Vegas Pro 16 4k edit rig build

William-Ward wrote on 9/23/2018, 12:35 PM

I have had a good look for any info on the minimum CPU / GPU , MB, RAM , SSD, HDD set up for getting the best out of Vegas 16. I can't find anything that is recent! Everything is from 2017 or early 2018. There is a vast array of MB's and chipsets out there with Intel and AMD launching new CPU's. I am not a techie, but I have built (assembled) a couple of computers over the years. I don;t expect anyone to go into great detail , simply pointing me towards a recent solution(s) would be useful. Come to think of it why don't Magix produce build/ component guides for optimising their software. i.e. something in the nature of : minimum requirements; semi-pro/ corporate or community; professional/ broadcast standard. Thanks for any input.

This all very much depends on your budget and editing requirements. Give us information on booth and I am sure we can help.

In the absence of any guidance from Magix, it's still pretty straightforward for the typical Vegas user. Save yourself months of sleepless nights, reading and watching YouTube videos. Start with a simple coin toss to determine whether AMD or Intel. Examine budget to determine whether TRxxxx/Core I9 9xxx or Ryzen 2700/Core 8700 CPU. You should be able to take it from there.

thanks for the swift response, I've decided on the intel 8700 platform; am I correct that only nvidia gpu's work with vegas?

As for my work I used to make corporate videos , educational programmes for museums and latterly some more arty 'landscape poems'. I used to have a sophisticated website to view such. In the near future I'll probably open a youtube or vimeo channel. The next big problem will be the demands of 4k storage....

No, you are not correct. AMD cards are as good if not even better for Vegas due to their better OpenCL implementation. While the 8700k is a good choice for those on a budget, the limited PCIe lanes make it difficult to have headroom for future expansion.

thanks Old Smoke. I have done some more research and now opted to go down the AMD route

AMD - Ryzen 7 2700X 3.7GHz 8-Core Processor £284.98

Motherboard Asus - ROG Crosshair VII Hero (Wi-Fi) ATX AM4 £250.98

Memory Corsair - Vengeance LED 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3000 Memory £242.09

Storage Seagate - IronWolf 10TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive £274.97

Seagate- IronWolf 10TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive £274.97

I already have a Cooler master full ATX case, 850 watt PSU, Corsair 500gb SSD.

I'm away for a week 2-8 Oct. so this will give me time to cogitate and learn more, particularly about M2drives.

Thanyou all for assistance, it is very much appreciated.

I think the processor is a fine choice. If you intend to use spinning/mechanical disks for editing and not just for storage, I advice against it. I also wouldn't purchase a low end GPU if you intend to work in 4K. You are better of finding a used R9 390X or a R9 Fury X on eBay.

I did warn you about doing more research. Although everything OldSmoke says is correct, the 2700X is optimised for gaming, and costs about the same as a TR1900X which arguably is better suited to video. Although it looks like your system largely is in place, you'll probably mentally change CPUs and GPUs several times while you cogitate. I've also been there. Unless you have unlimited funds, eventually you decide good enough is good enough. Good luck.

What about

MSI - GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB GAMING X 4G Video Card and its slightly cheaper at £169.98.

With regard to the Iron wolf HDD's , yes they're meant to hold all of the source footage. I thought they would be fast enough to load clips up to a timeline in Vegas 16; and yes I'll be shooting in 4k and editing /outputting in whatever format is required. Have looked at R9 390x and R9 Fury- there are a lot of them available used but I'm a little wary of buying electronics that run so hot, without a warranty. Gamers are constantly overclocking and over cooking...

William-Ward wrote on 9/24/2018, 5:42 PM

Thanks Rainer, I did look at the threadripper 1900x but it is £400 + cooling kit at £50, whereas the 2700x with built in cooling is £284...I don't have unlimited funds, but I do want to find 'the best bang for the buck' which delivers a system that will allow me to edit 4k video comfortably for 2 - 3 years. I know that at some point I am going to have to invest in Sony ODS-D55U Optical Disc Archive Drive Unit (currently £5000); unless something more reliable and cheaper comes along!

john_dennis wrote on 9/24/2018, 6:06 PM

Pairs of 10 TB hard disks (one spinning, one off-site) are just as reliable and cheaper than optical disk storage.

I worked in data centers for 39 years. I’ve seen many optical disk libraries come and go. When I retired there wasn’t an optical library in the center. Even the tape libraries were virtualized and the data moved to disk arrays. Physical tapes were only written to go for off-site backup.

Hello John thank you for your comment re. data storage... its a bit of a minefield, I'm hoping that cloud storage is going to become cheaper, while broadband capacity for up/down loading increases. Here in the UK its not particularly fast yet (I have 50mbits download but only about 10 mbits upload). Its not something I'm going to take action on for a few months.. I have a lot of HDD's !

@William-Ward Hi. Just wondering if you built your system and how it's working out for you, if you don't mind me asking? I tried for a bargain upgrade and went with Ryzen 1700 + gtx1060. it's pretty good, but still stutters on 4k playback going from clip to clip (it's fine within a clip). Trying to work out if CPU or GPU upgrade will actually make any difference!

Hello Gabgilson, as it turned out i delayed my build and purchased a new camera instead - Panasonic G80 - stills, HD (usable on my current system) and 4k (with limitations, and not usable on my current system). At the moment I'm concentrating on writing and touting for some more corporate work with UK museums/educational programmes etc. I'll do a build later this year when I have the work to justify it - every company and organisation I've dealt with are still quite happy with HD.

On another note I knew Gilson's as farmers in County Durham, UK.

all the best for 2019
