining some experience through practice and reading is the key here ;?)

Glad to look at your sample, maybe it will give us some clue as to what you did.

PC made DVD very bad hairingbone,,,, Laptop made DVD,,, beautiful..

There has to be a difference somewhere (render settings?) between these two machines.
IMO, it's impossible for for Vegas/DVDA to turn out different quality DVDs on different machines that are supposedly set up the same.

Mike, I'm betting it's a mistake in Project Properties in either Vegas or DVDA. Waiting for his clip for further clues . . .

> still do not see how to get a sample for you ALL TO SEE

Just post a sample (a few seconds should be enough) showing the problem anywhere and let us know where you posted it. Since you have a website, the simplest thing would be for you to put it there and then let us know its URL.

I believe Silverlight only supports wmv & mp4 video streams.

Here's an Silverlight example of an mp4 video of my dog: http://www.jazzythedog.com/jazzyhg21.aspx

And here's the code used to display the video:

plugin that will allow you to view the video.</p>

After Editing: Hmmm... the must be a bug in this forum's code block. The html title tag should NOT be enclosed in square brackets, but I'm sure any web developer would notice and correct that error easily.

Just a shot in the dark here - are your video files on the same drive as your system or on a separate drive. Are you rendering to a separate drive. This could cause some strange problems if the are on the same drive.

Lynn
GLADDEN wrote on 9/25/2009, 7:31 PM
OK,,,, I FTP two mpeg files of the problem I am having.. It is on my website:

www.GladdenPhotographs.com/movies .. I got it there, but; could not see it so I learned I must " Save target as " save it on my computer and then windows media player with play it... NOW YOU AND THE FORUM CAN SEE THE PROBLEM...

To everone: I have been working on this problem for about a month now,,, everday and late into the night and some till daylight. Only geting a few hours of sleep a day... SO need to break from think about this and GOT SOME REAL SLEEP LAST NIGHT.. Oh boy do I feel better and thinking better..

I look forward to hearing from you and the forum.

So let me be clear about what is going on with this DVD.

The DVD done with VEGAS is as you will see very bad with hairingbone and the sound is way to loud. When I told Vegas tech support ' 2nd day after installing the program and about two weeks ago and they said yes they do see the problem.. I e-mail them again Monday... no return e-mail and no fix from them. What is up with that?? When I made a DVD with Sony PMB on the PC the video was GREAT..The meida I brought in to Vegas is from the same files in Sony PMB program. When I look at the media files in Vegas media bin look good there too.. Bring the media on the Vegas time line and now the media looks bad and this is in the preview window,, Preview is set to best. Rendered it out and played it on Windows Media Player... Very bad just as I see in the preview window plus the audio is way to loud.. After trying to get the Vegas techs to help me with no fix even tho I e-mailed two samples files to them ,,,,,, the same files now on my website,,,,, I then Started to work on the Part 2 Disk 2 of the wedding on the laptop. Thinking I am going to have the same problem,,,,,,, The video was beautiful... even in the preview. I rendered it out and looked at it and,,,, beautiful. Made a DVD from that in DVDA and beautiful..Did the video in 3 day with not trouble... So,,,, I thought ,,,,, now I can find what the problem is by compairing how Vegas is set up on the PC veruses the Laptop.... There is nothing different,,,, at least none that I can find....I have spent hours looking for something different betwen the two...So I begain to do some test,,,, around 50 test.... NO CHANGE... SO,,,,, I am thinking.... When I did a DVD in Sony PMB it is beautiful ,,,, then that lets out anthing with the computer I think I got a bad upload and or a bad install.... SO,,, I am going to take the saved work file made with Vegas on the PC and copy it to the Laptop along with the music.. The Sony media files are in the same place and the same wedding media files as in the PC and the music too,,,, My Videos and My Music... And then I can point Vegas to where they are,,, would think. OR,,, I could move the work files out of Vegas on the PC and put them some where I can find them.. uninstal Vegas and reinstall.. Vegas people are also giving me a ruff time because I am using vegas on my laptop and they want to charge me again.. Thanks for the help,,,, you can see I am having a problem because I sent you two test videos 4 weeks ago.. So for now I am using a trial version on the laptop and am in fear what when that will run out.. I would think tech would be doing everthing they could do to help me get the program working,,,,, that I paid for... Don't I have a right to get a program that works that I paid for. So ,,,, this is the weekend that I told the Bride and Groom that there Wedding DVD would be ready..... It will not be ready..Thanks Tech support for all you support. Yes I am unhappy.. I do thank all of you in the forum for your Help in trying to figure out what the problem is... AND we will find the problem.. SO,,,,, please go to my website: www.GladdenPhotographs.com/movies click on " Save Target As " and see for you self... what is going on... I am sure most of you know how to do this.. First time for me to upload FTP to my website..have ftp to printers and such but not my own website..I am an explorer and photographer and videographer. I captian my on boat for years for Jacques Cousteau and others to far away islands in some times 30 foot seas. I am one of the pioneers of the dome port and was one of the first to use Nikons 55 macro lens in 350 feet of water.. AND come back with beautiful photographs in almost impossible conditions,,,,, over and over again.. I worked for Sea Research and Development and created some of the most advanced underwater cameras of the time. You will see some of my work on my website. Click on ' New Photographs : and see some brand now photographs. Shooting a 50D CANON,,, LOVE IT... My work is published all over the world.. I help my friends to learn and my friends help me to learn... SO,,,, Thank You Forum.. We will get this program to work as it should,,,,,,, I am sure... You guys and ladys are great,,,, wish we could all get together and just go fishing...

Thank You Forum people for you help...

Your problem is moire. If you want to understand why you have this problem Google "Optical Low Pass Filter". This is a vital part of any digital camera both still and video. When you downscale an image to a lower resolution the OLPF is no longer enough to filter out high frequency detail at the lower resolution and hence you hit problems with the Nyquist Limit.

You fix this by reducing the resolution BEFORE downscaling. This is easily done by using the Gaussian Blur FX in Vegas. You only usually need a tiny amount and can adjust the amount depending on what is in front of the camera. Values of 0.001 to 0.003 should be more than adequate. You may only need to apply it in the vertical direction. As I only have the downscaled images I cannot give you exact values, you will need to experiment to get just enough image softening to stop the aliasing without making it too soft.

Why this happens on one PC and not the other is very simple CONTENT!

Notice I stressed how you need to do this BEFORE downscaling. Use a HDV 60i project and render to...your SD mpeg-2. Render at Best. Do some quick tests, couple of seconds of that shot with the brick wall will tell you if you've got it correct.

Bob.
MarkWWW wrote on 9/26/2009, 7:09 AM
Well, both of those examples have serious problems if you ask me.

If the problem you are complaining about is the way the brickwork shows dark and light banding as the camera moves in the VegasTestSep1509.mpg example then the problem is indeed one of Moire, and the solution is as farss has described.

But if the problem you are complaining about is the dog-tooth effect on vertical edges, shown in this image taken from the VegasTest2Sep1509.mpg example:

then the problem is that the footage was shot as interlaced but has been scaled as though it was progressive. To prevent this, make sure you have a de-interlace method set when you perform the scaling operation.

Have a search in the Forum for further information - it has been discussed a lot recently.

Hi Mark..

Yes,,, moire,,, that isit.. I am going to read " farss " information.. and the dog-tooth,, yes that is bad too... Do not see any of this when done on the Lapto...

Remember when I make a DVD from Sony PMB the video is great ,,,, just the same as when done on the laptop..??? I have the interlace set to blend just as on the laptop... If I set the interlace to none the moire is gone and it look alot better. Still not near as good as when done on the laptop...Plus the sound is way way to loud too. Perhaps the dog-tooth would be not so bad if I set it to interpolate,,, what do you think??? Then this problem is not just alittle bad,, it is very bad and sound too is way way to laud too..

I sent the two samples to Tech again Monday and still no responce from them..Got an e-mail they got the question. They say " yes they do see the problem " No answer yet,,, I first send them these same two samples 2 days after I installed the program..Told them about this the second day I installed the program.. I see the dog-tooth manly when some one is moving....

.Could you get a screen shot of the brick backgrond so othere can see..How can I get a screen shot posted like you have here so othere can see... To keep things clear,,, the problem is Vegas Movie Platnium 9. Then in explore I see the work is in Vegas Movie Studio PE.. Trying to get all the cards on the table..

To day is when I told the Bride and Groom I would have there DVD, two Disk , ready so I am seting low in the water today..I will do anthing for the Bride and Groom and work day and night for them.. I did the part 2 disk 2 on the laptop in 3 days and it is beautiful...
