Upgrade from Vegas 19 to 22 (resurrecting a question from last year)

m1ke_a wrote on 11/17/2024, 8:54 AM

Hi folks.

Last year I got a Canon R6 Mk II and discovered Vegas 19 doesn't like the 4K 10 bit 4:2:2 HEVC files. Here's my previous post from last Oct - https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/trying-to-move-to-4k-files-but-previewing-is-doing-my-head-in--143008/

Converting clips to Pro Res via Shutter Encoder is easy enough but takes a lot of storage so I'm wondering if Vegas 22 now has native support for this format? The current upgrade price is attractive.

Thanks very much

Here's my experience with Vegas Pro 22-194 on the machine in my signature:

FWIW, Vegas 22 here. Seems fine at Best-->Full. I also tried 32-bit full range and applying the C-Log3 LUT. Similarly getting the 25 FPS frame rate without lag.

John, Chris, thank you. I only dabble with videoing and as I said last year, the inability to playback 'native' files put(s) me off doing more. But from what you've said and shown, Vegas 22 looks like a viable upgrade and would do away with the need to transcribe to Pro Res?

A clip I'm fiddling with atm was 17:25 mins / 20.64Gb out of the camera and 91.4Gb after conversion to Pro Res. (BTW I shot this as max res as Bonfire processions and fireworks are lighting contrast nightmares and I wanted to get the best source material I could)

Heh. I'm more fascinated with audio, and the occassional peak tweaked my OCD. 😆

I generally work in 10GB-30GB chunks (log footage) as I rarely shoot longer than that in one go.

BTW, John appears to have a slightly better PC than mine. So there's that.

@m1ke_a Hi, late to the party, I chopped it & played with a bit, I too also had no problem with that file.

Thank you all. Seems like you're all in agreement the upgrade will be worth it and I suppose I should look to see what else it offer!

I'd suggest doing the trial and see if it works well for your purposes. In general decoding has come a long way since 19. I also appreciate the better audio engine (VST3 support, etc.)

@m1ke_a As RogerS suggested, i too highly recommend you give the trial version a thorough test run first.
