Vegas Pro 20 (Build 411) - Issue With Track Motion

MH7 wrote on 4/11/2024, 8:14 AM

Hi guys,

So, as per the title, I’m having a problem with Vegas Pro 20 (Build 411 - I don’t believe my issue is related to the build number of VP). The situation is that I used to be able, with previous versions of Vegas Pro, use Track Motion to create the motion graphics for my YouTube channel and use shadows behind generated media to give a sort of depth, like the material design look that was introduced many years ago.

The problem is now, when I try to do what I used to do (in regard to the shadows), it creates this weird problem when I click the checkbox in Track Motion and enable shadows. It’s hard for me to clearly explain it here in words (as of writing I’m currently on an iPad right now so I cannot access my PC to visually show you this), but if someone has Vegas Pro 20, although it may do the same thing on Vegas Pro 21 (of which I don’t have), would you mind doing the following, please:

  • Open up a new project in Vegas Pro 20 (possibly even Vegas Pro 21).
  • Go to the ‘Generated Media’ tab and select a solid colour (any colour is fine) and place it on the timeline.
  • Add a second solid colour (needs to be a different colour from the colour you previously selected) from the ‘Generated Media’ tab and add it to the timeline underneath the previous ‘Generated Media’ colour.
  • Now go to left of the video track of your top colour, on the timeline, and select ‘Track Motion’.
  • Once opened, resize the colour down to less than half of it’s original size so that you can see the other colour that is below on the timeline.
  • Now, where you see the keyframe area, which looks like a timeline in and of itself (where you see the little diamond shaped dots), you’ll see two (2) extra options to the left of this area, underneath ‘Position’; these options will be ‘Shadow’ and ‘Glow’, select the checkbox for shadows.

Now, if I’ve explained this well enough, and you understand what I’m asking you to do, the result should be that of which is my current problem with Track Motion. Anyone who is kind enough to do this (thank you), would you mind taking a screen capture of your results and posting them in this thread of mine below, please. Once done, hopefully my problem can be shown.

@MH7 This is what I get with VP21

This is what I get with VP20

Notice the inverted chevrons on the track header. Are you seeing these? This signifies track motion has been applied.

@Jack S | Thanks, mate, for doing this. I can’t quite remember about the inverted chevrons. But your VP 20 doesn’t seem to be doing what mine is doing. I can try to explain. When I do what you have done and enable shadows I get a black rectangle that spans the whole entire left side of the colour. It seems to be connected to the shadow because when I disable it the black rectangle goes away. If I make the shadow more transparent this black rectangle also goes transparent. This is in addition to the shadow underneath the colour.

I forgot to mention, the chevrons only appear when you change any of the track motion parameters. Clicking on these chevrons opens up a keyframe display on the timeline.

I can only think of two things. Check that your graphics driver is up to date. If it is, try a full reset, including deleting the cache. Note that if you do this you'll need to restore all your settings, so back them up first and make sure you make a note of those you can't back up.
To do a full reset, hold down Ctrl and Shift while you double-click the VP20 shortcut on your desktop. It won't work with the one on your taskbar (if you have one). In the dialog that appears, place a check mark in the option 'Delete all cached application data' and click OK. Vegas will take a little longer to launch because it has to generate the cache data again. I hope this cures the problem for you.

Ah okay. I think I’ve seen that before. Thank you!

Whilst not on the absolute latest graphics driver, I do have the previous release before the latest one. Nevertheless, I will try your suggestion and see how I go. Thanks!

Thanks, mate, for your help. I will try that.

However, I too forgot to mention something. The installation of Vegas Post 20 (including VEGAS Pro, VEGAS Image, VEGAS FX, and some other programs) is a fairly fresh installation. Out of curiosity, I tried installing my previous version of Vegas Pro, Vegas Pro 18 (downloading the latest build version from MAGIX directly) and, low and behold, it too does the exact same thing with Track Motion and has the exact same problem. Of course, I will try updating my AMD graphics drivers to the latest and see what happens. I will also post a screen shot of my problem so that it can be visually seen along with any settings in Track Motion when I can get back on my computer.

Thanks, once again, for your kind help. It’s greatly appreciated!

Here's a couple of screen shots of my problem:

Track Motion - No Shadow Enable

Track Motion - Shadow Enabled

Also, my AMD Graphics are up to date with v24.3.1.

If this problem can't be solved, I may have to find a way to create the shadow manually, which I could probably do but it's not preferrable. Any further help by anyone is greatly appreciated. I have yet to reset VEGAS Pro. I will try that also.

UPDATE: I reset VGEAS Pro 20 as suggested, holding down CTRL and shift, and the exact same thing is happening above. I don't know what to make of this.

@MH7 It's coincidental that @Dexcon and I can't repro the problem. We're both on NVIDIA graphics and you're on AMD. I'm curious as to whether @Reyfox is on AMD also. His signature isn't clear on that. This is the same test for me with VP18

I know that there have been graphics issues with some AMD driver versions. The only thing I can suggest is a staged rollback on versions, but I appreciate that's a pain. Maybe before you do that, do a search on the forum for AMD driver issues.

@Jack S, the RX 6700XT is an AMD graphics card. Where the problem arises, is when you uncheck 2D Shadow.

Jack S wrote on 4/12/2024, 4:57 AM

@Reyfox I'm a little confused. Are you saying that you are seeing different symptoms to @MH7? You say that the problem arises when you uncheck the 2D shadow. His screenshots indicate that the problem occurs when the 2D Shadow is checked.

Based on the mixed experiences posted here, where those of us on AMD seem to have the issue and those on Intel/NVIDIA not having the issue, my guess is that it’s an AMD problem. I wonder if we were to compare the program configuration files for Track Motion on AMD systems vs Intel/NVIDIA systems in Vegas Pro program files if there would be a difference, even if only a little difference.

@Reyfox ...

I turned off GPU acceleration in Preferences>File I/O, and Video

Wouldn't that have the undesirable side-effect of drastically slowing down timeline performance paricularly with VFX that are enhanced by GPU acceleration?

For the time being, I think what I would do is to turn off GPU and render the video requiring the track motion / shadow to an intermediate for inclusion in the main project (with GPU enabled). This of course is only an option if there's only a few video events involved. If it's the majority of a long project, this approach will unlikely be a practical solution.

Hmm…that’s interesting. I wouldn’t’ve thought Track Motion used GPU acceleration. I will definitely try that tomorrow. So, basically, you turned of GPU acceleration for the timeline and video FX, but would you still be able to render out a project with GPU acceleration?

@MH7 and @Dexcon, I turned off the GPU to see if that was the issue since others with Nvidia cards aren't experiencing this.

I left AMD on in File I/O, both RAW Processor and Hardware Decoder, but in Video>GPU Acceleration, I had as OFF, the track motion worked as it should. Rendering that short clip with AMD VCE 4K 25P on a 10 second clip, it rendered 7fps less than with the "wonky", everything AMD on, versus AMD off in Preferences>Video. 88fps vs 81fps.

@MH7 and @Dexcon, I turned off the GPU to see if that was the issue since others with Nvidia cards aren't experiencing this.

So, if I understand correctly, you went to File I/O tab and disabled GPU acceleration and now that weird problem with the shadow option enabled or checked in Track Motion is no longer showing that strange shadow issue, correct?

@Reyfox | Okay, thank you!

I do wonder why AMD GPUs have the problem and not NVIDIA GPUs. But, at least it can be overcome with what you experimented with and found out. Because I do use Track Motion a lot. My YouTube intros depend on it. Although, in saying that, since having the problem, I have been experimenting with ‘Pan/Crop’ and gotten some interesting results that I like. But I still need a completely functional Track Motion, with shadows, for other elements, so thank you.
