I had another email from David Taylor. He says Cineform know of the problem and are working on it. As ever I also read in the Cineform forum that Sony will not loan Cineform a camera to test and will only supply dat files, not real video.

Mike...

I deal with it by burying my head in the sand ;o)
Not trying to be a smart axx. CFHD doesn't work reliably with native mp4 wrapped files, but, it seems to work well with the Clip browser conversions to .mxf. As far as I can see, there is no quality loss exporting to the .mxf file via the Sony Browser, so, until Cineform can fix their problem, that's what I'm doing.
MH_Stevens wrote on 3/2/2008, 11:53 AM
Bill: When you say "CFHD seems to work well with ClipBrowser" do you mean that after converting to mxf you use Cineform to convert the mxf to avi?
Bill Ravens wrote on 3/2/2008, 12:03 PM
If I'm gonna use CFHD, yes.
It's just as easy to import the mxf files, at this point, but, CFHD wrangles the colorspace with less pain.

Once again I have to agree with Bill -- that's what I've been doing. Convert the files with the browser and then convert to NEO. Some versions back I had trouble using HDLink for the whole job and in any case have taken to browsing clips to select takes for export.

Build 157 (still beta) fixes to MP4 issues, and should now be the preferred method over converting to MXF first. If there are clips that randomly crash Vegas8b, let CineForm support or myself have some samples, as this is the first I've heard of it.

Both David Taylor and Support know that build 157 beta does not correct this issue, at least for me.
David Newman wrote on 3/2/2008, 5:51 PM
Do they have clips from you yet that cause this, or is it not clip dependent? When support has repeatable data, that is when I hear about things.

I think my issue doesnt go along with this thread so Ill delete it and post something new if its benefical.
MH_Stevens wrote on 3/2/2008, 6:20 PM
Dan: I only communicated with David this weekend so don't be surprised you have not heared. In fact David seems to have been working all weekend on this. It seems to me to NOT be clip dependant and I think Bill has seen the same. It's random.

Tonight I have had dinner and a lot of wine and I am a bit tired but in the AM I will give a lot more detail to support.

Bill, Serena:

Explain in more detail SVP. When I try to convert the mxf to Cineform avi I get a message "format not supported"

My experience is with Neo HD v3.24. Hard crash while converting the mpr in HDLink. I'll download and try v3.25
Bill Ravens wrote on 3/2/2008, 6:42 PM
OK, d/led Neo HD v3.25. It has, so far, successfully converted EX1 mp4 files. Note that the only way this works is if the BPAV directory, in its entirety, is copied to the hard drive and not renamed. I believe this is normal behavior.

MH_Stevens wrote on 3/2/2008, 7:32 PM
Bill:
I just copied BPAV to my HDD in its entireity and then within the CLIP directory converted the mp4 to avi with HDLink and the moment I put the avi files on the time-line Vegas stopped working.

What version of vegas are you using? a or b? Did I do just as you do?

Mike...
v8b

I did this:
1-open Sony clip browser
2-browse to SxS card, then down to the file, itself
3-drag from upper browser window to the lower window(this copies the BPAV directory)
4-close browser
5-open HDLINK and convert.

It won't work to do explorer functions(copy, paste, delete, etc.) on the SxS card. Any operations not done via the Sony Clip Browser will corrupt the SxS card. Also, you can put the BPAV directory you copied to your hard drive in any folder you wish, but, you can't rename the BPAV folder without losing the contents.

Weird, huh?
MH_Stevens wrote on 3/3/2008, 8:13 AM
Bill:
This does not work for me. I have the BPR folder in my project folder with the origina mp4 files (each within it's own folder?) and the converted avi files, but just as before when I move from explorer to either the time-line or put then into the project media list it all dies.

Large file, small files, EX sourced, or not, all working here and will multiple PCs. Please report to support any additional details you have. Also report to Sony support, as it is their program that is failing, maybe they can shed some light on the problem.

Mike,
Have you tried exporting the files (using the browser) which will put mxf files on your HDD. Then run HDLink to convert those to avi.
MH_Stevens wrote on 3/3/2008, 4:08 PM
Serena: Yes, somewhere abouve I have noted this attempt. This is where I get the message "Format not supported". Cineform (atleast build 155/157) will not convert mxf files. Dids you get HDLink to convert mxf files for you?
Here is my sys info if it means anything:
T9300 DCD 2.5Ghz
494 MB Ram
Vista HP 64bit
GeForce 8700M GT
Bios: 60.84.5b.0.14

Anyway I have need now go to the theater to work. We have Angela Au tonight so I must go prepare.

I'll check in when I get back about 0700 GMT
Serena wrote on 3/4/2008, 1:09 AM
Still using 155 I've checked that the process works.

Using the browser I exported mxf files to the HDD. Using HDLink I converted to avi. Put both on timeline and played them.

Have you tried putting mxf clips on the TL and rendering clips to new track; tedious, but worth a try.
MH_Stevens wrote on 3/4/2008, 11:35 AM
Using the browser to put BPAV on hard drive and then cojnvertign still fails.

Rendering to new track failed also. Error must be in the Cineform codex.
Serena wrote on 3/4/2008, 4:16 PM
Interesting. Actually you've done it a little differently to my process, if I've read correctly. I didn't transfer BPAV, but that's perfectly correct. I used the browser to convert the mp4 wrapper to mxf (ie. use the browser to export the clips as mxf to the HDD). Then in HDLink "convert" I selected the folder containing those clips and the clips appear in the window and then "start". I guess you've done all that, but just in case I wasn't clear in describing my workflow.
Bill Ravens wrote on 3/4/2008, 4:37 PM
HDLink will/should work on either method.
1-HDLINK will convert the mp4 files on the SxS card
2-HDLINK will convert the mxf files exported with the clip browser from the SxS card.

Build 158 is due out officially this week, not just beta, and it will add some final polish to the Sony EX1 support. If there are issues with builds 155-157, please report to support clearly with samples data, as currently everyting is pointing to a successful install means it will work fine. We just need to work out for those cases, where the install leaves old components or unregistered components.
