Unable to load legacy .veg file

Richard-N wrote on 10/22/2023, 8:18 AM

I am currently running Vegas Pro 21 build 108 and I have never encountered .veg file loading problems.

A former associate has passed me an old Vegas project I have requested from him to rework myself. I have no idea what version it was created with but I know that it dates from 2010. I have never previously had any problems revisiting .veg files from previous versions but this one seems to be the exception.

When I try to load it I get into a dialog that says "Deactivation not successful. The program has possibly been deactivated for this device". I hit OK and after a few seconds the dialog reappears and we continue in the loop. Vegas then needs to be terminated in the task manager to get out of this loop. I am working with other projects with no problem.

Sadly no .bak file came with the project files. I have enabled all legacy options in 'Preferences'

Any ideas?

The .veg files are supposed to be forward compatible, but I suppose it's possible some Sonic Foundry versions may not work.

The file headers are written in plain English, so you can find out the version it was created in by using any hex editor.

An alternative would be to upload the file to Drive or Dropbox and let others here take a look at it.

Thanks Mark.

It appears that the original was saved by Sony Vegas 8. I have no idea if compatibility goes bach that far. I would appreciate user comments before I give up hope completely.... Sample at the link

Hi Richard, I downloaded the project and opened it without issue in VP 21. The media is just mts and wav which should work fine and the Fx I see are brightness and contrast, which still exists in VEGAS.

I'd conclude something is wrong with your installation of VEGAS, not this project.

Richard, I've redone several Vegas 8.0c projects in newer versions of Vegas, and the only problems I've encountered are with AC3 audio, which used actual Dolby Digital codec in those days. That said, I'll take a look at your project.

That's a lot of little .m2t files. One of them might be fubar.

That's quite a silly message you got. Can't say I've seen it before.

I was able to open your project without the media. I got no message from Vegas Pro 21-108.

Thanks very much... Vegas 21 is otherwise working normally for me. Being a Vegas 365 guy I upgraded from 20 to 21 in the last few months. I downloaded the 21 trial before deleting 20 and de-authorising it with Magix. The authorisation of ver 21 went Ok and I have completed several projects since.

Given the content of the dialog it seems that I might have defeated the anti-piracy checking logic somehow. Seems the best course of action is to remove Vegas and do a clean install from scratch.

@Richard-N

I replaced all nine-hundred-twenty-thousand clips with the one .m2t clip that I found on any of my machines and a .wav file that no one in their right mind would want to hear. The project loaded without additional drama.

I think that is a good idea.

Then double-check on your account the right version is registered. https://www.magix.com/us/support/my-service-center/

Removed any trace of Vegas products. Did a registry clean with CCleaner. Rebooted and did a clean install. Problem solved. When I got to the part where I had a dialog and the system hung it was actually trying to download some MPEG-2 element from Magix but failing. Anti-Piracy measures apparently don't always work as intended. Works perfectly now
