VEGAS not opening several formats

PazGreem wrote on 11/6/2024, 12:35 PM

I recently changed my computer and, now, I'm having trouble opening several video formats on VEGAS, such as some MP4 and RLE files. It's usually only importing the audio of the video.
How can I fix this? I know certainly there is a fix, since I could open these files perfectly well on my old computer.

No, I don't want to use HandBrake or any software to convert these files, since I know that it's perfectly possible to open these files on VEGAS (I used to do it on my old computer).

Yes, I do have K-Lite and QuickTime installed.
Yes, my VEGAS 22.0 is registered and not a pirate version.

Yes, I did try to enable legacy AVC and HEVC decoding and it did not work.
Yes, I do have a good GPU, with updated drivers, and yes, I did try to enable and disable it and it did not work.

Yes, I already restored VEGAS to default settings but still no success.

Who's gonna be smart enough to fix that?

First video may be Dash or another segmented format Vegas can't read, choose the re-wrap option in shutter encoder to make it work, 2nd video is quicktime animation need to install apple quicktime and in preferences in depreciated features enable quicktime plugin.

about 2nd video, I already enabled and disabled the quicktime plugin in preferences, both ways don't seem to work

about the 1st video, I used to be able to open the same file on Vegas an old PC without needing to convert the file

Did you want to upload them to the cloud for others to try? google, dropbox, wetransfer etc.

RLE is an older Quicktime component, you may need to install Apple Quicktime for Windows.

Yes, I do have K-Lite

That's likely part of the problem.

It's better not to, but I already commented all of the specs of the files

I already have QuickTime installed as I said in the original post. And I used to have K-Lite installed in my old PC anyway tho.

By the way, just found out I can't render HEVC also.. It shows this message:

"An error ocurred while creating the media file preview

An unsupported media type was requested"

Re Quicktime (QT) ... the last QT for Windows version was released some 8 years ago - version 7.7.9 - and from Apple's QT website - https://support.apple.com/en-us/106375 - the advice given is that:

QuickTime 7 is for use with Windows Vista or Windows 7. If installed on other versions of Windows, it may not offer full functionality.

RLE is a Quicktime-based animation format according to a Google AI search:

Apple Computer developed QuickTime RLE, also known as the QuickTime Animation format, to allow real-time playback of RGB video without expensive hardware.

QuickTime RLE

When developed: Proprietary release December 2, 1991; public release March 1, 2001

What it does: Video compression format and codec that allows real-time playback of RGB video

Where it's found: Usually found in the QuickTime container with the FourCC "rle"

QuickTime is a multimedia architecture that allows users to play, stream, encode, and transcode digital media. It was created by Apple in 1991 and was a dominant standard for digital multimedia in the 1990s. Apple discontinued the Windows version of QuickTime in 2016

With this in mind, presumably your new computer has Windows 11 installed, but was your old computer also installed with Windows 11?

mark-y wrote on 11/7/2024, 7:15 AM

A bit of background -- RLE was one of the very first attempts at interframe compression -- it gives pretty good compression on static scenes, but with shadow pixelation most noticeable in the blue channel. On motion scenes, the bitrate rapidly becomes equal to uncompressed, making it a very inefficient choice of encoders.

Many shareware applications use the old QT Animation codec because it no longer involves licensing fees. In the 21st century, it's good to keep around for decoding purposes; however, beginning with MPEG-2, its impression of superior quality-after-compression is conveyed mostly by its name legacy, not anything quantifiable by testing.

I'm also not able to render with my CPU on HEVC (I do have a good GPU, a RTX to be more precise, but the GPU render crashes most of the time). This is really messing up my work at the moment. I've been using VEGAS for over 10 years. Couldn't be more disappointed.

RogerS wrote on 11/8/2024, 1:23 AM

The AVC file above should work fine in VEGAS. The RLE one may work with QuickTime installed but is there any other way you can do a capture, etc. to a more editable format? The Quicktime plugin has severe limitations (can only address 32-bits of memory).

What's going on with your HEVC render? Do either of the known-good projects in my signature render? Also try with the GPU (MagixHEVC with NVENC).

If VEGAS used to work you can try a reset: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/

Not really. And as I said, I used to be able to open the same file on VEGAS on another computer with pretty much the same specs and OS. I need to know exactly what is preventing me from opening it in here.

What's going on with your HEVC render?

It shows this message:

Already tried this, no success unfortunately

RogerS wrote on 11/8/2024, 4:11 AM

I think you need to make sample files available (they can be tests of any content- all that matters is the format) so we can try to figure it out on our own machines. We don't have access to your system and so don't know what is going wrong.

If you don't want to do that I'd file a support request and see if they have an idea.

Did the render fail with the test projects I provided? Please use the exact render settings recommended for either to rule out that it's an improper render setting.
