Vegas 21.0 runs slow as molasses on a brand new computer

cory-choy wrote on 9/27/2023, 9:41 AM

I have a brand spanking new computer. The specs are here:

The GPU is an RTXA400.

I'm trying to take a single clip of 4K footage, running on a internal hard drive, shot on an FX6 and do a simple crossfade and the video preview frame rate chokes. It also takes over 10 minutes to build peaks for a 6 minute file.

What is going on? Can someone help me click all the right setting to make Vegas run properly on this machine?

I desperately want to be able to use this software, but it is so glitchy it's hard to get it to work :(

To find out which GPU's are used by Vegas 21 and if yess for which tasks you have to show here screenshots of Options/Preferences/Video and Options/Preferences File I/O of that installed Vegas 21

@cory-choy
Settings are almost right exept set your Dynamic Ram Preview Max at Video back to the default value or 0 if you don't use that preview option a lot.
Further I don't see your iGPU Intel® UHD Graphics 770 somewhere and this one is very important for decoding and playing in Vegas.
If it does not show up in Device Manager/Display Adapters you have to allow it in the BIOS

Thanks! I'm not sure what you meen by iGPU -- but I have choices here

As you can see I have just a single clip on the timeline and a basic cross fade on the video. The frame rate a preview is completely unstable. how do I fix this?

If you have the same choice at File I/O / Hardware Decoder To Use try to switch to that one and look if it goes better.
Also look at Vegas/ Help/Check for Driver Updates if you need to update one or both

Thanks-- no-- it goes badly with both. I'm not sure what to do with this DRIVER UPDATES box-- but it seems maybe faulty or broken?

For preferences/ file io use the default (Intel decoder).

For that NVIDIA GPU just go to the NVIDIA website and check for the latest.

Thanks Roger! I tried all the settings and nothing runs well :( Premiere and Davinci both seem to play the clip just fine. I just don't want to edit on those.

@cory-choy Hi, I use Nvidia Geforce to update my driver, 537.42 is the latest Studio driver. https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/geforce-experience/

You could if you want share a sample file, people can try it & maybe say whether the prob is your system or the media?

Open Google, top right is a sq of dots - Open Google Drive.
Drag that video onto the Google Drive window, let it upload.
Right click on the file on screen - Share.
A window will pop up - General Access - choose 'anyone with the link' - Copy link.
Then on here in a new comment at the top there's a chain button, paste the link on there
Click Comment

I have a very similar new system to you. I have not yet bought V21 but V20 loaded a codec pack prior to importing this video clip. It loaded fine and played back at full frame rate (audio has some awful noise). It built audio peaks in about 4 sec. I am using a 1080Ti GPU. It is snappy and fast no lag. Changed to Intel HD 770 IGPU and it performed the same, all good.

Last changed by andyrpsmith on 9/27/2023, 1:38 PM, changed a total of 1 times.

(Intel 3rd gen i5@4.1GHz, 32GB RAM, SSD, 1080Ti GPU, Windows 10) Not now used with Vegas.

@cory-choy Thanks, I have a different PC to yours so all I can show is how it went for me with a short test.

That file seems fine except the audio which I'm presuming is in the clip,

VLC player won't play it & had to be closed with Taskmanager, MPC player played it without prob, so it maybe that is just a VLC thing. 🤷‍♂️

cory-choy wrote on 9/27/2023, 1:54 PM

@Former user that's how I would think my system should play the clip. @andyrpsmith do you know what codec pack it was-- is there a way to make sure my system has it?

@cory-choy All my software opens that file except one, MMS (Magix Movie Studio) which doesn't surprise me to be honest but it's slightly better sister program VPX does open it,

The only codecs I've installed are whatever comes with Quicktime, & the Microsoft HEVC codec, I doubt they're related to this & I don't know if my system uses codecs that may have come with other software.

Vegas downloaded the codec itself so if it doesn't do it for you it is likely you already have it.

(Intel 3rd gen i5@4.1GHz, 32GB RAM, SSD, 1080Ti GPU, Windows 10) Not now used with Vegas.

@cory-choy
Your file played on my laptop from signature normal and even with a made dessolve.
The used codec is  mxfxavc.dll that comes with Vegas , look

10-bit 4:2:2 AVC in a MXF container isn't a great editing format for VEGAS.

I'd run it through ShutterEncoder and turn it into ProRes. I've worked with FX3 and a7sIII footage shot with different settings in VEGAS- it's worth experimenting. 10-bit 4:2:0 should have GPU decoding support if you don't need 4:2:2.

While this chart is for Resolve, VEGAS is similar with which GPUs can decode what file types: https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/what-h-264-and-h-265-hardware-decoding-is-supported-in-davinci-resolve-studio-2122/

I'm trying to take a single clip of 4K footage, running on a internal hard drive, shot on an FX6 and do a simple crossfade and the video preview frame rate chokes. It also takes over 10 minutes to build peaks for a 6 minute file.

I don't know what your problem is but but as a general overview of your file working with Vegas there's lots of problems.

1. There is a LAG when seeking while playing with MXF, which is much less when rewrapped to MP4

2. There are 8 audio tracks, Vegas only shows 1 and only plays 1, when rewrapped to MP4 all the tracks display but the audio back as static.

3: Efficiency. Although there is that seek lag, the MXF's use of CPU is good. To demonstrate that I ran the project at 60fps, and conformed media to 60fps, the mp4 uses double the CPU and lags, and there is static audio. Resolve plays the MP4 audio fine and there is no CPU penalty for MP4

What I"M describing are general Vegas problems that most likely everyone will experience, but your problem is more extreme and possibly can be fixed.

@Former user Hi, ignoring the audio, myself @j-v & @andyrpsmith had no problems playing the orig file ?

@Former user Yeah his MXF at 24fps and 60fps was perfectly editable. being All-I it should be easy to edit. The MP4 rewrap was the interesting part, did not expect it to use double the CPU, it doesn't behave the way an ALL-I AVC should and I wonder if it's a Vegas bug. Sometimes rewrapping between containers causes variable frame rate which Vegas hates but this wasn't the case here remains CFR ALL-I

I was able to play back the clip Best>Full on my computer listed my Signature.

I split the clip, did a default 1 second transition, and it didn't miss a beat.

Opened the Color Grading panel and used Color Curves, and still it played ok.

But all those audio channels, and the noise in the audio were not acceptable.

Possibly a setting to change audio to stereo instead of 8 channels?

Runs fine here on my PC, fast and snappy with crossfades and all. I did notice Vegas was automatically installing some codec when importing the poster's clip for the first time. I probably never had used that clip format before.

The sound was awful. It reminded me from some of my own failed audio (noise scratches) when I was shooting on a sunny day outside while I was unaware that the brim of my Tilley hat was rubbing the mic on top of the camera ...

Thanks for the responses everybody. The sound is just a scratch track for syncing purposes. There was a separate recording with good audio. This is a wireless camera hop just to match things up with. Unfortunately-- much of what I see on this thread is "works for me!" - does anyone have any ideas about how to solve my problem?
