Vegas crashes when importing multiple video files to timeline

David-Koci wrote on 4/21/2024, 8:07 PM

Not sure if this is an issue with the latest build, I am new to Vegas been using another product prior. I am trying to use Vegas to create sports highlight videos, this requires me to import 100+ video clips to project media and then trying to move all the videos into the timeline for editing.

Sounds straight forward however Vegas seems to choke on this each time. I have rebooted and re-installed Vegas but the results are the same each time. Vegas is unable to take all my files and move them to the timeline, its becomes unresponsive and after a few minutes I "end task" the program.

Is this a bug of the latest build? Or was Vegas just not designed to handle large volume of video files being moved to the timeline all at once?

System Specs - Windows 10 Pro, Intel i7-8700 CPU 3.2GHz 16GB of RAM

If there is a setting I need to enable or disable please let me know.

Are all the media the same? My guess is that there are some unsupported files in there causing trouble.

You could try MediaInfo on a few samples and report back what the files are.

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

If you look at this folder in the VEGAS explorer does it work? If it crashes there it's definitely an issue with one or more of the files.

In general importing large amounts of media should work.

I am able to use Vegas Explorer to open the folder containing the files. It will even allow me to add the files into "project media" tab.

As for MediaInfo, I did a report on one of the files. All the files in the folder were recorded with the same camera and settings.

The one I picked is a very small file, not sure if this is causing problems for Vegas. In my other video editor it would detect video files that were too short (< 1 sec or 8MB in size) and not import them. These files would occur when I started to record but stopped the camera immediately. They are scattered throughout the folder and I don't want to manaully delete these 8 MB files, wondering if Vegas is trying to import these files instead of dropping them and since it does not produce an error its fighting to figure out how to handle them.

I don't see an issue with the media though it is very short.

What if you just go in Windows Explorer, sort by file size and move these baby videos to a subfolder as they aren't editable anyway?

That is how I was expecting Vegas to behave when handling a large number of video files, but that is not the experience I am seeing on build 300. Will get a video capture of what I am seeing.

I even removed the small files that were less than 1 second in length and that did not fix the problem, seemed to get a little further but end result was a non responsive Vegas.

I got the same result with 147 files in Vegas Pro 21-300.

Damn, I didn't think the solution was that simple

J-V, you were right in having me check my driver for updates. Sure enough after updating the video card drivers the problem seems to have disappeared. No issue loading files onto the timeline, regardless of the number of files.

Thanks to everyone for chipping in.
