Vegas Pro 12 won't import .MOV files

*** RESOLVED: See my post below on 5/8 at 3:17 pm. ***

I'm using Sony Vegas Pro 12 Build 770 64-bit. I just did a complete wipe of my machine and a fresh install of everything. Now SVP 12 will not directly import .MOV files. Honestly, I'm not sure it ever did. I previously had both 11 and 12 installed and continued to use 11 for older projects. I don't frequently deal with .MOV files.

So... I reinstalled SVP 11 Build 701 64-bit, and it correctly imports the same .MOV files. In SVP 11, I can drag/drop .MOV files or do a file open, and it works just fine. In SVP 12, I get an error message on drag and drop, and when I do a file open, MOV files are not displayed as valid input files. In addition, SVP 11 will render .MOV files but SVP 12 will not. I will note that I didn't originally install Quicktime when I installed SVP 12. I installed it concurrent with re-installing SVP 11. In the SVP 11 render menu, .MOV shows up under a Quicktime category.

Question: If my machine has the codecs for SVP 11 to work, then shouldn't SVP 12 be able to use the same codecs? Thoughts?

Thanks!

Try installing QuickTime after installing Vegas 12
Laura Lynn wrote on 5/6/2015, 10:20 AM
I did. Here's the order of install:

SVP 12
SVP 11
QuickTime

11 works, 12 does not.

This is kinda grasping at straws, but what version of Quicktime do you have installed?
Laura Lynn wrote on 5/6/2015, 10:34 AM
Version 7. I downloaded it yesterday.
dxdy wrote on 5/6/2015, 2:04 PM
Please check the sub-version ... e.g., 7.6.2. You may have gotten a different version in yesterday's download than the one you replaced with your complete reload. Newest versions of QT are not always Vegas-friendly.

Quicktime 7.7.6 (1680.95.31)

I just uninstalled 7.7.6 and installed 7.6 (couldn't find version 7.7.1 or 7.7.4, which were reported to work). I got exactly the same results.
Laura Lynn wrote on 5/6/2015, 5:00 PM
I found a copy of 7.6.4 along with my old Vegas 8 install image. I had made a note along with it that 7.6.5 introduced a problem for Vegas. I uninstalled all downloaded copies and installed 7.6.4. It works for Vegas 11 but not Vegas 12. I'm starting to think there is some other problem.

I just uninstalled and reinstalled Vegas 12. Same results.

Could you upload a few seconds of the .mov file from the camera? Others could work on the issue and possibly help you find a solution.

I don't have Quicktime loaded and open .mov files, but .mov is a wrapper and could have different codecs inside.

I've tried it with three different .MOV files. Two are Digital Juice JB files (which I cannot share, per licensing) and the third is from an iPad. The JB files do not have audio. I did a <ctrl>I in QuickTime on the files. Here's the info:

Digital Juice JB file 1:

Format: Photo - JPEG 1920x1080, Millions
Movie FPS: 30.00
Playing FPS: 30.00
Data Size: 252.55 MB
Data Rate: 105.94 mbits/sec

Digital Juice JB file 2:

Format: Photo - JPEG 1920x1080, Millions
Movie FPS: 30.00
Playing FPS: 30.00
Data Size: 171.10 MB
Data Rate: 71.77 mbits/sec

iPad file:

Format: H.264, 1280x720, Millions AAC, Mono, 44.100 kHz
Movie FPS: 24.02
Playing FPS: 24.02
Data Size: 233.18 MB
Data Rate: 10.63 mbits/sec

For giggles, I did a search on my video drive for .MOV files. I *was* able to load a .MOV file created with a Canon DSLR. Here are the QuickTime specs on it:

Format: Photo - H.264, 1280x720, Millions 16-bit (Little Endian), Stereo (LR), 48.000 kHz
Movie FPS: 59.94
Playing FPS: 59.94
Data Size: 30.89 MB
Data Rate: 27.35 mbits/sec

I just created an iPad .MOV file and verified that SVP 12 cannot process it. You can download it from my dropbox. Any help would be appreciated.

Of course, this doesn't explain the JB files, which claim to be JPEGs. I can import a single JPEG into SVP 12. I can also import the JB files into SVP 11.

On my i7-3770(k) system I could not open your file until I downloaded and installed Quicktime. I took the 7.7.6 (1680.95.31) offering. The full Mediainfo report for your file follows:

Sort of a low pixel dimension and bit rate but quicktime.

I loaded the same version on my System 1 (in my profile) and it also worked.

SWAG:

You have two video adapters, the HD 4000 on-die and the GT 630. Drivers changed lately?
Laura Lynn wrote on 5/7/2015, 5:44 AM
Per my initial post, I did a complete wipe and reinstall of my machine last week. I installed the video drivers from the CD that came with the graphics card(NVIDIA Graphics Driver Version 296.69). The onboard graphics are disabled in the bios. I use the graphics card. I still don't understand how SVP 11 can load these files and SVP 12 cannot on the same machine with the same configuration.

Re: the file resolution. It's an old iPad 2. You can't expect much out of those. ;)
Laura Lynn wrote on 5/7/2015, 5:55 AM
And... I just discovered that while SVP11 will process MOV files and claims to render them, when I try to render, it creates a .mov.sfl file and doesn't actually create the MOV file. That includes rendering a MOV to MOV and an MP4 to MOV. *sigh*

Since moving to Win 7 several years ago I've gotten into the habit of always disabling UAC and installing programs as "Administrator." There are some aspects of your problem that seem possibly related to user account permissions, but others are puzzling.

By any chance, are your .mov files stored on a drive that contains a space in its volume name? i.e. "New Volume"? There are problems with QT rendering to an external volume with a space in its name (as in - it won't), and perhaps there are some unknown read issues as well.
Laura Lynn wrote on 5/7/2015, 1:16 PM
Now we're getting somewhere. Here's what I found:

I had special characters in my drive names. When I removed those and spaces, SVP 11 started correctly rendering the MOV files.

I logged on as Admin and was able to import MOV files into SVP 12, so there must be a permissions problem. What I don't get is that SVP 11 doesn't have the same problem. At least I have a starting place for working this out.

Thanks so much for everyone's help!
dxdy wrote on 5/7/2015, 2:44 PM
I knew that QT would choke (at least in Vegas) on spaces in a file path/name. This is the first I heard special characters would do it, too. I learned something today...
Laura Lynn wrote on 5/7/2015, 3:05 PM
I had a '/' in the name. I'm guessing it thought that was part of the path name... I still have left/right parens and commas and that works.

SUCCESS. It turns out that no amount of installing/uninstalling Vegas Pro 12 and Quicktime (any version), whether as Admin or a normal user, would fix this problem. The problem is that there were settings and values that were being saved in the user account (probably AppData folder) rather than being wiped when the software was uninstalled. The reason it worked on the Admin account was not permissions but rather that account had never used SVP 12, so it had no settings to start with.

The solution is to reset Vegas Pro 12 to the defaults for all settings and values on the affected user account. Here's how:

0. Log on to the affected user account, if not logged on already.

1. Close Vegas Pro 12. You may want to verify via the Task Manager that it isn't hung in the background somewhere in la-la land. If it is just hanging out, kill it.

2. Hold down CONTROL and SHIFT keys at the same time AND ALSO AT THE SAME TIME double click the SVP 12 program icon on your Desktop to start the program.

3. A window will pop up asking if you want to reset all Vegas Pro preferences to default values. Check the "Delete all cached application data." box and click on "Yes".

This will restore program to Factory Default Settings.

Wallah. SVP 12 will now import MOV files. And that's with Quicktime 7.7.6.

Glad you found a solution.

For iPhone/iPad video files and Vegas, you might be best off learning a little FFMPEG. You can re-wrap your video with no loss to .AVI, then Vegas will read your files as normal video with no need for QuickTime installed.

ffmpeg -i <input_file_name>.MOV -vcodec copy -acodec copy <output_file_name>.avi

You could also convert right to ProRes with this command.

ffmpeg -i <input-filename>.mov -vcodec prores -acodec copy -ac 2 <output-Filename>.mov

Add -profile 2 or 3 to the command to get Normal or HQ prores

In the case of ProRes conversion, if you have a version of Vegas that supports Prores the .MOV format will be handled by a special Vegas .DLL and not need quicktime installed.
