Vegas Movie Studio 13 (platinum) and 14 crash at startup

nicotine wrote on 5/27/2017, 2:20 AM

Hello!

I´ve used vegas since version 11, upgraded when new updates released and have never had any issues with it. Until a few days ago when my 13 platinum started to crash at startup. It start, load in all media and cuts, but then I get a message that says:

"Movie Studio Platinum has stopped working (but i swedish) Details about the problem can be collected and sent to Magix bla bla."

And then theres a square were you can describe the problem. I´ve done all that more than once, but without any hope of help from Magix...

So I bought the upgrade to VMS 14 for 79 euros with hopes that it would solve the problem. But no, the same problem occurs.

Does anyone have a sollution?

These troubleshooting tips for Vegas Pro also apply to Movie Studio: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-vegas-pro-won-t-start-what-can-i-do--104784/

Despite what the interface implies, sending an error report does not actually send anything. You need to submit a support request first then attach the report to an email. See this.

The thing is that it works great when i´m at work. I can start it and it run perfect for hours and hours. But if I try to start it at home, it crashes instantly. Firewall? And how do I fix it?

I am a new user. Just purchased Vegas Movie Studio 14 Platinum. I had so much trouble with the install, but finally got it done. Now it crashes every time I start it. I haven't had much luck with the tech support, and no-one ever! ever!! ever!!! answers the tech support line. Pretty sorry customer service.

Does anyone have an answer to the "Problem Report" error message that happens during start up?

I have to disconnect my internet while starting up Studio. When it is running I can turn on internet again without any problem. Strange and fucked up...

Thanks for letting me know I am not the only one experiencing this problem ... Movie Studio Platinum 14 was working perfectly late last year (2017) ... Suddenly stopped working, i.e. Will not startup (error occurs during startup procedure, during final phase "Creating Windows) ... Still can't resolve the issue ... Things I have tried so far (not all at once...lol):

1. Uninstalled Movie Studio 14 and NewBlue Complete ... Cleaned computer registry using CCleaner ... deleted all internet cache and temporary file ... re-booted computer ... same error

2. Watched the video from Markk655 in this forum and tried the solution ... https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/movie-studio-platinum-won-t-startup--108881/ ... same error

3. Disabled antivirus software (NOD32) ... same error

4. Disconnected from the internet ... rebooted computer ... same error

5. Uninstalled any new software that had been downloaded since Movie Studio 14 last ran successfully ... Removed Skype update and Magix Music Maker ... Rebooted computer ... same error

6. Tried this (this is the only suggestion from Magix support so far (lots of emails to Support Magix, very little help to date)):

As a troubleshooting step, if you have SeMW Extensions version 1.0.8 or earlier installed, VEGAS Pro 15 may not start. Please update to version 1.0.9 or later.

SeMW Extension update:
http://www.semw-software.com/en/extensions/download

Here is a link to a post on our forum of a user who's same issue was resolved by this step:
https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/crash-on-loading-vegas-15--108310/

7. Have not tried 'every' suggestion in this Vegas Pro forum post yet ... https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-vegas-pro-won-t-start-what-can-i-do--104784/ ... Might try disconnecting all USB devices as suggested ... Last resort might try a Clean Boot

NOTE: There have been no Windows updates during this process (Windows 7, stable platform, i7, 16gb ram) and no changes to the computer hardware. This is consuming loads of my time (and your time) trying to solve a problem that Magix seems unable to solve.

Hope this post helps you and hoping someone can resolve this soon.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Similar situation ... works fine on my computer in the lounge, but not in my office (same IP address).

This was suggested as a possible solution:

"Try disconnecting USB devices, dongles and other peripherals from the system. If that solves your problem, replace them one by one while testing VEGAS until you find the one that causes the problem. Then try updating or rolling back its driver." ...

I have disconnected most of my USB devices and peripherals, Movie Studio 14 still crashes at startup.

Do you have any Native Instruments VST's for example Phasis? If so, upgrade the VST's. If not possible disable the VST's and attempt to load VMS again

Hi Andys ... Thanks for your suggestion ... Tried that, still falls over ... since last visiting this forum I have invested many more hours trying to solve this problem ... It appears that loads of people are experiencing the same issue, it also appears that no one is getting any useful assistance from Magix Support (very sad) ... Feels like I have been "everywhere" on the internet and applied the many suggestions (obviously not "everywhere" or I would have found the solution...lol) ... Running out of time and patience ... Last night I had a new thought re "what might be causing it", over the next few hours I will be working through this new thought process and I will let you know if it works ... Here's hoping!

@publicsp
Just reading this thread and would like to offer something for you to try.
A similar problem was discussed on the Creative Cow Vegas Forum back in 2010.
Read this suggestion posted by naga kihri
"If you created any Favourites in the Explorer window that were located on an External Drive and deleted them, it will cause Vegas to freeze/crash at the Creating Windows stage of startup."

https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/24/894213#908512

If you haven't already done so, I also recommend you delete everything in the Vegas Temporary Files Folder.
First you will have to change a setting in Windows 7, so you can see this folder.
Go to Windows Control Panel/File Explorer Options
Turn ON Show Hidden Files, Folders and Drives

Then go to your Documents window and copy this address into the File Explorer address bar at top.
Please note you will have to replace UserName with Master Folder username that is unique to your computer.
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Movie Studio Platinum\14.0\
Once you have this folder open, delete everything inside of it.

Now try and boot up Vegas Movie Studio.

Something else to note:
On my own computer, I have many different versions of Vegas Pro and Vegas Movie Studio Platinum installed.
When I startup Vegas Pro, the splash screen flies through the sequence and boots without delay.
When I startup any Vegas Movie Studio version, they always get stuck at the Creating Windows part. Normally I have to wait up to 15 seconds and then the program opens. I have the full suite of NewBlueFX and NB Titler installed and I believe it is something to do with these programs that cause the delay.

Final thing:
Once I had a catastrophic failure with Vegas Pro - the program I use every single day.
After wasting many days trying to get it going, I decided on a "Clean Install" of Windows.
It was the only thing that worked. A pain in the arse, but was worth it in the long run.

Regards
Derek

Sadly, my association with Movie Maker/Vegas has come to an end ... Have been a loyal and proud user of Movie Maker since 2011 ... The time has come to say goodbye ... MAGIX are unable to solve my problem ... I am unable to solve my problem ... Have invested/lost so many hours into attempting to fix this situation (which seems to be widespread on the internet (and yet is still not fixed)) that I cannot invest any more time ... My schedule is now overdue for projects that require movie editing, so I am urgently looking for an alternative product ... Note: I have tried 'everything' on the forums, and 'everything' suggested by MAGIX, including many super-clean installations (HKEY's etc) ... Thanks for your advice and assistance ... I wish you well.

The answer was simple:

Press CTRL+SHIFT while double-clicking on the program’s icon to launch it.  Continue to hold the CTRL & SHIFT keys until the program is fully up and loaded.

In newer programs, you will see a window that asks “Do you want to reset all preferences to default values?”  Place a checkmark next to “Delete all cached application data” and then click Yes.

I'm surprised no one else posted this.
