Vegas 16 on Win 10 - crashing each time I render

David-Del wrote on 7/1/2021, 8:54 AM

I am getting very frustrated with Vegas 16 on Win 10 home edition (humble bundle buy). I am not sure if it is the render settings, codexs or whatever, but it is crashing each and every time I render. And the worst part is that it doesn't crash right away - sometimes it is 15% into the render, sometimes it is 23% of the way into the render. During any render, the preview window shows the video frame that is being rendered - in my case, when it crashes, the preview of the render stops - it looks like a still frame - but the render timer keeps going forever and never completes. Is there an updated build for this? Any ideas?

You need to offer more information to have any hope for useful advice.

Which render template are you using (try a screenshot)?
What is your CPU and GPU?

What media are you using (esp. roughly between 15 and 23% of the way through your project)? Use MediaInfo to answer.

What is dynamic ram preview set to in MB?

I apologize for taking so long to get back to this, it has been a busy couple of weeks with work. Here is the download information for the humble bundle :

File name : VEGAS_Pro_16_Edit_DLM_Humble_Bundle_2017_210576_210406_08-08

Build : 424 (16.0.0.424)

RogerS wrote on 7/7/2021, 8:40 AM

Good that's the final version. Can you answer the other questions, too?

David-Del wrote on 7/7/2021, 8:51 AM

Sorry, I missed that

The preview is set to auto.
GPU - Geforce GTX 750 ti
CPU - AMD FX 6300 (6 core)
DD3 - 16gig
MOBO - Gigabyte GA-970A-d3

Mediainfo - I erased the partial files, so I will have to render again to get that info.
I left the dynamic RAM set to default

A screenshot of your render template if you customized it would be great. Otherwise tell us which one you used.

MediaInfo of source files could answer some questions, too.

David-Del wrote on 7/7/2021, 11:27 PM

I used two different render setting, both with the same result :

1) MAgix AVC/AAC 720P 29.97

2) Mainconcept MPEG2 HDV 720-30p

RogerS wrote on 7/8/2021, 12:17 AM

Does 1) mean that you did not use one of the GPU accelerated variants (NVENC, QSV, VCE) but just Mainconcept?

Is the source media variable framerate? Is it from a phone, DJI or GoPro device?

Do you have Fx applied to the media at around 20% on your timeline and if so, which ones?

Is your NVIDIA driver as up to date as it can be for this card?

David-Del wrote on 7/8/2021, 9:21 AM

No FX on the timeline, yes this is a new install of win 10 and the nvidia is up-to-date. The source video is from a regular webcam via streamyard.

RogerS wrote on 7/8/2021, 9:27 AM

The webcam capture is likely the issue. I haven't seen MediaInfo for it but here are recommended OBS settings as a guide for the future. https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-what-obs-studio-settings-work-well-with-vegas-pro--109925/

I'd try transcoding just the webcam source video to Magix Intermediate, replacing it in your project and see if it works better.

David-Del wrote on 7/8/2021, 10:39 AM

So I should take the source video in a brand new project? What should I render it out as exactly?

What is dynamic ram preview set to in MB?

Why is this STILL an issue (and it is)?

I don't know about the dynamic preview - does that cause the issue usually? I would just as soon turn off the preview completely if that would fix it.

paul-marshall wrote on 7/8/2021, 5:26 PM

In my experience with VP18 - confirmed again today - for reliable rendering with NVEC the dynamic ram preview needs to be set to 0 but for smooth editing it needs to be at least the default 200MB.

Windows 11.0 (64-bit)
Intel® Core™ i9 Eight-Core Processor i9-11900K (3.5GHz) 16MB Cache

Can you please give me some direction on how to change my settings for this?

RogerS wrote on 7/8/2021, 6:46 PM

Well, you never responded to whether you were using a NVENC template. If not it likely won't help you. It's under preferences snd you will see a number in megabytes. You can change it before you render to 0.

Sure, take the whole source video (or at a minimum the part you intend to use) and try to render out as a Magix Intermediate file. Match the framerate. There are other apps that can do this with files in batch but right now mainly trying to figure out the cause of your problem.

David-Del wrote on 7/8/2021, 9:04 PM

I apologize for not responding to that, I thought giving the default rendering setting covered the NVENC.

RogerS wrote on 7/8/2021, 9:09 PM

So the answer was you chose the MagixAVC template I highlighted in the screenshot above and not one that said NVIDIA NVENC after it? In that case, disabling dynamic ram preview will likely do nothing (though you can certainly try it).

Still don't know if this is variable framerate or otherwise unusual footage. If transcoding solves your problem, see if there are other ways you can capture it in the future to avoid that step. The OBS guide I shared is one such way; the program you use may have other settings that work better in Vegas, too.

David-Del wrote on 7/17/2021, 8:42 AM

I tried the MagixAVC template and it still crashed.

j-v wrote on 7/17/2021, 9:46 AM

@David-Del
To help you we need a lot more information than you provided untill now.
- Give a screenshot of the menu Options/Preferences/ Video
- Give the exact Mediainfo of your used sourcefiles following this tutorial
- Give here the exact driver(s) version(s) found at Control Panel/Device Manager/Display Adapters/Properties/Driver, like this of mine of the Intel GPU,

for your older Nvidia GPU
