Vegas 21.0 runs slow as molasses on a brand new computer

@cory-choy Hi, just to follow upon the codec mention, right click on the clip on the timeline,

Mine shows this -

& looking in that folder C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 21.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\mxfxavc I have this -

Do you have the same?

--------------------

PS. yep switching to a different channel got rid of the noise, but i don't know why Vegas doesn't show all the channels?

@cory-choy
When your problem only is that a crossfade does not play fluent enough in preview your possibilities are:
- accept it and render a preview of that part
- don't accept it and search further, starting by resetting Vegas 21 following exactly this tutorial: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/

@Former user Thank you! very helpful. @j-v I'm going to try to reset the settings. The problem is not only that the crossfade doesn't play-- it's that the clip itself stutters! The system and program are too slow to actually work on :(

@cory-choy, wish I could help, but again, the file played back smooth with no cache or proxies. Playing the clip uses about 9% CPU and 9% GPU. No stress at all on the computer hardware.

Curious as to your choice of a GPU.

Also, you use a clap board, so why the noise channel?

And your Dynamic RAM 33%? I see you have a lot of RAM, but also curious as to why so high.

@cory-choy I changed my above post a few times.

The audio scratch you said you used for sync, isn't that what the clap board is for?

You have a system that should play back the clips smoothly. Why did you pick that graphics card?

Your clip was easy to play back on my system, and maybe others, with bigger brains can get to the bottom of this.

@cory-choy said: "... does anyone have any ideas about how to solve my problem?"

"It also takes over 10 minutes to build peaks for a 6 minute file."

That sound like an I/O issue to me.

  • From Device Manager, identify the disk model where the source media resides.

  • Delete the side car files and show us the disk throughput while the machine is grinding away for 10 minutes.

  • Have you run a test on the disk to prove that you don't have an early-life failure? Crystal Disk Mark, Aja System Test
  • Have you saved a system image so you don't have to rebuild the whole system configuration after all the hardware diagnosis I'm about to recommend? Macrium Reflect

@cory-choy Thanks,

It's not easy this one, pretty much everybody can play & edit your clip with no problem, you have the mxfxavc, your GPU driver is the latest Studio driver, when i looked for your GPU driver it was the same as mine i think, 537.42. I don't know if you reset your Vegas? Your PC is more than capable to play these,🤷‍♂️

You had Preview (Auto) in your pic, everyone seems to mention Good or Best, does changing this make any difference?

Just out of curiosity can you show a pic like this with clip playing/editing with Taskmanager open?

Maybe there are issues with the NVIDIA RTXA400 in VEGAS? In the past there were problems with Quadro cards. I don't think they are as well tested as there are a lot fewer people using them than regular RTX GPUs.

That said, John's suggestion to validate the system with a few stress tests is a good one.

Gid's suggestion to do a reset is also possibly helpful. (not clear if you did that or not yet)

Former user wrote on 9/28/2023, 11:07 AM

@john_dennis Thanks, interesting, I don't have an integrated GPU..

The GPU was fairly consistent, small spike when I switched from Good (Half) to Good (Full)

The CPU was flat (almost) but when i switched to Good (Full) I got a noticeable rise during the crossfade.

@juan_rios

You have to check it in Preferences:

Thanks, that is unchecked in mine, now i know 👍

@cory-choy A bit strange that you have a brand new PC still with windows 10...

Windows 11 is around since October 5, 2021 (already 2 years ago!)

If I were you I would switch to windows 11, especially since you have a hybrid processor 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13900K, with fast and slow cores, windows 11 has better support for hybrid processors. They introduced a dedicated thread scheduler to improve core assignment. I am not saying this will solve your issue, but who knows, it may, or at least it will improve things.

I presume your GPU is GPU: NVIDIA RTXA4000, not GPU: NVIDIA RTXA400. For Vegas you probably are better served with a more common gamer oriented GPU card GeForce RTX series 3xxx or 4xxx series. I suspect development and support is in favor of the most used cards in the field anyway, which makes most sense businesswise.

And lastly do not overdo the memory allocation for Dynamic RAM preview: limit your dynamic Ram preview max to 10%; I also have 64GB, so that is about 6.5 GB I allow.

@cory-choy Try putting that clip on your (C) Drive n see how it goes.

RogerS wrote on 9/28/2023, 5:51 PM

Multiple clips at once could exceed what a HDD can transfer.

@cory-choy

Take all your 2.5" mechanical drives to your garage.

Put a 1/4" bit in the chuck of your electric drill.

Drill three holes through the platters.

Throw them in the ewaste container for the next regular pickup.

Never put your FS6 media on a rotating disk again.

HDDs are fine for archiving data. For my editing computers I have 2 SSDs-one for the OS and programs and a second for media.

Did you try to change the preferred decoding in the IO tab already? I have mine usually on iGPU (see picture), and disabled all legacy.

I'm going to swap HDD with a solid state disk and see what happens. Will keep folks posted.

Okay this is interesting. Running data off the M.2 drive is great! Running data off an external USB-C drive (usb-C to usb-C) that is Solid State is NOT. Running data off 7200 RPM HDD is NOT good.

Also, I get a lot of crashes now

Running data off the M.2 drive is great!

I assume that is your SSD (C) Drive ?

-------

PS. My main (C) Drive is an M.2 drive, (Western Digital Black SN850 2TB M.2-2280 SSD, 7000MB/s Read, 5100MB/s Write), your file is on another exactly the same M.2 drive,

RogerS wrote on 9/29/2023, 1:32 PM

No idea about the crash as the error message is generic, but it's not related to the hard drive at least. Send in the problem report and include a link to this thread and your email address.

If you see a pattern with when crashes happen we may be able to help more (often media x GPU).

cory-choy wrote on 10/2/2023, 3:13 PM

I think I'm beginning to figure it out. Right now it looks like it was a data bottleneck with the HD. Still some things that aren't quite right, but at least I can hit play and make a basic crossfade on a single item with no problems. Haven't done a serious project yet. Will keep you all posted-- thanks for all the help everyone!
