Vegas 14 MPEG 4 (fourCC) Encoding

I'm trying to figure out how to render out to MPEG 4 using the MP4V version of the codec.  I can encode and then covert with ffmpeg just fine but I'd like to encode directly out.  I think any fourCC code will work for what I'm trying to do.  Has anyone successfully used XVID or 3IVX's code in Vegas 14pro?

Bonus Points if you can tell me how to set the default container to mp4 as well.

Vegas does not support MPEG-4 ASP, MP4V or similar codecs natively, in any container. Vegas can support those through Video for Windows, which accepts installable codecs, but the file format for VfW is always AVI.You would have to remux to MP4.

With Quicktime you can generate MPEG-4 ASP but you will need Quicktime installable codecs to get a strict MP4V. The file will be MOV but most apps should accept that if renamed to MP4. MOV and MP4 are near identical. If a strict MP4 is needed you would have to remux the MOV.

That's somewhat what I'm doing now.  I encode to h264 then remux to MP4 using ffmpeg.  It works but it adds an annoying extra step.  I own a QT pro 7 license.  But I thought QT wasn't available any more at all.  Are the codecs available somewhere for it?  Do I just install my old 7 license?

Now I am confused. You asked about generating MPEG-3 MP4V fourcc video. AVC/H.264 is most certainly not basic MPEG-4 ASP or MP4V video, so how was that "working" for you. You must mean that you are rendering to AVC/H.264 and then transcoding to MP4V video.

Quicktime is most certainly still available. It is just not being updated by Apple anymore. If ASP can work for you then, you can output MPEG-4 ASP video via Quicktime in a MOV file. Use the Quicktime "MPEG-4" codec.
