User>Documents>MAGIX Downloads folder 13GB of .EXEs

Carl-G wrote on 7/15/2023, 2:42 PM

Windows 10, VegasPro20: Is the User>Documents>MAGIX Downloads Folder contents of 42 .exe files (totaling 13.2GB) without effecting Vegas Pro or Sound Forge, and all plugin .exe located there. (Isn't this just a superfluous folder once the items are all installed?) OR, are these files necessary. I'm running Vegas Pro 20, with Boris FX Continuum, Vegas DVD Architect, HitFilm, Celemony Melodyne, iZotope Ozone 9, SpectraLayers, etc... and it seems the Exe's in the Downloads Folder can be deleted. Wrong or right? Other thoughts?

@Carl-G Hi, although nowadays most if not all can be downloaded again I keep all my 91GB of downloaded software files on a separate SSD drive that has been in 3 PC's now, it makes it easier to get up n running if there's a problem, Last yr I formatted my PC & had to reload my software, it was fairly easy just to go to my drive & install.

I do too! I did not put these .exe's (42 of them) in my \User\Documents\Magix Downloads\Installations Manager Folder... the Installs Did!! OH... I forgot to mention....that Key Point: the .exe's are all in a subfolder called "Installations Manager". That is why I'm perplexed as to whether I can "Move" them to my separate SSD backup Drive.... or does Vegas depend on any of those files in the "Installations Manager" directory for startup???

@Carl-G One way to find out, move one 🤣 I don't think you need them because i'm 99.9% sure i had programs where i didn't keep the install files, like ones that were on disc or i have got programs but not the exe file. The latest Vegas is easy to download again if it does go to 💩

I have deleted big files from that folder many times, they are backups.

I don't seem to even have such a folder.

If you want to keep a backup of the installers in case you need to install again (without needing to download again), these can be very useful.

Absolutely and, IMO, keep those backups on a separate desktop HDD, a portable HDD or in the Cloud so that the backups are not on the same C:/ HDD/SSD as the original programs - if that HDD/SSD fails, there equally goes down the drain the backups.

I move the contents of the folder to my backup drive before I do my system image backup. I keep backups of different states of the boot system and leaving the Vegas Pro installation files on the boot disk is unnecessary since I could just restore the system image. (Here are the system images that I've saved while building my last hardware system on February 24, 2023. The number of backups will drop to just a few any day now.

For a long time it's been my practice with applications that download zipped or other compressed installation files, then extract the contents on to the boot disk, then install from that location.

I keep a copy of the last and final builds of most software so I can install them on a base out of-the-box Windows image without downloading again.

I also back up those files to another drive and an external USB3 drive, then clean the default folder.

Thank you ALL for excellent space saving/practical advice! I really appreciate the active feedback. Dennis, thank you for the examples (reminding that imaging versions are helpful during new builds).
