Vegas Pro 17 Optimization

Hello Again Guys.

So sorry for asking it, cause it probably was raised couple of times, but maybe there is some new info.

My question is: How to get most power from my PC when using Vegas?

My PC Specs - Intel Core i9 7960X (16 Cores at 4.4Ghz), GTX 1080Ti, and 64GB of Ram.

First Problem, in Preferences - Video Tab, Vegas shows only 32GB available, that means, if my PC reaches 50% of RAM usage, Vegas Crashes, Cause it thinks that I have 32GB of RAM and that it's Full.

Second Thing, no matter what codec I Render in, my CPU or GPU only being used no more than 20-30%... I hope there is a way to fix it...

Basically are there any switches and "LifeHacks" to get more performance out. Will really Appreciate.

Vegas Pro 20 Build 411, Windows 11 PRO, Intel Core i9 10980XE (4.9Ghz all cores) with Direct Die and Luquid Metal + EK Waterblock, RTX 4090 EK Water Cooled, 128GB DDR4 G.Skill 3800Mhz, Samsung 980 Pro 2TBx4, Asus Rog Rampage VI Extreme Omega, Creative SoundBlaster X5, Elgato 4K 60 Pro x2, Seasonic Prime TX 1600W Titanium. Custom EK Water Cooling, with Direct Die and Liquid Metal, 420mm EK Radiator 45mm thick, 2x 360 EK Radiators, 45mm thick, D5 Revo Pump. 12X Noctua Coolers, four of those are 140mm, others 120mm.

Some tips here, many of which will affect render speed as well as playback smoothness: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-make-my-video-preview-play-smoothly-in-vegas-pro--104624/ I still need to add something about the hardware decoding in VP17.

#1, Nick's list is very good. Very comprehensive. BUT you might not want to deal with Proxies and so forth so....:

#2, Good news! Nothing wrong with your machine/software.

Vegas RAM Preview only allows 32 Gigs MAX, that is not what Vegas itself will see/use, just that RAM Preview feature, which allows a pre rendering of a segment YOU select by left clicking and dragging on the time ruler area over any segment, let's say between 2 and 20 seconds, that you'd want to see play back smoothly. It will then highlight in blue, then hit "SHIFT B" and it will start the pre render. Cursor returns to starting point, hit play ..... the difference from regular render is it is temporary, stored in RAM and not as a file on your hard drive. You can view it several times, but once you leave that area, the preview evaporates.

RAM Preview is my favorite way of dealing with the inevitable slow playback, (well, when you've got effects and compositing). The tip Nick gave to turn off effects universally with that one button (Video Output fx, , "f" icon, Next to "split screen" button on Preview Window) is also a quick way to see the flow if added fx are slowing you down, and they sometimes will.

One of the Vegas "gurus" on Youtube says that 1/3 of total RAM, so for you, 20000 (MBs) in the allocation window, would be the "sweet spot" for RAM Preview allocation. I've got 64 Gigs also, so 20000 is working pretty well for me.

Vegas is an older program that hasn't yet really got a way (yet, thought they are progressing) to fully maximize your available GPU resources in a sustained fashion, my usage is about like yours. It will peak in the 80-90% range sometimes but moves along in the 20-30 %... The good news is you've got the right hardware. See below:

THE BEST instructional series, by far, for relative newbies (or even experienced users) for Vegas is Andrew Devis free series. Almost fifty short videos, power packed, well explained, cut to the chase, no useless jabber or ads. Well produced. Here:
