Well - here's something that you can do if you guys are itching to do a rack focus effect on a completely infocus shot (this can potentially take a while.
Copy your video track three times (or as many times as necessary to have a BG, forground, and however many objects that you want to move the focus to.)
Mask your forground object on your top track
mask each track after that to the object that you want to shift the focus to,
then put down the BG layer.
Put down a couple of linear blur filters on each layer
then make sure that on blur is going vertically bluring, while the other is doing horizontal blurring (to give it an omnidirectional blur) - or use a gaussian blur filter (not sure if one way renders faster than the other)
then simply adjust each layer to the amount of blur you want ont it (making sure that the BG is out of focus (or foreground - depending on the direction of your focus movement)
Then render for hours (after spending a lot of time masking each object)
It's not gonna be fast (but it's gonna get you what you want if you really need it and didn't do it in the first place)
I'm not sure if you may need to feather the masks somewhat to maintain the illusion of reality for out of focus objects (as they would actually "increase" in "size" as they go out of focus)
I've never done it - so I may be mistaken - but logically it makes sense (maybe there's a tutorial on the VASST site (if not I could make one if they accept them from anyone - I think they do as long as they are legit).
If you need more details - I'll be happy to oblige (other wise, I'm sure others here, will help you too)
Williamconifer - sounds like you need to wrte some kind of script and then where ever you have a tansition you can just apply this FX chain with a script)
But all you need to do to accomplish what you're wanting to do, is do a pan/crop in for the zoom, and a that double blur filter I talked about in my previous post starting out with out of focus and then going in focus.
For the zoom you are describing... It's not an FX you need... to zoom in on a photo/video you use the pan/crop tool. It's the icon above the FX icon on the event.
“… I want to create a Rack Focus effect as a transition to quickly and easily apply in my photo montage work. “
You might try the Cross Blur transition and see if it gets you close to what you want. It works pretty well for stills and would be a quick drag and drop method which is also one of your criteria.
all I'm saying is that using Reverse I can change my mind about in what direction I want the Rack to happen.
Grazie, why not do it both ways in-camera? Whenever I do a rack focus shot in the field, I always repeat it going the other way. Same thing with pans & zooms. If the shot is a left to right pan, I'll repeat it going right to left. If I've zoomed in to something, I'll zoom back out. Only takes a few more seconds and then I have a lot more choices in the edit suite without having to do anything. And yes, there have been several times over the years that having that extra shot has saved me :-)
"Grazie, why not do it both ways in-camera? " . . true . . . true . . true .. But IF you hadn't? And IF it would make all the difference? But I guess you knew that too - eh?
Then your solution is definitely a great one. I've just been doing it my way for so long that it's become second nature. I son't know if I should call itexperience or old age or just being anal about shooting :-)
