Vegas missing end of imported mp4

Thomas-White wrote on 7/19/2024, 10:08 AM

Making screen capture of a 24 hours per day security camera broadcast on YouTube. Software automatically continuously saves as one hour length files. I use Vegas to scrub through at 20x to find and mark activity I need to review. The files have a length of less than the full hour. In most cases, the audio is hour length and the video is two to six minutes shorter. See attached and files here and this image . After three hours with tech support for the software that captures, I find that it is not the capture software. I trusted Vegas to be accurate as always, but testing with various video players shows that the files are complete. I also have Premiere as it is occasionally needed. The file also is complete in Premiere. I have never had such a problem and it only appears to be with this software and only on a short duration file. Anybody have any clues?

@Thomas-White Try turning on Legacy AVC in Preferences - File I/O, I see the same offset as you when this is turned off.

Start by posting your complete MediaInfo details.

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

Security and livestreamed footage all employs a number of severe compression hacks to save bandwidth, none of these sources are optimized for nonlinear editing. Among these goldbergian contrivances are Variable Frame Rate, and GOPs in excess of 300 frames employing B-Pyramid interframe compression, as well as brickwall bandwidth limiting. From your description of shortened files, your footage almost certainly uses one or more of these hacks.

Yes, such files will play normally in a Player, which has absolutely no bearing on their decodability for nonlinear editing. The two functions are as different as night and day.

The most acceptable workaround is to convert your footage to a NLE-friendly format using Shutter Encoder and import that into Vegas; once you have posted your MediaInfo, someone can recommend some fast, lightweight intermediate settings in Shutter Encoder. @Thomas-White

@mark-y Thanks. I have added two txt files in the linked folder, one from Vegas and one from Mediainfo.

@Gid Thanks. Tried it but didn't work.

@Thomas-White  I assume you restarted Vegas after turning on Legacy AVC?

& you're better posting pictures or the text of your MediaInfo on here like you did in your first comment, some people won't want to open a link to find your added text files.

@Gid Thanks. I did restart but didn't work.

@MarJ Thanks. That did the trick.

@Thomas-White

If you set the project frame rate to 23.14 frames per second, the video and audio in Vegas Pro 21-315 will align very closely.

You could nest the clips in a 23.14p project and use the resulting veg in your main project if you need to deliver at a different frame rate.

Full Disclosure

I haven't verified video - audio sync for this file.

Thomas-White wrote on 7/19/2024, 3:24 PM

@john_dennis Thanks. The audio sync isn't critical, but I'll keep that in mind for other projects. It's a radio scanner that won't closely match what is in the video anyway.

@Thomas-White

Your variable frame rate is wild. Your source GOP length of 250 is acceptable to Vegas, and lowering it in Shutter Encoder will not improve the product. I do recommend using FastStart, especially if the video is to be uploaded or streamed again.

Thomas-White wrote on 7/19/2024, 10:57 PM

@mark-y Thanks. In this case the video is ancillary to my real consulting work regarding railroad operation. The video goes from the camera to YouTube to me and it's done. All I need is to be able to FF through each hour of video watching for specific events, slow the video, and note the time. Your previous suggestion fit that perfectly. Thanks. (I do video and photography and also a railroad operations consultant. Sometimes the two worlds meet.)

@Thomas-White Always loved the trains. Took the Zephyr from Denver to the east coast several times growing up. So glad my suggestion worked for you, and welcome to the discussions!
