Vegas 17 user with a Vegas 18 trial that's not going well

Hey guys,

I am currently on the fence about getting the Vegas Pro Suite upgrade for Vegas 18. I currently am running Vegas 17.0 build 455 and I am pretty happy with it overall. I have seen some videos and feedback online about how much better Vegas 18 is under the hood, but when I started my free trial of it, I am not happy with it so far.

I am currently working on a multi-cam shoot I did for a band where I shot footage for them with 3 cameras - one a GoPro Hero 9, One a Sony AX100, and the other is a Sony NX100. All the footage was 1080p at 60fps. I am currently editing it in Vegas 17 (build 455) without any crashing/freezing issues.

However, when I open the project in Vegas 18 (build 527) and turn on the multi cam edit tool, it plays fine for a little while, and then the video ends up freezing while the audio continues to play. When I hit stop, the audio stops, but I can't do anything else after that. Vegas whites out, and I usually have the ctrl+alt+delete and kill it in task manager to get it to go away so I can restart it.

I know there are a million things that could cause issues, and a million different system setups. I have been using Vegas since version 10, so I have been around the block with it. Does anyone working with Vegas 18 have issues with it over 17? Should I upgrade or hold out?

System specs:
AMD Ryzen 9 3950X
32gigs of Ram
3 SSD drives; all of them 2TB running on PCIE 4.0
Nvidia RTX 2080ti

Your current version of Vegas Pro 17 is running nice and well, So stick with it!

I am currently using Vegas Pro 18 with no issues whatsoever. But, since you are running the trial and experiencing major issues, and your current workflow isn't heavily dependent on a new feature or features available in Vegas Pro 18, i'd say stay with Vegas Pro 17 for the time being.

I would also stick to @Steve_Rhoden recommendation - besides, in all probability - a version 19 will be released in the summer - if you want to upgrade software-wise, I would then pull a test version again and deal with it more concretely.
It is possible that you will have setting problems again with version 19 - but you don't have to skin the cat twice.

Have you checked your preference settings in VP18 and made sure they're the same as in VP17? I ran into that when I was recently demoing VP18. Forgot about a couple setting adjustments I made in VP17 to make it run smoother, opened the same project in VP18 and was getting random crashes. Went back and reviewed my setting in VP17 and made the same preference adjustments in VP18 and I was back to running smooth.

I would reset VP 18 as some of the workarounds that were useful for 16 and 17 are no longer needed. In preferences like file I/O click on default all. Or to reset everything hold down control + shift on startup.

Walter's advice is good though- a new version seems to come out each summer so if you're happy with 17 perhaps wait a bit longer and see what 19 has in store.

I actually just tried this today proper to you posting the suggestion, and it worked out well. In the I/O preferences, it also helped one of my projects to enable legacy mode for the AVC codec or whatever it is (not in front of the PC at the moment). It runs pretty smooth now.

I like 18 so far now that I have it working properly. It seems faster navigation wise, And it is handling my 2K and 4K videos like a champ.

Would having a trial version of VP18 be the issue?
