VEGAS 16 - Storyboard issues

Harold-Linke wrote on 8/29/2018, 12:45 PM

I very much like the new storyboard.

It makes the creation of a rough cut very fast.

But, during working with it I found some issues:

1. the mediamanager and the storyboard cannot show more than 100 clips at a time. When you look at the storyboard on a big screen where 200 clips could be shown, only 100 clips from the bottom of the screen show the correct thumbnails. All others show the file icon. When you hover over one of these clips the correct thumbnails are shown, while other thubnails disappear. When you move the mouse away the lower 100 thumbnails are restablished and the others deleted.

2. After working with the storyboard some time (5 to 10 minutes) I always get the error message: "There is an error with the Undo-Buffer. Please save your project and close the application." (The message is in German, the translation may be not correct)

3. When you hover over thumbnails and select in and out-points with the mouse, the pre-window shows the frame the mouse is on correctly. This is nice. But this only works for the main storyboard. If you create additional storyboards the pre-view does not work. This is not good as the thumbnails are still too small to see details.

4. Thumbnails are still too small. Especially on high resolution screens. 2 to 3 times the size would be nice.

5. When openning a VP15 project with more than one timeline, the storyboard behaves crasy. Clips that are added on the timeline at the start of the timeline are shown at the end of the storybors (with the correct time, but the wrong sequence)

6. It is a nice feature that the thumbnail keeps the last frame the mouse hovered over. This makes it very easy to change the frame in the thumbnail. But it also makes it easy to change thumbnails unintentionally while moving with the mouse to a clip in the middle of the screen. It would be nice to be able to switch off the "hovering" by presseng e.g. the "SHIFT" key. or vice versa.

7. To play back the storyboard you have to click on the "Play"-button with the mouse. It would be nice to be able to use the keyboard e.g. the spacebar to start and stop playing tghe storyboard.

So, this is all for now. But in general I like this feature and I hope it will evolve in the future.

Great post! Summarizes my experience exactly. I am still trying to work out a good workflow that will let me use this feature as-is. It is probably the most important new feature (for me) of the last several versions.

Some additional points:

1) Thumbnails need to be persistent (cached?); not redrawn. No limit to quantity. (and YES they are still too small on my UHD display.) Adobe bridge is a good example of this.

2) Low performance PC with UHD footage = crashing/instability/poor scrubbing. (MagicYUV Proxies makes this stable & usable; Vegas' own proxies do not.)

3) IN/OUT points are not always maintained when dragging a new storyboard to the timeline.

4) It is really easy to make a big mess of your timeline. Go slow! Or just use non-dynamic storyboards.

5) It's hard to click around without changing IN/OUT points inadvertently. (Maybe need a switch to turn hover scrub off?)

Thanks Kinvermark,

your points are valid too.

I used UHD XAVC-S material for the first tests. I saw a problem in the performance with my PC too. (i7-7700 3.60 GHz)

I now did another test with DV-AVI material.

No change. Only 100 thumbnails possible.

But editing in the storyboard with this material is much more stable than with the UHD material

Another issue: Everytime I switch from one clip to another 20% of the thumbnails are replaced by the file icon and then redrawn.

When testing the new storyboard I noticed 2 issues.

1) When exporting projects, the following error message occurs. Could be that it occurs only in the trial version.

2) If a project was created in the English version and then loaded into German version, in addition to the entry "Main Timeline" a entry "Haupt-Timeline" appears in the Storyboard bins.
Main Timeline behaves like additional storyboard, but contains all the items.

I tried use Storyboard Bin...but result is complete mess for me (or I do not comprehend what it is for):

  1. Clips with multiple audio tracks creates new line/tracks in timeline (sometimes and sometimes don't). In my example I would expect 3 tracks in timeline (1 video and 2 audio), but there are 10 tracks.
  2. Some clips are overlapped. It might be due adding new clips before another one.
  3. Placeholder which is replaced in storyboard stays in timeline.

In current state it is much more work to clean up mess from using storyboard than adding clips to timeline manually.

I have Vegas Pro 16 and I watched the tutorial and the storyboard does not work. I have started a new custom project but it does not show the clips in the storyboard nor can I drag a clip there. Odd. I have not tried uninstall/reinstall because it's a time consuming project and then I have to reset all my preferences. Since I never used it before, no loss. Maybe I will try to reinstall when I am in between projects.

Update: I applied the latest patch, 361, and set the storyboard to "Automatically synchronize Main Timeline storyboard" and it is working now, well, at least in my initial test.

4. hold CTRL and turn the mouse wheel to change thumbnail size
